Adobe's take on 3D is out for download, to CC-only users I think. Can't try it just now as we use Win7 in the office. Will try at home on Win10.

    I expect absolute fuckery.

    • Looks like a more basic SketchUp with half rendering capabilitiesformed
    • I wish they stop wasting time on these amateur softwares and instead remake Ai / Ps etc from the ground up.fruitsalad
    • It feels like at the core of Ai is software code and concepts from 20 years ago. with a couple of new features bolted on the top.fruitsalad

Turns out there is less fuckery than I expected.

There are some interesting things going in with this which are far more complex than they appear - IBL/HDR lighting, shadow catchers, GI/physical rendering (which is a given seeing as it uses the Vray engine - ver. 3 I presume which allows you to pause/resume renders). A surprisingly powerful piece of kit let down by the interface and severe editing limitations.

You drag/drop objects and materials into the scene, import an image as a background, use automated navigation to align everything, add lights and then push render. A few minutes later you get a picture. If they fold it into Ps I can see it having its uses but as a standalone 3D thing it will go nowhere - as it stands now it is almost too simple - relying on pre-fab Adobe or janky 3ds/obj models is limiting, especially considering those imports have to be correctly organised to allow the materials to work.

Maybe i'm dismissive because I do this stuff for a living and expect more hands on control, but, as a demo and as a proof of concept it is definitely interesting and worth testing.

    • nice review.
going to download it and give it a try.

I started updating my apps to Adobe CC 2017 soon after updating my OS to Sierra. I was worried since I'm on a late 2012 iMac here. Sure enough, things came to a screeching halt and Photoshop was not happy. I couldn't even access GPU acceleration, 3D, or OpenGL in Adobe CC software. This was not good.

Google searching led me through forums, many going back years, but I eventually found a general purpose NVIDA driver update for all Mac hardware. I downloaded and installed it, and after a reboot, happy to say this Mac is feeling healthy again. Not only is Photoshop and other CC apps moving quick again, so is the Finder and everyday stuff that might use the GPU.

Basically, I recommend you all install this update, which provides CUDA support, to all Mac users out there with old NVIDIA GPUs. It seems Apple didn't include updated drivers in Sierra.

    Cheers.

    • Useful Thread?monospaced
    • Oh lol same shit i went trough a month ago or so :) but ps@the office imacs is still using way more resources than before.sted
    • I can't believe I had to hunt this down! It's a major thing. Even things like going full screen with an app or video is now butter smooth again. WTF Apple?monospaced
    • Releasing driver updates only through OS updates is a fucking nonsense. I did the same thing to try and eke out more performance.face_melter
    • Did it work? This started for me when Photoshop couldn't recognize my GPU. It wasn't even an Adobe issue, it's an Apple one.monospaced
    • Bizzare, I haven't seen any of this with the Macs I admin at work. I use that NVidia driver in my hot-rodded 2010 Mac Pro with PC NVidia card though.evilpeacock
    • Dude, thank you!!! Had the same issue and it was driving me nuts. All good now.OP31
    • ^^ I did see better stability in Ps, especially with scaling/rotation. But the GPU's in iMacs are such garbage it was already a losing battle.face_melter
    • It seems that with every new 'new' version of CC, rather than point updates, the GPU requirements increase.face_melter
    • It's crazy. My 2012 machine used to be a beast with Photoshop. It still should be all things considered.monospaced
    • In all honesty, I would roll back to the 2015 version of Ps - seems to be the sweet spot between features and poke. On older hardware at least.face_melter
    • I run 2015 on my Lenovo Windows tablet Surface thing and it goes fine even on the lowly Intel GPU. 2017 is like lead-filled ass.face_melter
    • On sys prefs, the cuda upate tab will give you this release. It tooks weeks and weeks to be updated.meffid

Affinity Designer and Photo are wonderful alternatives to Adobe CC. Affinity is also working on a indesign alternative as well.

I begrudgingly have a CC subscription. I can't get away from LR and the occasional Adobe files from clients/contracts. However I was quite happy to be able to send a PDF to get e-signed. Thought I needed a Adobe Docs subscription for that.

  • inteliboy0

Any idea how I can stop Indesign from changing my text colour??

It's going to be a PDF document mostly for screen and I want to use RGB colours, yet it refuses to allow me to do this and automatically adjusts to safe CMYK gamut.

    • I figured out I can do it manually by using the color tab... but can't if click the colour swatch.... a UI mess...inteliboy

    • Any preset works as long as you convert to rgb in the output settings. You might also have bad color settings in play to work out.monospaced

Have Adobe taken off the space bar short cut to scroll around a page in PS? Ever since the last update mine has stopped working.

    • No joke, sometimes that is caused by having a browser open at the same time.monospaced
    • Same. Annoying as fuck. Also, Illy now zooms in/out on selected items instead of the current view. Fucked with my head for a while until I figured it out.monoboy

@mono - I have an older iMac I use for various bits - 2009. Generally okay as I mainly use it for music production but have noticed some GPU issues - do you think that Nvidia update would help with an even older iMac?

I know the whole machine needs updating - I will be soon hopefully. But would be nice to get some extra performance out of it for now.

    Thanks.

    • only just seen your post by the way - I know it's 6 months old.fadein11
    • Can't hurt to try. It could also be an aging gpu?monospaced
    • Thanks.fadein11
    • The drivers below might not apply to your OS version or machine. I don't remember what it addressed exactly. My old 2008 iMac also has gpu issues.monospaced

They've made a few changes in photoshop. Better UX but annoying getting used to it. Now when you resize a shape, instead of having to phold shift to keep it in proportion, it keeps it in proportion automatically and holding shift does the opposite.

Also, now instead of having to hold shift when hitting cmd > z if you want to go back more than one step, it does it automatically and holding shift does the complete opposite.

Unfathomable to me that these incredibly obvious UX choices have only been implemented now in 2019. Also rather amusing that literally the opposite of how it was before is the far better experience.

Getting this in to my subconscious is going to take a while, and it makes it even trickier that it hasn't been updated in illustrator to match.

    • that new PS resizing is such a mind-bender.
why change such a tiny but fundamental thing?

    I've had it!

It takes up to 5 seconds before the new document window loads in when creating a new document in PS and Illustrator!

Come on Adobe, bring back the old plain and simple new document dialogue box!

Had to call customer support regarding subscription / billing. Go through slow phone menu system, in queue, picked up by a call centre in India, give case number, they need 2 mins to read case notes, then confirm what they read, go through it all again, with thick Indian accent "so you want to refund your cancellation and take subscription with discount? What price discount you given?" Me: "what are you looking at on your screen - surely you can see the discount I was quoted last week when contacting customer support? No? Ok it was £10 per month" Call Centre guy: "For adobe CC!? no sir the price not so low." Me" Ok so why are you asking me what the discount is, give me the discount you can offer", them "sorry sir what is the discount you've been offered" Me" £1 per month". "Ok let me put you on hold and talk to my supervisor".... click... call ends.

    Call again, same thing.

And again X 8 times eventually.

Didn't even get chance to say 100% I confirm to new subscription at discount rate. Get email after 8th call saying new subscription started. Had no ability to see this offer online within my account, still can't find my billing section within my online adobe account, can't find where my payment details are, will now cancel subscription as free to do so within 14 days. Had originally cancelled it due to going full-time and not needing it, but had been charged 50% of the remaining 10months of my subscription, got that refunded and offer of cheaper sub, but now after this shite customer experience (had expected to automatically go onto the new subscription after confirming it online), I'm done with Adobe.

    Adobe = sucks.

    • ok. I wasn't playing ball by saying £10 and £1 a month, but by the 7th call I'd lost the will to live...shapesalad

    Question for Illustrator.

Anyone know how / if I can change my settings to better represent black in document?

I have C0 M0 Y0 K100 and C100 M100 Y100 K100 in the same document and they look exactly the same while the document is open.

However, once I close the document and see the thumbnail, I can easily discern the C0 M0 Y0 K100 from the C100 M100 Y100 K100, as one appears black and the other grey.

is there any way to change my settings to better display this difference?

    ---

    Yes there is.

Illustrator > Preferences > Appearance of Black
    Select "Display all Blacks Accurately"

    • No problem!Nairn
    • thx!imbecile
    • I always set it to display "accurately". Otherwise one can't QC if you need to dial in a rich black build for specific output vendors.evilpeacock

I don't mean to sound like a total spaz, but having clicked "Add fonts from Typekit" in the relevant dialogue on the Character Menu in Illustrator, then Activating the required font I've found on the Typekit site.. how do I actuall use it in Illy?

I kind of assumed it would just pop up there, but it hasn't. I've tried closing the app and re-opening, but nada.

I presume I'm doing something wrong?

(It's a total shit font too - I was surprised to see it wasn't on the likes of Dafont but was in Typekit..)

    • OK, I'm assuming it's cos I've not got the actual CC app running in the background. This has led me to another clusterfuck of pointlessness, wasting more of myNairn
    • ..time and reminding me why I don't have CC running in the background anyway. Nor bothering to update my apps (PS 2014, illy 2017 on my work machine here)Nairn

It's been a while since I've edited portraits in PS and typically stick to Lightroom. Since I last did serious work in PS, they've improved so many features that make things so much easier.

For example, using spot removal>heal is OK in Lightroom for blemishes and stray hair and such, but the Heal tool in PS is way more powerful than that.

    • Definitely true — Adobe seems to consider PS the high-end editor for Lightroom still, hence the offered Photography bundle of the two apps.evilpeacock
    • Lightroom is inherently non-destructive which is really cool except when you don't need it to be. Then it's just limiting.nb
