I may have to change my PC soon. I currently have a Dell tower, a Studio XPS. Its huge, got a LOT wires everywhere and I now want to go small with less clutter.

With a new computer, I'd still want to use 2 monitors and would use it to work with 24mpx pictures in Photoshop (probably higher resolution pictures in a couple years if I change my camera) So i'd need power to run photo editing tools.

Any recommendations? Laptops, super small PC's ?? Dunno

i run an msi gaming laptop with 2 ultrawides, i could run 3 if i wanted to, i can run fat AE files and Resolve with no issues.

switched to pc after i lost 2 mac pro desktops in 2 years, living on the beach where it’s hot fucks my shit up, just sucks hot humid salt air through itself all day long.

    • 1/2 the price of mac pro trash can at twice the speedmoldero
    • i know, i switched from Mac to PC a few years ago for that reason, half the price for twice the speed :)Bennn

    Build one?

These intel ones are pretty small:

    https://www.anandtech.com/show/1…

But really, unless you NEED it small, you're better off with a full size tower for the performance and value.

    • I'd really like to get rid of some wires and save some space yeah... those full tower are big and I have a small office room.Bennn

    Problem solved

The new iMac Pro is no joke. Up to 18 cores, 128GB DDR4, and less chords. Fully pimped out = $13,000 USD. Even the base model is pretty fast.
    https://www.apple.com/imac-pro/

    • starting at 5k, yes, no jokeOBBTKN
    • the only joke is the apple pricinghelloeatbreathedrive
    • If you want to pay 13k for non upgradeable two years old hardware which Apple refuses to repair for the silliest of reasons then OK.mekk
    • a PC workstation with similar specs costs about the same, so where's the joke @helloeatbreathedriv...ernexbcn

    • Robbery. I built a more powerful pc a few years ago for 3k including oled monitorimbecile
    • they are having a laugh right? Thats insainly priced. Put those components into a linux/windows build and take a holiday... or 3mugwart
    • 13k? That's Surface money right there...docpoz
    • 13k? lolol. No. You could build a render farm and a PC with top of the line specs for that money.section_014
    • I guess Apple is banking on ppl that don’t want to\ can’t build their own, and don’t want to switch to PC. Like me.dopepope
    • I just want a powerhouse computer to do my 3D work. But they’ve priced me out with that. I can’t buy that thing.dopepope
    • How much does a stand-alone 27” 5k display cost? How much does a stand-alone 18 core CPU cost? All those parts ain’t cheap at all.monospaced
    • Of course you can build something similar, but you can’t recreate it for the price that I know of.monospaced
    • The intel chip on the base model retails for almost $2k alone.monospaced
    • The video card is at least $650 and the display equivalent is at least $1300.monospaced
    • shut the fuck up. that thing is priced purely for profit. it's so plain and you're so simple.imbecile
    • Yeah but so is a Ferrari, for the same price you can have the homer._niko
    • any computer is priced for profit unless you try to build it, and I'm not "simple" ... are you here to help or just be a cunt to me imbecile? holy fuck grow up!monospaced
    • if you want to discuss this like a grown up sane human, try finding price parts and actually show me I'm wrong. Until then you're just being a cunt.monospaced
    • I literally outlined that in only 3 parts, you're already at $4,000, and that's not even with a case or power supply or any other partsmonospaced
    • so at $5k, it's not actually a bad dealmonospaced
    • mono: the base model doesn't come with 18 cores, that's the $13k version. It's about twice the price of a PC.zarkonite
    • I know that. I priced the base model version at $650. The 18 core is thousands more retail anywhere.monospaced
    • Oh I mean $2k.monospaced
    • yeah and that $2k version offers you less than a PC will.zarkonite

got mine from cclonline.co.uk (uk) you can configure every part of it. got an i7 rig (ex gfx card which i already have) for £600 its a beast!

the Dell XPS 15. If you can daisychain your displays, you're all set. If not, get the Razer Core GPU case and slap your current GPU in.

  • Fax_Benson0

Get a new laptop - Dell / Surface / HP i7 and use it as your desktop. You'll use less space, fewer wires, you don't have to put it on the floor and you can take it out with you.

    • are those powerfull enough?Bennn
    • Yes, they can be. I run an external monitor and Cintiq out of a 3 year old i7 Dell.imbecile
    • Thy beat any current MacBook Pro, should be enough for image editingmekk

New XPS are pretty small. I have one old one, and one older one. They've been getting smaller and smaller for a while now.

The new XPS laptop look pretty nice.

When I travel I've been using a Surface to control desktops via Teamviewer. I have an external monitor (27" Dell) I picked up and left at my parent's house. It's really amazing how easy it is to do (no lag, etc., though it does suck when the power goes out and someone has to restart Teamviewer).

All the laptops iam looking at can only take up to 16Gb of RAM... This isn't a lot of RAM... Is there any laptops out there that take 32Gb of RAM ??

    • I was interested by the Microsoft Surface, but they only take 16Gb of RAM :-/Bennn

Your best value is going to come from building it yourself. There are some great guides on how to do this, or you can spec it out at a local parts store and get them to do the assembly for you.

If you're really adventurous you could even build a Hackintosh.

  • detritus0

Bit late now, but I recall Bennnnnnn asking about laptops with large RAM...

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/20…

"Both the Precision 7530 and Precision 7730 can run a six-core Xeon E-2176M at 2.70GHz and can ship with up to 64GB of RAM (but can handle 128GB if Dell gets around to shipping 32GB DIMMs for the four-slot beasts).

You can slip Radeon or NVIDIA GPUs inside too."

    • too bad they have a keypad. Older precisions were great, but keypad kills it for me (ergonomics, shifted off to the left forever won't work for me)formed

heres my new mini beast in progress

lenovo thinkpad x250 i5, new internal battery, extended 2nd hot-swapable battery, 4gb ram (to be upgraded), 500gb hdd (ssd ordered), 12in fhd screen updated

    check deze ports bro:

no wwan planned but theres a slot for it (might put an m.2 ssd in there and heep the physical disk for storage)

Recently bought an HP Zbook for video:

Intel Xenon 4 core at 3.8ghz
    512gb ssd
    32Gb Ram
    NVIDA Quadro M1000 w 2gb + Iris Pro Graphics P580 w 4gb

It's amazingly fast for rendering. I still prefer my Macbook Pro for coding but it's hard to beat the price / performance of the HP.

there are so many fantastic options right now. I recommend a desktop with companion laptop.

but if you want to maintain a mobile experience I recommend BOXX, they have been and continue to provide the best solution for production hardware.

    • Cool. Only 1080 displays though.monospaced
    • yeah, but with such a small size that come with laptops, i don't notice the difference.plash
    • I’ve grown accustomed to the high res displays on so many laptops we use (windows and macs).monospaced
    • holy shit, boxx is still kicking it?! always thought they had decent hardware specs for pcsjaylarson
    • i had a boxx workstation back in 2004 and loved it... the laptops look great and I guess i'd rather have 4k on external but 1080 on a $4k laptop really? dammmn.kingsteven
    • Especially with a 1050 card in it. Anyway looks like good spec.monospaced

If there was slightly more software support for Linux, I'd go with a System76:

    BUMP! ##############

Any suggestions for a desktop PC, I dont want a laptop anymore.

I'm looking towards DELL and LENOVO but I'm not sure of anything

Any desktop PC suggestions for a Windows 10 machine with 32Gb of RAM ?

    • Go buy some computer magazines - that's what I always do whenever new computer time comes up. Shit changes all the time, no constants.detritus

@Bennn build yourself. Start setting a budget (I recommend something between 1k-1.5k) and base it off the best CPU that fits your budget. Use pcpartpicker.com for compatibility and parts list.

Assuming you need it for photo, video and simple rendering I'd start with the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X CPU (8 Cores).

    Here is what you need:
    - CPU (+ I recommend all-in-one watercooling block. No hazzle, super silent)
    - Mainboard with fitting socket (AM4 for this CPU)
    - 4x 8 RAM, 3200mhz+
    - SSD (M.2, buy it instead of SATA)
    - Power Supply (Don't cheap out!)
    - GPU (nVidia if you need Cuda, AMD is cool too if not. I recommend a GTX 1050 for non-gamers)
    - A case you like. Everything fits with parts younger than 2010.
    - A set of silent fans (120mm or what your case of choice has)
    - Windows License

    Pros:
    - Warranty on every single part, esp. with quality brands
    - You know your system
    - Way cheaper

    Cons:
    - You have to build it yourself, but It's like Lego

    • thanks mekk. I never done this before.. do i need to stick the CPU with some glue or somthing? that look complicated and trickyBennn
    • whats 'Cuda' ?Bennn
    • If you don't know Cuda, you don't need it.mekk
    • CPU's have some handle that holds it in place. There is a small drop of thermal paste that needs to be applied between the cooler and the CPU.mekk
    • Use Linus Tech Tips YouTube channel, they have a ton of building guides and part lists for every budget and usemekk
    • What system would you biuld for photo editing? Under 2,000$CADBennn
    • I don't know Canada pricing but I'd build pretty much what I wrote. 16GB RAM is enough, you can still upgrade anytime you want. Linus is Canadian :-)mekk
    • https://ca.pcpartpic…mekk
    • thanks mekkBennn
    • One tip. Don't underestimate how to place the cpu in the socket and apply thermal paste. Watch some videos.err
    • One tip. Don't underestimate how to place the cpu in the socket and apply thermal paste. Watch some videos.err
    • Specially the AMD Ryzen CPUs they can feel like you are going to break it. but if you are sure its placed right you wont have to worry.err
    • thats the tricky part i'm not sure I want to try... sticking the CPU..Bennn
    • @benn. For photo editting, just get the newest dell xps tower. They go on sale all the time, then get a dell monitor with premiercolor for aRGB workflow. ~$2kmonNom
    • how much does a Windows license run these days?monospaced
    • @mono around 110$ i thinkBennn
    • @monNom, i'll check them, thats what I own atm a Dell XPS tower from 5 years ago. Those are huge tho..Bennn
    • Big is good. Heat is the enemy of electronics, so big with proper ventilation will live way longer.monNom
    • @Bennn its not hard just don't go and wing it with out spending 2 mins on youtube first.err

    Is this good ?? >>

    DELL XPS

    Windows 10 pro
    XPS 8930, Mainstream Chassis (460W)
    8th gen Intel® Core™ i7-8700 (6-Core, 12M Cache, up to 4.6 GHz)
    DDR4 - 32Go 2666MHz
    HDD1 : 7 200rpm : 1 To
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050Ti with 4GB GDDR5

    • Perfect. The only change I'd suggest is a 256ssd + 2tb hard disk. Use the ssd for OS and scratch disk, HD for storage.monNom
    • depends on the price. This config should not exceed $1000 USD prebuilt. Expect loud fans, cheap PSU and bloatware.mekk
    • But it works too and the config is, instead of the HDD, a good start. Again, 16GB is enough.mekk
    • The Dell XPS i own is having power problems and he fans are super loud, lolBennn
