    InDesign...

    Export PDF.

Then it bloody starts to open Illustrator to open the PDF, which comes up in the little tiny antique preview select page dialogue, which you have to type page numbers into. FFS...

I just wanted to export the PDF. Not be reminded of how antique Illustrator 2020 still is.

    • Uncheck “open after export” or whatever. And don’t make illustrator your default for PDFs. This never happens to me. Ever.monospaced
    • Use a default setting for starters.monospaced
    • I export PDFs from indesign several times a day sometimes. Never once has one opened auto in illustrator or any program unless specifically told to.monospaced
    • ^ Nobody in their right might would have Illustrator as their default choice for opening PDFs hahaIanbolton
    • My default pdf viewer is After Effects.nb

Feels good to uninstall flash for the first and last time lol. no more updates.

    • I remember the Flash era well. Around 2006 most serious website design development and video distribution went through them. Then the iPhone came outdkoblesky
    • Yes, and everyone said the iPhone was a joke, and that it would fail because Flash didn't work on it like it did EVERY OTHER PHONE.monospaced
    • But, people bought iPhones and didn't give a fuck about Flash. And Flash sucked. And Adobe did NOTHING, and then Adobe killed it single-handedly.monospaced
    • But long before that, Google actually put the nail in the coffin and killed Flash entirely on Android. But if you want to blame Apple, go ahead.monospaced

one thing i did use a bit was adobe bridge. i just had become used to my resources/scans/favorites all set up over the years and now suddenly there's no program to just immediately be able to jump to all my various media resources.

affinity doesn't seem to have a replacement and just browsing in finder is kind of a pain in the ass, it's weird that in the end bridge has been the most difficult part of leaving adobe behind

    • I use a really really old soft for that...graphic converter...it's fast and allows me to batch convert stuff, but I use it mainly to browse through files.uan
    • and you can use it for free if you want, or support the dev with 40$.

    • I use the "free" Bridge on computers without Adobe set up; But I've been looking at ImageRanger. Also Retrobatch is a great node-base image processor.evilpeacock

Am I missing something? All CC apps are 2021 titled but After Effects is still 2020?

One interesting thing I've found in moving from Adobe to Affinity is the distinct lack of convenience. It's sort of how I feel when I go travel in Europe... it's not that things are difficult, but in America they're just designed to be easier - however, the trade-off is having increasingly bloated and useless systems.

As books are my primary medium, there's just so much I've gotten used to be able to shortcutting in InDesign (that otherwise should just be traits of Photoshop or Illustrator)... now in the Affinity suite, it's just I have to do the work the program is designed to do in that particular program.

Which, I mean, is how it should be. But it is strange how unlearning that added convenience layer can be such a difficult task.

    • Examples of US vs EU convenience systems?Nairn

    • This is why I have had a hard time adapting to GIMP. All the tools are there, same as PS, but it is those YEARS of experience with PS UI...i just KNOW itdkoblesky
    • Well so if there's no more Photoshop next year, you go out of business? Adapt, most design apps are 90% the same, commongrafician

Photoshop's neural filters are ok, e.g. when you have a portrait of a male and want to tidy it up. You make the facial age a bit younger and photoshop does a good job on the beard.

But why the fuck is it only doing it in the face when the beard goes all the way down to the neck?

    • It’s learning.monospaced
    • The blue frame around the face is always too small. And if it can retouch skin, do the whole body, not just the face.

      It works well on males.

    So this sucks...

January 2023: Adobe applications will not recognize the presence of Type 1 fonts, even if you have Type 1 fonts installed in your desktop operating system.

lol, if you type 'Fuck Adobe' into DDG this thread's very near the top :)

Anyway. I realised today that Adobe sent me an email in November telling me they'd renew my subscription and then, in small print down below where I didn't see, mention it'd increase by 40%.

Cue a chat engagement with the support and I went in a bit hard (because I was pissed off) and overplayed my hand, insisting they simply downgrade to just Illy and nix any cancellation fees, but thankfully they relented and continued me on the same thing I had before.

I had a moment of panic, thinking I'd have to really get into Affinity Photo, which I just can't be bothered doing right now.

    Phew!

I'd be annoyed that they'd overcharged me £80 since December, but then they gave me three months free too, so I'm like £5 up or something.

What a faff, just to keep a suite of apps and services I don't even use (just Illy and PS here)

    • that's the thing.....they penalize you severely for just wanting one product. I pay $24 a month just for AEdkoblesky
    • Yeah, my problem was that I had Illy and PS subscriptions, which does get stupid. I pay a little more and have the full suite, but I don't use any of it.Nairn
    • I installed Animate when I flattened this machine last week, but I cna't see having time to play with it for .. well, ever. It's useless to me.Nairn
    • They could make a lot of money on these products if they were smart. They clearly want to own your entire online toolsetdkoblesky
  • dkoblesky1

I am sure they could make enough money if they priced them reasonably. But they clearly want to own your entire online toolset and so they just make their user base mad and drive them to other options.

If they priced them reasonably I would have PS, AI and AE....but I just have AE and have learned GIMP and Inkscape, as well as Audacity....because fuck off I don't want all your garbage. I dont want XD and Aero and whatever the fuck what do you think I do...just learn new tools all day so you can sell me new ones?

I am sure that their numbers show a pie that is 90% PS, AI, AE and then alllll the rest...

The way they sell is offensive because they present you with this option: WE WANT TO OWN ALL YOUR ONLINE TOOLS.....oh, alright you can have just one at HALF the price of the whole set....arent you stupid

    fuck off Adobe.

Other than AE, I am doing fine. And you know what, if it came down to it, I would figure out what to do without AE if I had to.

    • Just use free trails and Little Snitch to block the softwares communicating with Adobe server?shapesalad
