Also: this whole "women get paid less than men" thing...
This implies that there is an active agenda to suppress women. The truth is that men get paid less than men as well, and it's really about a combination of A) Do you deserve it , and B) Did you ask for more.
I see a lot of B) not happening because women need to grow a pair.

This is the most embarrassing thread on QBN.

why does a gender imbalance have to be misogynism? maybe (graphic) design is just more appealing to males, on average, and other types of design may draw more female interest, on average.
Engineering is super male dominated. Not because women aren't smart enough or are locked out of it, but probably because smart women tend toward medicine or law or where ever their bliss is.
Like it or not, most girls grow up playing house, and most boys grow up playing war. It's instinctual and into plays into where our adult skills and interests lay.
- ..it plays into...monNom
- Read the first post. There are more girls in design school in general.fredddddd
- case in point: art-school. Maybe the female grads tend go on to be artists/ photographers/ illustrators/ etc.monNom
- it's learned. not instinctual.ohhhhhsnap

Historically, the arts have been male dominated. The ancients (Socrates, for example), poets and playwrights (Shakespeare?), illuminated manuscripts, choirs, painters and sculptors (Michaelangelo) all the way until recent history. At the height of mid-century advertising, women were fighting professionally (Mad Men). Not to say there haven't been unbelievably talented women representing arts through history, but they are far fewer, and for differing reasons than we are experiencing today. Are women less inclined toward the arts? I don't think so, but some do. Have cultures kept women from expressing themselves? Certainly.
Our "modern" world has broken down many of the barriers keeping women from many roles previously dominated by men, and that includes design. I find that there are tons of female designers, and it's a field that is open to all.
- historically, women have been oppressed.albums
- I mentioned that at the end of the first paragraph.monospaced
- there's a significant difference between oppression and kept from expressing themselves.albums
- women are still oppressed and you're guilty of it.albums
- case in point.

nice comments, cockheadalbums - That was a freakin' joke! Also, we're making the same damn point, I'm sorry. Replace "kept...from" with "oppressed."monospaced
- Meaning, "kept from expressing themselves" is part of that oppression. I thought you of all people would have understood that.monospaced
- 2% blacks. just saying.ohhhhhsnap

As someone who's been here since Newstoday, I think the board's simply become more "boyish" over the years. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's simply like that.

This sounds really sexist, but I'm speaking from personal experience...
When I was in design school, my program was also dominated by women. Most of these women were interested in "graphic arts," but had no previous passion for design, or any hands-on experience. They literally went to school to learn design programs. All of the guys in my program went on to enjoy pretty successful careers. I suspect that it's the difference between coming into the field with passion, and coming into the field solely for a career.
Think about how many of your friends/peers got into design because of some related field that led to their passion. Building websites for their Quake 1/2 clans. Building websites for their band. To me, the difference is doing it because it's what makes sense to you vs. learning to do it in school.
I only know TWO females that I've ever come across that knew they wanted to be designers before going to school for it.
- HS guidance counsellors are really bad or women just don't know what they want?newuser
- Or schools are really good at marketing to women?newuser

QBN is an interesting example, actually. This place is a remarkably hostile environment for women.

Or too busy having busy jobs?
