Age and roommate?

Starting to notice that quite a few of my friends that are late 30s / early 40s still live with roommates. I guess there's not an exact age just you start living by yourself (and a few of these guys are in Brooklyn, so I'm sure cost has a bit to do with it).
Curious how many of you have roommates and how old you are. If so, what's keeping you from living by yourself?

i'm turning 33 this year.
except for a gf i haven't lived with someone for over 5 years, and i never will again, unless it's a gf...
i do own my apartment (and have for over 7 years). i co-owned with my brother and we lived together for a couple of years, but he moved and i bought him out. that definitely makes a big difference. i don't need to look for cheaper rent, as you mentioned.

I think it definetely has something to do with $$$. Although some people do enjoy or need the company of a roommate.
I myself lived with girlfriends and roommates from 19 til I was 29. I did it mostly to save money. I though it´d be better to spend $600 instead of like $1200 to live alone, and save money to buy nicer stuff.

Agree with VM, especially if you live somewhere like NYC/SF etc.
I've lived with roommates/girlfriends since I've been in NYC (living with current GF in a pretty decent sized 1br at the moment).- Total rent for our place is $1850.duckseason
- Total rent for my place in NYC with my girlfriend is over $3Kmonospaced
- We're out in Bed-Stuy. Traded convenience for space, amenities and, obviously, cost. Though, I can still get to the city in about 20 minutes.duckseason

- We're in Murray Hill, commute is just a few steps. ;)monospaced
- I'd love to move back to the city; however, the rising costs are getting harder and harder to justify.duckseason
- totally... I was open to moving across the river, but she wasn't... maybe when we get marriedmonospaced
- Murray Hill is the most boring part of Manhattan?freedom
- $1850 for Bed Stuy, do or die???? NYC is insane.freedom
- I hope you got a really nice spot for $1850 in Stuy.freedom
- Murray might be slightly boring, but it's a great place to live, and it's very conveniently located in Manhattanmonospaced

I've owned a house since '07 and have randomly had roommates throughout those years. I'd go for a while paying my mortgage myself, then feel like renting a room out and saving some cash. The last roommate helped me afford new carpet, and some bathroom upgrades.
Now my GF lives with me, paying me some rent, but I'm constantly broke!!

i'm 31, have shared a house and a flat with two different chaps... one i went to school with, which was a fucking nightmare...
he had never lived by himself, was left a bit of cash and bought a house, one that was needing quite extensive work needing to be done on it. we were both 19, he was a postman and a horrific drinker. He would knock off from work at between 12:00-13:00 and drink until he came home which was normally about 11 in the evening. Now he could drink and drink and drink until he passed out and then would not wake up. you could punch him in the sack and he'd not even flinch.i remember flicking him in his eyeball and he didn't move... it was a nightmare as i had to wake him up everyday at 4 in the morning as his alarm wouldnt stir him. water would though... he couldn't cook, grilling 4 bernard matthews turkey drumsticks, from frozen, under a grill that was on maximum, until they were black on the outside and warm mush on the inside would look worrying? not to him. he ate three and had food poisoning for nearly 2 weeks. All i heard of him was his footsteps as he ran from his bed to the loo, the sound of his ass vacating the toxic turkey drumstick goo, then him slumping back into bed... i remember going to france to buy cheap booze only to have him and his lady "friends" drink my entire stock... he lost his virginity to two girls... this is classic... he was drunk (when wasn't he!) one girl was riding his dick, one was sat on his face, great first time you'd think? no... he woke up to an empty bed other than blood everywhere, his screams alerted me to his room, there was blood all over his sheets, on the wall, but most upsetting was the mask of dried blood all over his face... he couldn't remember what had happened thought he'd murdered someone, only to run through the evenings happenings with me to finally work out that one of the ladies had come on... on his face!!. i woke up another morning after much twattiness to find clumps of hair all over the floor, all up the stairs i followed this trail of hair to his bedroom, i walked in, he had had one of his many alcoholic moments, past out, and his "friends" had sprayed his hair red and cut him a rather fetching mohawk! anyways, he was a cunt.
the other guy was an older dude, he was cool...thats it really... what a rant that was.
- whoa, let's get some more line breaks in therepinkfloyd
- yeah... i kind of just rattled that one off... sorry about that!cruddlebub

Living alone since my divorce 10 years ago. Girlfriend of 7 years has her own place. We decided to keep it this way so we don't sick of each other.

Thanks for the responses and keep em coming. When I was eventually making enough in Chicago to get my own place I couldn't wait to split off from having a roommate. That was when I was maybe 28 or 29, can't exactly remember. I had two apartments from 2001 - 2007, first with a friend i moved from Texas with, second with a Chicago friend and we were in a band together.
I think my first studio apartment in a nice part of Chicago was $750 a month; I remember being so excited that I could afford that and utilities all myself each month.
I think that settling down with a solid girlfriend has a lot to do with eventually not living with a guy friend. I wanted my own place for a few years before I figured we'd get engaged and/or live together. We bought our condo in 2010 and got married in 2012.

The main motivator for me getting my own place was really because I was just fed up with sharing my shit. All the shared spaces were filled with my furniture, TV, and things, and when I got home and my roommate(s) were using my stuff and not contributing anything—like a rug, or a chair—I would get grumpy.
Nothing was more liberating than getting my own place, which is important for any guy who wants to have his own life.
- Getting my own place was the 1st step toward finding a great girl to live with.monospaced

37, live with a roommate right now, but the girl and I are finding our own place April 1st. It is time to move on from the roommate situation and see how this relationship goes forward. The roommate was awesome while it lasted, 3 years, but it will be nice to not have anyone around so I can walk around naked as much as i want.

36 lived solo for 14 years in Brooklyn til now. Large house two housemates (both friends). They have their own lives but we cook meals together and share food.
Economical and nice to have some around just incase you choke on your food.
- admittedly it got lonely after 14 years. i had a small break w/ living with a partner in between.ohhhhhsnap
