    Huh.

So I'm converting a scan of a hand-drawn sketch into a vector and therefore something usable to me.

Usual steps - load in Photoshop, desaturate, edit out any unwanted level excesses, check perimeter of drawing for gaps, wand select interior and the expand by half the width of the drawn stroke (in this case, 3px).

I missed a detail on the first attempt, so ctrl-z'd a couple of times and wand-selected and... huh. It's not selecting just the interior - it's leaking, and I'm getting an 'outer inverse' selection too. Funny. That... shouldnt've happened.

Cue 2 minutes of swearing, trying to work out how I've 'poisoned' my History with an incorrect application and then I zoom out so i can get a better view and try again and - voila! - it works. Huh.

I undo, zoom back in and try the same and it fucks up again.

Somehow, the wand selection tool is zoom-sensitive.

    Great stuff. Thanks Adobe.

    • So fucking arbitrary.Nairn
    • at 16.7% zoom, it does what I want.
At 33% zoom... it does not.

      flol. jeez.
      Nairn
    • Sorry, also works at 25% zoom.Nairn
    • It's annoying to me that I pay Adobe £x a month to basically do this shit, which I could in Way-<CS2, were it not for lock-out file version upgradesNairn

oh ffs, Adobe are trying to push up the CC subscription cost again.

    Second time this year!

    • upvoting cause you're complaining.oey_oey
    • it just means another pointless twenty minutes spent with some Indian chap on chat, haggling back to the previous price again.Nairn
    • just get affinity and be shot of themhans_glib
    • if they play hardball, i'm keeping my illy sub and going for affinity for bitmaps. I really don't use the rest of the suite at all. To my shame, admittedly.Nairn
  • Nairn0

WHY does the kerning change on tracts of text, depending upon how much I'm zoomed in? Fuck's sake, it's been like that for years.

    • I mean, it's not actually changing - it's just the visual appearance in the shitty font rendering makes it look like it is. I keep checking non-fuck-ups.Nairn
    • I find this really annoying as wellGnash
  • oey_oey0

So no Black Friday deal this year?

    • just contact them and cry until they give you a rebate. For real, it works. Same for your phone, internet, insurances..Bennn
  • colin_s4

i switched over to affinity (based on recommendations here) and honestly couldn't be happier. i don't necessarily put as much work through them as i used to these days but so far have only noticed a few annoyances that come from more a developed methodology and not program inadequacy.

    • do they have an After Effects like program though?dkoblesky
    • Coming from CS3 to Affinity, it's been better than what I was used. Plus, only $50 a pop.section_014
    • The only AE contender (so far) is Cavalry, which is pretty new.evilpeacock
    • its a very different animal than AE, but Blender has pretty good compositing and 2d animation tools. Maybe worth a look.monNom
    • Blender's compositing tool is ok, but its not After Effects. Cavalary...that was in beta recently? need to lookdkoblesky
    • AE is truly unique. I would love to see the numbers for AE only subscription. I am one of thosedkoblesky
    • AE is the main reason I'm still paying them. I use a few CC apps but with workflows in TV etc there's pretty much no choice. I like AE too if I'm honest.MrT
  • dkoblesky1

Has anyone tried Cavalry? It *looks* like AE.

Thing is, the monthly license is about the same as After Effects.

    LOL.

    • just looking at that interface or AE's interface gives me anxiety...
serious respect for ppl in animation and motion graphics!

    • Wow I must’ve been under a rock. First time I hear about this. Need to check out.NBQ00
    • I tried it, has some fun generative stuff in it, but I never got too into the tutorials.PhanLo
    • Can’t imagine it’s on par with AE and its complexity but yeah need to check out.NBQ00
    • For a beta/1.0 it's the only interesting contender to AE so far.evilpeacock
    • but....it is as if they are saying 'you want this because it is better' not...much cheaper
      ...
      dkoblesky
    • If I am going to put out $25 a month...I may as well pay for AEdkoblesky
    • Got a feeling shapesalad had a go with it? Don’t think it’s a genuine AE alternative.MrT
    • It’s not like AE. I used the Beta. It’s more an gui for code based graphics effects in a 2D vector space. You can do complex graphical setups.shapesalad
    • Limited use for it in my opinion.shapesalad
    • Best way to think about - it’s a 2D version of cinema 4D’s mograph, thinking particles and xpresso.shapesalad
    • I guess there must be demand for it if they charge $25/moNBQ00
    • I always thought AE should incorporate some of Cinema 4D's mograph approach to parametric effectors. You can do it with Expressions but it's a bit complex.CyBrainX

Welp... My Adobe Cloud subscription stopped letting me open up Photoshop CS6.

Sure, I can run their bloated 2020 version, but it hogs my system resources, includes features I don't need/use, and has some annoying keyboard shortcuts that I don't want to bother remapping.

I'm pretty certain the only way I can continue to use CS6 is to purchase a license, even though I'm paying Adobe every month for a subscription that includes Photoshop.

    • Yeah, I have hit the point of diminishing returns with regard to features / performance. The 22.0 release is laggy as all shit, so i'm not bothering any more.face_melter
    • If software is subscription based and updates regularly... why isn't apple leasing hardware. Pay monthly fee and get new hardware with software updates.shapesalad
    • Otherwise, as currently, it gets out of sync. Software updates to the point hardware is useless.shapesalad
    • The old model of buy hardware, buy software was better for the user. perhaps even the environment.shapesalad
    • No argument there shapesalad!nocomply
    • I called the 800 number for support to get some clarification on the issue. Current wait time is 1:18. That's 1 hour & 18 minutes. FFS!nocomply
    • ^vs. asking for Apple support a guy from Apple Ireland calling me back in under 5 mins, then fixing the issue in 6-7 minutes...grafician
    • The olden days Adobe would release a new version (of Ps) every 18-24 months and they were never severe. Now every two months they throat-fuck you.face_melter

So 3 days into Adobe Photoshop 2021 (as opposed to old, reliable CS6) and I get the old "Adobe Photoshop has unexpectedly quit" message.

Friends, who among you is a newly converted Affinity Photo user?

I'm seriously considering ditching Adobe altogether. I only use it for Photoshop and Adobe fonts.

    • 2021 is rank garbage on older hardware - use the CC app and roll back to a 2018 / 19 version.face_melter
    • Adobe Fonts doesn’t work with a CC subscription anymore. There are alternatives of coursenb
    • i just got on the affinity train. enjoying it.colin_s

how can your parents be proud of you as a designer if you do shit like this...

    • I know right, check my post below, all the icons are the same... From a design company, i mean dats the best they can do?Bennn
    • dear mother gawd!!VectorMasked
    • Subscription cash, baby! I'm soak-testing cracked versions of Ps just now, if they run ok then i'm done. I already own Lr from years ago.face_melter
    • Did Adobe not read Apple UI guidelines? Or maybe a bug?NBQ00
    • Why do you have maps, notes and reminders in your dock???monospaced

I had to uninstall Photoshop 2021 and revert back to PS 2020, PS 2021 keep crashing for no apparent reason. "Adobe Photoshop has unexpectedly quit" Fuck you Adobe!

    • yeah, i have that same issue.Bluejam
    • https://affinity.ser…hans_glib
    • Same here, across the board on all apps, except for Bridge. Because Bridge is so important.fyoucher1

Well I must say that "crying" helps.

I pay 36,59€ at the moment.
I should start paying 57, 59 from next month on.
After contacting Adobe Support I will be paying 34,69 for a year.
    And I'll receive a 4€ refund.

Every year sort of the same story for four years now.
    Awesome!

    • even with discounted rates for a lot of people who asked for them, Adobe made billions in profit last yeargrafician
    • hardly surprising when they're just scamming everyone for €400+ a time.hans_glib
    • @graf and @hans I know guys I know, but for me not having to pay those 20€ it's a victory everytime :-Doey_oey
    • More like 240EUR..

And yes, I'm due my twice annual customer support chat with Adobe.

I wish in Illustrator you could 'export' as a PDF, instead of having to save as a PDF, which gets really annoying when you still have it open, edit it, hit save.... then later open the AI file to see the edits are not there, because you were editing the PDF.

Yeah confusing and annoying as I want the PDF as an exported output format from my master AI file. I don't want to 'convert' my ai file to PDF and continue working in a PDF file.

    • oh..ok.. export for screens after making a pdf preset.shapesalad
    • affinity designer will do this, just sayinghans_glib
    • I have made a habit of saving twice, once as pdf for export, then again for the ai file. Just roll in the pdf export dialogue from InDesign, for fuck's sake.face_melter
    • THIS!!!!!!monospaced
    • "Save a Copy" in File menu!fyoucher1
    • 'Export for screens' will export each artboard as a single PDF. FFS.... no multipage option.shapesalad
    • This drives me mental. Illustrator is just a mess to be fair. Why have mesh options which put my 3 year old Mac on its knees?Ianbolton
    • Why have smart guides and inferencing if they don't mean shit? Click on the edge to start, go back to zoom in and it's pixels off. WTF?monospaced
    • Don't tell me "Center" or "Anchor" if it's not 100% true. Close isn't gonna cut it.monospaced
    • check snap to pixel is off. but yeah, total shite. maths behind it all is dodgy.shapesalad
    • Fuck snap to pixel too. What a crock of shit that is.monospaced
    • Yeah, Snap to pixel is a shit default. I turn that off every time.CyBrainX
    • In Illustrator, just save a copy for PDFs. Export screens if you want a multipage PDF from artboards. Those methods have been working for me for years.CyBrainX

"when your subscription ends for any reason, just don't close Ai or Ps or restart your Mac, keep the apps open for 2-3 months for free with the system on standby"

  • Wolfboy2

    @Shapesalad

The PDF issue you mentioned a few posts up ^^ is a ball ache alright. It's such a standard thing we have to do on a daily basis.

My work around is having a 'dead' artboard. I set up artboard 1 as a small board and stick it away up in the top left of the pasteboard. When I save as PDF I then always use page range, starting at artboard 2 and running to the end of the document. That way it saves, but leaves the working file as an .ai

But this kind of bullshit work around is not something you should have to do with an expensive industry standard bit of software.

How is 5 year old Adobe XD on version 34.4.12.3
Yet 33 year old Illustrator is only on version 25.0.0?

    • XD is updating at least a few times a month and they've been aggressive about the scope of versioning.evilpeacock
    • This is ver. 25 of the CC iteration of Illustrator. They fucked their numbering system wihen Creative Suite was introduced.face_melter
    • it's still kind of garbage. and i'm now on 35.xx.xx.xlvl_13
