    It was ok. I think.

Problem for me was I didn't eat all day then sped-drank two ciders and had a joint before I got in, then drank two more ciders whilst in there, went for three very long and bladder-destroying toilet sessions and raised my partner's significant capacity for ire.

One of the main characters had terrible CGI and there was quite a lot of unnecessary shop-horning of second-tier characters in, but what the hey, it's star wars and much more in line with the original trilogy, so all good here.

Agree with the points made above about who should've died and who shouldn't, but I'm not going to lie - I whooped internally when Leia did that ridiculous thing and during the bombing run and ... yeah, it was fun.

    .

What I REALLY liked was the return to ridiculo-tech - the idea of WW2-era physics at play on inter-stellar capacity space ships and stuff... I mean - a bombing run? Ships being out of reach of .. why? It's space ffs, not much out there to stop projectiles! :)

    • Oh, and whilst there was one too many attempts at humour, perhaps, I loved that interaction between Finn and Hux :)detritus
    • *shoe-horning, obviously... although with the obvious underpinning commercial reasons for their inclusion, perhaps shop-horning's not far off...detritus
    • lol @ridiculo-tech... I agree with you on thisOBBTKN
    • AT-ATs are the best example of this... all that antigrav and they build clumsy slow walkers. Didn't care when little though ha.fadein11
    • I agree with you on these. To be fair one of those characters having terrible CG was due to ... well timing!mugwart
    • I'm guessing it was all CG those parts or he/r make up artist needs more training!mugwart
    • and I liked Finn in this film.mugwart
    • ach't, I meant 'Poe and Hux' not Finn!detritus
    • the Poe & Hux comedy routine was ill timed, what was needed was tension for that opening sceneBluejam
    • ahr forgot about that bit. I liked that bit as well.mugwart
    • LOL at detritus trying to hit Star Wars like he's 18 again with the cider and doobie.microkorg
    • I've always drank and smoked for the cinema — the older I get the harder I find it to sit still for 2-odd hours staring at a screen.detritus

No pressure Mr. Howard but you might be in charge of rescuing the Star Wars Franchise. See you in 5 months!

    • one of the nicest directors (he and Edwards in my humble opinion). Just for his handling of people he has my full support!mugwart

Sitting through Rogue One I asked myself "how many times can I watch the same situations, screens, lines and settings ?", even though its ending redeemed it and justified it.

Watched the Last Jedi last night and I think I'm done with the Star Wars universe.
I'll give Ron Howard's Solo a chance but I don't care for more Force talk and family business, Rebels vs Empire is starting to feel like a broken record, throughout the film I had to remind myself several times that this takes place after the original ones, that it's actually supposed to be a continuity, even had to remind myself that Luke and Leia are brothers and sisters....! Coming from a huge Star Wars fan as a kid (I was 5 when Empire came out and have vivid memories of my emotions regarding all things Return of the Jedi, from the new ships to the mood).

I don't have kids and I see how I'd certainly enjoy this more if I did and could see in them what was once my excitement. But I don't need more than 3 films to explore a universe through the same endless story, despite all the good that can be found here and there. I'd rather play Battlefront 2.

Highlight of the film for me : the X-Wing drifting for a U-turn in the opening sequence.

    • so you weren't even entertained?monospaced
    • There is plenty of good in Last Jedi, but it rarely come from the story.spl33nidoru
    • I'd say I was more stimulated than entertained. Unlike Force Awakens, I just couldn't get into it, just tired of the whole universe I think.spl33nidoru
    • I have 3 close friends of similar age to me who grew up with SW like me. All of them confirmed what you have said here. I haven't seen yet which is the longestfadein11
    • I have ever waited to watch a Star Wars film. The Force Awakens was a terrible film. And I had a feeling this may be worse. The "but they are kids films"fadein11
    • doesn't excuse bad script / lazy storytelling. Look how Pixar nailed the parent/kid together cinema experience. SW was the 1st franchise that did that with thefadein11
    • originals. Even my mum loved taking me to see the new SW way back because they had great scripts and characters you cared about.fadein11
    • I hope I like it but I have a feeling it is going to be a bad experience. Lame ass writing can never be fixed in post production.fadein11
    • Very true, fade. Our parents could enjoy it because they were discovering the story just like us. Here, I don't feel like I'm discovering shit.spl33nidoru
    • I will be watching with my kids after Christmas Day. I think they prefer the originals to the newer ones also tbh.
A lot of people say "but the originals had
      fadein11
    • corny scripts" but there is a big difference here, you didn't cringe at some bad writer trying to recreate those corny scripts for nostalgic reasons.fadein11
    • It's about originality (which is v.lacking these days and a lot of people don't seem bothered by it). The opening trilogy had originality in bucketloads.fadein11
    • We have lost the art of story telling, excitement & actually having heros. When was the last "hero" we actually had? Neo?mugwart
    • SW based so much on Jung, Disney bases is on manipulating the mind and audience for $.mugwart
    • yepfadein11
    • Ironically Lucas is pretty much to blame for the state of things now though.fadein11
    • Yall have some weird idea that the original films were great. They were corny as fuck, had cheesy dialogue, muppets, shitty sword fights and all kinds of shit.monospaced
    • I love the films. Maybe try to lower the bar to the originals and you'll actually enjoy a fun film for once. Fucking hell man.monospaced
    • I haven't seen yet. And I loved Rogue One. Superb. Force Awakens was a 5/10 movie. Even my daughter finds it dull compared to others. Its not just about whineyfadein11
    • old men, its about originality. The originals were partly inspired by Sat morn serials like Flash Gordon. Along with a load of other influences that created anfadein11
    • original mythology and visual style of film. The new ones are just inspired by the old ones, nothing original as far as I can tell. Even the Prequels triedfadein11

I found it to be quite boring.

Most of the movie was spent watching people do things and make choices that had no consequences.

    Spoilers:

For instance, when emo vader turned on smoke, then after he killed him was back to being the bad guy.

Or when Finn decided to make a selfless act, but then that girl saved" him, but then none of that mattered because ghost luke.

Nothing mattered, and all the characters ended up in the same place at the end as they were in the beginning.

The only person that had the slightest arc was Poe who learned to not follow his heart, but to listen to the masses.

    • lol, seeing sat and pretty much all reports say the same. and even worse after the initial excitement wore off.fadein11

    anyone have a cam link?

    anyone want one? :D

lol... you clowns paid for this shit.

:/ kidding... you're not clowns... I get it... but WOW what overhyped nonsense this series has become.

The original 3 still start and stop the story for me... everything else is just noise and $$.

...and Fuck George Lucas for letting this happen :(

    • Lucas is a good man. I have no issues with him.since1979
    • I just wish someone had the balls to tell him he writes the worst dialogue.monospaced
    • THX1138 is a super great movieBennn
    • He hides the Boba Fett toy prototypes in his neck pouch.bezoar
    • Lucas only wrote A New Hope in the 1st trilogy. Empire had great dialogue.fadein11
    • he must be cracking up with how bad this has goneCygnusZero4
    • I know that fadein11, nobody said otherwise. Now, who wrote episodes 1-3?monospaced
    • you said Lucas wrote bad dialogue? no? he wrote 1 film in the original trilogy.fadein11
    • prequels dialogue is actually way better than 7 + 8 though. Force Awakens is an embarrassing mess of bullshit dialogue and fake nostalgiafadein11
    • I disagree. I felt the dialog in the prequels was awful. I also have the opinion he's not really a good writer at all, especially with dialogue.monospaced
    • lol, as if he's known as a screenwriter... he created concept cinema. he's writes stories, worlds etc. he's never been known as a great screenwriter.fadein11
    • Raiders of the Lost Ark? you do know he pretty much created that concept?fadein11
    • and everyone has had the balls to tell him he writes bad dialogue, that's why he rarely does write it.fadein11
    • love you though mono :)
but come on, force awakens is a crock of shit compared to a good SW movie like Rogue One.
      fadein11
    • all the best with your new arrival if he arrives before we speak again. Best Xmas present ever :) Have a great festive season.fadein11
    • lol, you're hilarious ... I didn't say Force was better, or anything else you're saying. I only think he's not that good of a fucking writer.monospaced
    • sure he's got great ideas, and I love many of his films, but it's my opinion his dialogue is shit (corny, sure, funny, sometimes). don't act like I can't say itmonospaced
    • it's your opinion he's good ... fine, but you need to back offmonospaced
    • lol. you said "I just wish someone had the balls to tell him he writes the worst dialogue."fadein11
    • he is universally regarded as a bad dialogue writer and director of actors. everyone has said this, for the last 30 years. I must have missed the point.fadein11
    • jesus I am not personally attacking you mono. it's just a silly statement.fadein11
    • the best SW films had nothing to do with Lucas as screenwriter.fadein11
    • dude, if he's regarded as bad, then there's really nothing wrong with what i said, is there? you literally have no reason to arguemonospaced
    • I felt like nobody told him that during the process, and to me that's painfully obvious. There's nothing silly about what I wrote. It was just a thought. CHILLmonospaced
    • you're getting all worked up over nothingmonospaced
    • I'm really not lol, you said you wished someone had told him, but he clearly knows that as he rarely ever wrote a screenplay.fadein11
    • Lucas is my hero, leave him alone hahafadein11
    • sorry if I came across angry, just a little bit protective :)fadein11
    • Lucas isnt the worst when it comes to dialogue but he's no Woody Allensince1979
    • look, it was a goddamn joke okay? I didn't assume he had been told ... considering he made a career of shit dialogue ;) MY BADmonospaced
    • btw, I'm a fan of his work ... not all of it, but the good stuff for suremonospaced
    • okay :)fadein11

We all understand the studio logic, and nobody in charge is going to take a gamble against $2b in revenue per film, except for Lucas himself maybe.

Looking back, he did at least try to incorporate a lot of novelty in his 2nd trilogy despite some mind-boggling choices.

Not that I care that much, I'm happy sticking with the original ones, but my dream for the new films would have been :

    - make Force Awaken an epic 3h30 film à la Lawrence of Arabia, standalone movie with the old cast and go nuts on Skywalker legacy and the Force and Rebellion vs Empire, stuff all that there and wrap that story up, nobody's gonna complain.

    - Rogue One makes sense, well done.

    - you want trilogies ? make a super dark one and another super light one (Solo ?) in this universe, where rebellion, empire, jedis etc are just a backdrop to new stories, it's just the setting, not what drives the story.

    - Different studios I know (not anymore tho) but Wall-E is a film that could absolutely have been made as a live action film within the Star Wars universe. It screams of SW droids!! Why not look at this huge universe as a setting for "smaller" stories that don't involve the whole galaxy ?

    - 12-15 years down the road, another epic 3h30 film, whoever's still around of the original cast à la Nimoy in JJ Abrams' Star Trek, bring back Jedis & Empire if needed, just rarely enough that we have time to miss their shenanigans

    • Ive made peace with the prequels myself. Alot of it's issues stem with the fact that Lucas is not great with dialogue and that he took a 20 year break from filmsince1979
    • Yes, technology also, they really went for something new. As a result, the difference in directing style is huge between ep1 and ep2, much more dynamic.spl33nidoru
    • Wall-E is the best.monospaced

This movie has really stayed on my mind for the last couple of days. That makes it a great film in my eyes.

I think it's a lot deeper than a childish sci-fi opera. It plays with the middle grey-area of light and dark much more than any Star Wars movie to date. Yoda and Kylo share the same F it attitude towards structure, yet are on totally different sides. Luke struggled with darkness himself , he almost killed Han's kid on an impulse! Being a hermit is not easy on the psyche.

Poe's impulsiveness made him think he was a hero, but he got so many killed...and for what? Is he Trumpy?

This is going down as one of the great Star Wars films of all time from an intellectual standpoint.

Mark Hamill hates the movie. I kinda knew this already months ago when he kept talking about how he didnt like the direction Rian took it, but he didnt come out and fully say he didnt like the movie then. Now that it's out and Rian is out of the picture, he is singing like a canary. lmao
