There is a strong possibility that there may be an investigation and possible prosecution of senior Bush Administration officials regarding torture policy of enemy combatants.
I wonder what Cheney's intention are when defending these interrogation methods in public. Especially since he may very well be investigated and prosecuted. If in fact there is a prosecution, isn't he tainting the jury pool by publicly defending his position?
This may not be the case but he's been quiet for so long on so many important issues that I find it interesting that he is so vocal on this subject.
- ********0
^ As VP, he had to remain silent.
Now, it seems to me that he would like to make clear that the "interrogation" policies as enforced, yielded effective, life-saving results.
Either way, Obama has already made America a decidedly MUCH weaker nation, by his policies, that is.

"Now, it seems to me that he would like to make clear that the "interrogation" policies as enforced, yielded effective, life-saving results."
Sure, I agree with you that at face value he would like to make it clear that he feels it was the right thing to do. Ethical concerns aside, the legal ramifications are what brings into question his intentions.
FYI, this isn't a partisan issue. John McCain is fundamentally opposed to torture and the previous administrations interpretation of torture. But I would not be surprised to hear a complaint from him that classified memos should not have been released...
- ********0
^ There was no compelling reason why these classified documents should have been released. However, since they were, Cheney shall have his wishes.
And then, I recommend that a "Special Committee" be assembled, so that we (the American people) may proceed to investigate ALL of Congress. Does this sound fair?
Then, we should begin an investigation and prosecute Bill Clinton, for his policies. And then, investigate and prosecute "King George I", and Reagan for their policies.
And let's not stop until we're able to investigate EVERY U.S. PRESIDENT. How about that, cause that's EXACTLY where OBAMA just took us.

Anyhow, like I said earlier, Obama's first 100 days are shaping up to be a catastrophe.
Please, don't try and convince me that any of you are truly impressed. I am not that stupid, contrary to popular belief.

The bottom line is that something is either legal or it isn't.
Simple yes or no question. Do you think the U.S. federal government should have the legal power to torture anyone it deems a terrorist?
- ********0
^ Ukit, the problem here, is that no one seems to be able to agree on the definition of "torture".
No matter the definition, what the Administration is doing here is wrong, and unfortunately for Obama, could backfire on him, (therefore us) in a severe manner.
America doesn't transfer power in this manner. Investigating and prosecuting past policies is outrageous. It won't pan out well for the Democrats and Obama knows it. End of story.
- Incredible Clintonian parsing of the word "torture" their. Ironic.TheBIueOne

Substitute torture with waterboarding then.
Should the U.S. federal government should have the legal power to waterboard anyone it thinks is a terrorist?

^ Well, because some "lawyers" said so, I suppose "yes". Also, reportedly, these tactics yielded significant results, during a time of WAR. I repeat, WAR (do you remember 9/11?).
Anyhow, I hope my vague answer doesn't displease you, as I am a simple and straight forward thinker.

You obviously don't know the difference between "opinion" and "fact"...there is absolutely no point in engaging you in discussion.
And extra special bonus Right Wing Retard merit badge points for attempting to shut down further discussion with the "do you remember 9/11?" canard.
Yeah fucktard, I was in NYC that day. My friend and my brother worked in the building next to it and spent hours trying to track him down. I fielded calls from my wife who was called in for emergency triage and had hospital staff dismayed and in tears because their were no victims. So yeah, fucktard, I remember it. But obviously not as your rosy, flag waving rah-rah american patriot ass.
Fuck you. And I mean that. Fuck you jack.

"There was no compelling reason why these classified documents should have been released."
A potential investigation and prosecution is a compelling reason. We'll see if it was a good move to release the documents.
"And then, I recommend that a "Special Committee" be assembled, so that we (the American people) may proceed to investigate ALL of Congress. Does this sound fair?"
Actually yes, and I would say take it one step further. Appoint an independent commission and an international commission to investigate proven abuses in Iraq and what level of command approved such abuses. Especially since it was supposed to be an international effort or coalition of the willing.
"Then, we should begin an investigation and prosecute Bill Clinton, for his policies. And then, investigate and prosecute "King George I", and Reagan for their policies."
Ok, sure but I'm pretty confident that they weren't involved in crafting policy for treatment of enemy combatants and prisoners of war.

"A potential investigation and prosecution is a compelling reason. We'll see if it was a good move to release the documents."
I disagree on a number of grounds.
"Actually yes, and I would say take it one step further. Appoint an independent commission and an international commission to investigate proven abuses in Iraq and what level of command approved such abuses. Especially since it was supposed to be an international effort or coalition of the willing."
The let's investigate proven abuses in ALL WARS and related conflicts
"Ok, sure but I'm pretty confident that they weren't involved in crafting policy for treatment of enemy combatants and prisoners of war."
Oh, and limit investigations to "alleged war related crimes", and dismiss all other crimes that resulted from "iffy" past policies? I don't think so.
In other words, exactly why this, and why now, and importantly, where does this end?
Off to enjoy a beer or two now, while I make some Risotto.
