^ This might be one of the few cases where the audience is closer to the mark than the critics.
Putting aside the fact that it's Star Wars, I didn't think it was a great or even particularly good film in terms of the basics of plot, dramatic tension and suspension of disbelief.
If what they needed to do in order to advance the plot was decimate the resistance and have Kylo take over, surely someone could have come up with a better storyline than this whole thing about finding a locksmith to break into the ship so you can turn off tracking of your ship (lol).
Also some very weird choices in terms of casting. What was the thinking behind putting Laura Dern in there with purple hair, was it some kind of nod to modern feminism? Snoke as a CGI villain was very poorly done, felt cartoonish like something out of the prequels. Kylo Ren is sort of interesting as a conflicted villain, but I have a hard time understanding where they are going with his character. None of the bad guys...Snoke, Kylo, the ginger haired guy...were remotely scary.
It did pick up a bit at the end, but overall very underwhelming considering the potential.

^ I feel like many professional critics can't actually be that critical of things that are super popular. If they go in too hard on something so well loved as star wars, they will lose readers and there goes their careers.
You see this a LOT in videogames. The call of duty games have been utter trash for many years, but the franchise is so insanely popular that review sites are afraid to trash any cod games so they give all of them good scores regardless of the quality of the game. If they give it a bad score, people will just stop going to the site, ad revenue drops...
I'd rather just read user scores, people that have no stake in any of this. If something sucks, they'll just say it. When I see ep8 has a 91% approval from critics, but go anywhere online and you can clearly see that so many people hate this movie, I dont think that 91% is accurate at all. It's not representative of what people are actually saying. That 51% is definitely much closer to reality.
- Thats not to say people cant like this movie, or its a fact that its bad. Its all just opinions of course, but I just dont trust professional reviewers anymore.CygnusZero4

I went in thinking I'd side with the critics over the fans, given how fickle people can be, but I gotta agree with what people are saying.
They need to move away from the stupid, horribly unrealistic things like the locksmith crap, or even the rebellious pilot. Real tech makes it all just bad writing.
They need to focus on the mythical parts of the force. They had an opportunity on the island but reduced it to some dumb mirror hall thing (c'mon, she see's herself as the danger? Hmm). They should/could develop the complexity between Kylo and her but they went Hollywood dumb (imho).
I fear it'll be run by $$ and they will be even more generic than the last Star Trek. At this point, I have little interest in the next one, it's an old plot and I feel like I've seen it 10 times already.
- Totally agree...lots of interesting material in terms of the force, mythology, etc. Instead they focus on tedious plotlines that have been done a hundred timesyuekit

Loved it.
Yes, plenty flaws and missed opportunities, but it's easy to ignore and just get sucked in. You have to want that, though, as opposed to sitting there scanning for holes
Helps that I was massively baked, I guess
- I saw it in 4DX first which ruined it, but in 2D tonight it was FANTASTICGardener

- I liked the chamber aesthetic... yet at the same time it looked like the set from a play.ETM

Thought it was okay. Not as good as Rouge or Awakens though.
- Rogue was goodApeRobot
- Awakens was more "fun." Despite flaws in TFA and TLJ, I didn't have much fun in TLJ. I have to watch it again.ETM

Finally saw it yesterday like an obedient consumer. It felt like every box on the list was being ticked, right down to the diversity-quota cast of rebels for the next instalment. Just another remix.

Rose was this movie's Jar Jar Binks. I liked the movie overall, but remove her (and all corresponding storylines, dialogue, etc) and this entire thing gets WAY better.
- She a should've allowed Finn an heroic deathrobthelad
- Based on the downvotes, I guess some folks liked her complete and utter irrelevance to the plot, how she could have doomed the resistance by stopping Finn, etc.MondoMorphic
- Perhaps it's because compared to Rose, JJB was an annoying twat. Regardless of how relevant either was to the plot.MrT
