Historically, the arts have been male dominated. The ancients (Socrates, for example), poets and playwrights (Shakespeare?), illuminated manuscripts, choirs, painters and sculptors (Michaelangelo) all the way until recent history. At the height of mid-century advertising, women were fighting professionally (Mad Men). Not to say there haven't been unbelievably talented women representing arts through history, but they are far fewer, and for differing reasons than we are experiencing today. Are women less inclined toward the arts? I don't think so, but some do. Have cultures kept women from expressing themselves? Certainly.

Our "modern" world has broken down many of the barriers keeping women from many roles previously dominated by men, and that includes design. I find that there are tons of female designers, and it's a field that is open to all.

    • That was a freakin' joke! Also, we're making the same damn point, I'm sorry. Replace "kept...from" with "oppressed."monospaced
    • Meaning, "kept from expressing themselves" is part of that oppression. I thought you of all people would have understood that.monospaced
