Probably the only time ever the tourism will be down to practically zero... All those amazing spots who are normally full of tourists 24/7 are now empty. May never happen again.

I'm pretty sure (now the schools are closed) it's primarily the asymptomatic 18-25 year olds and the 70+ "when it's your time to go, its your time to go" crew that are going to be spreading this. Even my girlfriends 21y/o sister (who seems vaguely sensible compared to her friends) is going between her parents house and her boyfriend's parents house every day.

Was thinking: what if all the governments set up free month long festivals for all the asymptomatic under 25s? totally optional (but attractive enough to get the most irresponsible spring-breaker types away from their families)... Stick 'em all in the disused holiday camps, all expenses paid, free corona extra, entirely staffed by under 25s paid well above what they're used to... all the DJs, all the acts would be young and stream shows 24h between countries... There could even be a few in different flavours: a football camp staffed by young international players. A music camp with those moon faced tiktok prats.

Then I remembered, under 25s can't do shit all for themselves. It would inevitably kill more than the virus in drama alone... not to mention armed guards firing on swathes of the feckers trying to escape. Might make a good TV show though.

Watch How the Coronavirus Spread Across the United States

    https://www.nytimes.com/interact…

It started two months ago, just north of Seattle. A young man who had returned from China tested positive for the coronavirus, the first known case in the United States...

But in the past three weeks, everything has changed. As testing expanded and the virus spread, cases have been confirmed by the dozens, then by the hundreds and thousands.

    • My dudes, to stop this in the US, start thinking each state is a "country" in itself and act accordingly! You won't get thru this otherwisegrafician
    • each state: close state borders, close all shops, keep everybody indoors, start testing house to house, keep those infected under guarded quarantinegrafician
    • but sure, much easier than done, 'cuz lots of american have guns and the famous "you can't tell me what to do" attitudegrafician
    • We are graf. That’s how it was set up hundreds of years ago.monospaced
    • I'm sorry to say it, but the US will never go thru this - the logistics are simply impossible, but sure hope so I will be wrong!grafician
    • It becomes really apparent how much open space is in the US when you see maps like thisR_Kercz
    • ^yeah, with 300 mil ppl spread all over the place, very hard to contain anything.grafician

Situation today in Romania (not very important overall, ik, but!):

    433 confirmed
    66 new cases
    64 cured
2 deaths (both men, over 60, one had terminal cancer, the other died due to complication from other chronic disease)
5000+ tested so far, with many thousands more in the following weeks (waiting for 1 mil. test kits from South Korea)

I calculated the percent dead: 0.43%

All this after 25 days since this started in our country.
Population currently around 16 million inside the country.
    Complete lockdown starting tomorrow.

    -
These numbers per 1000 of people, seems to be the norm I've read in many articles claiming that the infection will spread to 50% of the population but kill under 1% - if we reduce de R0 to 1 from 2.5% right now

So if you're in a country that just sees their first confirmed numbers, just start locking everything down - borders first, then any shops/malls/pubs, then keep everybody inside for at least 1 month no exception, then start testing everybody - you will definitely curb this in under a 1 month if you start now!

    • everywhere is important. One country not taking serious measures have the potential to keep infecting others.Beeswax
    • In comparison Turkey banned only 65+ from going outside, the rest is still outside. Iran border is still open thousands walking through the border into Turkey.Beeswax
    • There's not enough masks in the hospitals, but you can find internet sellers asking for x10, there's no gov crack down on them yet.Beeswax
    • One advantage is that number of ICU beds in Turkey is one of the highest in the world. But that is not enough on its own.Beeswax
    • ^ there’s a reasonable argument to be made to quarantine the old while the rest develop immunity.Gnash
    • @Bee @Gnash yes, I think this is their decision - but at least close the borders, so you don't "import" other casesgrafician
    • In Italy it's 80% if all dead are men.
      87% are over 70 yo.
99% have some kind of illness from before.

Maybe too early in the day to say this could be a continuing trend one thing that hit me looking at these graphs from UCL about the spread in UK regions is that you can see how exactly the same measures implemented in NI, Wales and England (at the same time) has resulted in a 35% rate of increase in confirmed cases in England compared to 20% in Northern Ireland when you apply a 10 day (ie. 10 days of fucking around by Boris) offset to match the # confirmed cases.

The day isn‘t over yet, I‘m sure more test results will pour in but:

Today USA is leader in new cases. Nearly 8600 cases today.

And 7150+ of those are in New York alone!

    Damn.

    • Italy 5560 cases and 651 deaths today.NBQ00
    • These numbers are of people finally getting tested. The US was infected 3-4 months ago (and not in the past 2 weeks when numbers started getting reported)Krassy
    • Yes but these are results of today. All new cases are.NBQ00
  • NBQ001

Whoa, USA new cases today now over 12K!!!

    New York alone 11K

    • USA new cases today now over 12.000 people.
In New York alone 11.000 citizens tested positive.
      sted
    • Seems back to around 8K. That worldmeters site annoys me. Recently they keep posting numbers that then get adjusted back again after 10-30 minutes.NBQ00

Now it says USA nearly 14K new cases today: https://www.worldometers.info/co…

    • It seems official now. If true this is huge. And over 12K in NY alone.NBQ00
    • NBQ as sted just explained it's just a number... it doesn't mean anything if you're not doing further statistical analysis.kingsteven
    • It’s just a number maybe. But 14K positively tested in one day when just couple days ago was 1K-2K is still huge. It’s exploding.NBQ00
    • testing is the first stage in controlling the spread, that's still 0.1% of NY population, actual infected will still be far higher...kingsteven
    • ... a leap like that only suggests they're doing something right.kingsteven
    • NBQ00 you need people stay the fuck home and get tested to see close to real infection numbers. first they test the people with symptomssted
    • so that they can get proper care and the health system what is currently sweating blood can keep up with the demand.sted
    • The numbers “new cases” there are positively tested for Covid-19. And those are only official numbers. Of course way more are infected without knowingNBQ00
    • But it’s still showing the explosion. Especially NY seems a bad place to be in right now.NBQ00
    • god fuck how many ways you need to explain this: if you start testing and release these numbers before people are separated/isolated AT HOME.sted

    • That’s your conspiracy theory?NBQ00
    • What is so hard to understand that the virus is spreading exponentially. And I’m just in awe looking at it exploding daily and numbers increasing.NBQ00
    • no conspiracy here man, i'm sleeping 2-4 hours because i have to be up in 3 timezones, and two of these is because of people who are actually dealing with this.sted
    • you have no idea how hard this is, so fuck you.sted
    • Sorry you’re going through a hardship but what does it have to do with these numbers or what i posted. Anyway, hope your situation will be better soon.NBQ00
    • don't feel sorry for anything just understand please that these numbers will grow because of tests not because the virus is spreading at the moment.sted
    • & "That’s your conspiracy theory?" you asked this question.sted
    • look at them as identified cases. that‘s the number they found treating patients. such high numbers neans: communal spread, it‘s already everywhere.uan
    • Because it sounds like you’re saying that the virus has already infected most people and isn’t spreading anymore because all are isolated at home.NBQ00
    • Not sure why this is causing a stir to show identified cases daily that are increasing and exploding. Of course actual infected are higher without them knowingNBQ00
    • https://cdn.boldomat…robotron3k
    • Agree calling these 'New' cases isn't that helpful, Identified cases is probably much better given how what we know is running 1-2 weeks behind.webazoot
    • Until everyone can be tested, the numbers only serve as a 'sample' to inform localised action.monoboy

My Father in Law is a retired Clinical Psychologist with many close friends still in the medical community... he was kind enough to share this letter a friend at Johns Hopkins recently sent out to colleagues. It’s not exactly ‘new’ info but it’s without political motivation.

A long, but detailed explanation of why COVID-19 is so different from the flus we are used to and why social distancing is critical at this time -- from an immunologist at Johns Hopkins University...

“Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.
Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from ANIMALS....the WHO (World Health Organization) tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem. Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity. The RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human. For years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human, before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human. Once that happens, we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, that’s what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be.

H1N1 was deadly, but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently too.
    Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China in Late 2019, it mutated and made the jump from ANIMAL TO PEOPLE. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated AGAIN and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”.

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity), took off like a rocket!! And this was because humans have no known immunity... doctors have no known medicines for it. And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way that it causes great damage to human lungs.

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics.

Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now, and frankly stupid and selfish.
#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.”

    • Didn’t humans also get the common flu from horses? And HIV from apes?NBQ00
    • Virus mutation how the fuck they work?
the two types were identified in the early stages by china, no other sign of the virus changing.
