Any of you guys living with this? Mine has been pretty quiet up until a few days ago when it went to noticeable in most quiet situations.

Do you blast the music a lot?

90% of the problem with tinnitus is in noticing it.

Sorry, not much use, I'm sure - try and distract yourself: turn off the computer and go walk the streets, or something?

    • I think "go for a walk" is pretty much my default response for any body, soul or mind question on QBN.detritus

I got persistent tinnitus and use this (white noise) once in a while at work:

I've always been very interested by tinnitus, having noticed as a child that I could never hear 'perfect silence' - the quieter it got, the more I would hear a quiet but constant high-pitched whine. Given I lived in the far off countryside, it got pretty unquiet-quiet.

On top of that I'd get genuine tinnitus on occasion and would be interested by the fact i ciould hear a TV in a far off room whereas few else could.

My poor Dad gets it pretty bad and has tried lots - I think he's had, like nbq above, some relief from white noise generators.

    This makes sense to me.

As a species, we grew up near forests or oceans, sources of types of white-ish noise that we'd've evolved to grow up near, with whatever resultant impact on hearing that might have.

Given we have insulated houses and cars and headphones only pumping in certain frequency ranges, it makes sense to me that our brains and eardrums could be over-compensating and getting shit wrong.

As i say, the biggest thing with it it having it drive your focus towards itself.

Every time I've had a bad bout of tinnitus I've ended up simply realising a while after that it's gone, and I've no idea how or when it happened, other than I know I'd forgotten about is somewhere along the line.

    • "As i say, the biggest thing with it IS having it drive your focus towards itself", soz.detritus
    • I passed some tests and the conclusion is that there is nothing you can really do besides white noise and hearing aids which I don't/wont plan on wearing soon..nbq
    • Yeah, I think the 'reason' for tinnitus is a good few years away from proper scientific understanding yet... unfortunately :(detritus
    • i think there are also different sorts too, with some perhaps being blood-flow related, from tense neck muscles and such. The 'in-brain' stuff's a cunt though.detritus

Reginald Denny, the guy who was badly assaulted from the LA riots was hit on the side of the head pretty bad and said he constantly hear's a loud ringing on one of his ears.

  • pinkfloyd0

I use to walk across a bridge going to work for several months, and I would blast my in ear headphones at top volume. I developed mild tinnitus from it.

My brother has bad tinnitus, to the point that with any quiet he has a white noise machine or headphones for white noise tracks from his phone. He goes nuts over long periods as he says it can seem incredibly loud. The theory is nerve damage from a very botched wisdom tooth extraction.

I get a ringing from time to time when it's quiet and it's actually from muscle tension. Releasing tension in my jaw and/or neck reduces or eliminates it. I'm told that this is not actual tinnitus.

So maybe for some, try stress/tension relief and see if that helps.

    • He also is a celiac, so one doc says it can occur from that too.ETM
  • i_monk0

Yup. I've had it in my left ear for 13-14 years now, and I think it's creeping into my right ear. The past few months have been bad, with rare times that I'm not aware of it.

Not strictly related to tinnitus but interesting none the less. An old Serbian guy who makes some amazing ambient / drone music

"Upon taking retirement from a job at a factory which he held for decades, Mogard craved the mechanical noise and complex harmonics of the industrial workplace, and found that the best way to fulfil that need was through electronic music - using a limited set-up of Farfisa organs, voices, samplers and a self-built modular system"

In my right ear, I developed an 'apparent' form of tinitus.

I can hear my pulse which sounds like walking on fresh snow in that goes in time with my heartbeat.

It's never ending, gets louder when I'm stressed and drives me insane and worst of all makes me want to go snowboarding :(

I had a mastoidectomy replacing the infected anvil, stirrup and hammer in both ears with prosthetic ones. Since then I've had tinnitus.

To be fair, I can only hear the loud ringing when I turn the music off.

Apparently it's caused by damaging the tiny hairs in the inner ear.

Ringing in my right ear is driving me nutz lately. Got a pair of flareaudio calmer ear buds after reading some unexpected good results from people with tinnitus. I've worn them a few days a few hours each time. If anything I feel calmer due to the way it filters noise. They helped a little so far. I'll fkn try anything at this point. X(

Ok, so if you're inside your home, and you hear the buzzing, can you go unplug your AC and check if you heart it again after?

Some ACs if not all of them - when on idle - or just plugged - not when working ofc - they make this buzzing sound that really resembles tinnitus.

Also check your blood pressure while at it...
