This sounds really sexist, but I'm speaking from personal experience...
When I was in design school, my program was also dominated by women. Most of these women were interested in "graphic arts," but had no previous passion for design, or any hands-on experience. They literally went to school to learn design programs. All of the guys in my program went on to enjoy pretty successful careers. I suspect that it's the difference between coming into the field with passion, and coming into the field solely for a career.
Think about how many of your friends/peers got into design because of some related field that led to their passion. Building websites for their Quake 1/2 clans. Building websites for their band. To me, the difference is doing it because it's what makes sense to you vs. learning to do it in school.
I only know TWO females that I've ever come across that knew they wanted to be designers before going to school for it.
- HS guidance counsellors are really bad or women just don't know what they want?newuser
- Or schools are really good at marketing to women?newuser
