apple really don't seem to give a shit about detail these days.
the wife just bought herself a new ipad and so i've had to come to terms with the pos that is ios16.my main gripe today is that the error messages are misleading - trying to understand what apple mail's whines and complaints really referred to meant heading to the internet to see if others have had the same issue and then finding out what the real problem is. eg "please enter a password" when a password has been entered; or "mail can't be sent because sender does not exist".
then the ipad suddenly became "unavailable" for no apparent reason. on further research all the official advice is to wipe it and start again!!!! yay we've just spent ages adding in all her various accounts and passwords and now we're supposed to just nuke everything and start from scratch??? Because of course it hasn't yet had a chance to back up to icloud....
in their desperation to add useless "noo feechurs" and shitty bloatware that no-one really needs, these fuckers have totally forgotten the average users.
of course this applies to all techbros, not just apple, but back in the day apple used to be a little more clever and thoughtful.

- Wait what, you had no Idea new iPads come with iPadOS 16? lol Why would Apple boot them with old OS's?NBQ00
- lol yes i knew it came with 16, or at least a new ios of some sort. i've lost touch with whichever is the latest version. my phone uses 15 apparently.hans_glib

- Loved my Power Mac G4....this is when Apple was fun and actually worked properly.utopian
- This is when you had to his Save every few minutes because their machines crashed that often. How could you forget?monospaced
- 1997 right here I suppose. Yeah. Not really the good old days of apple reliability.monospaced
- Blue pill? Red pill?grafician
- I remember the "Smurf" G3 launched with buggy ATI drivers that locked up OS9 all-the-time. Was patched quickly, but Classic macOS never had protected memory.evilpeacock
- ... yet decades later I had regular GPU-driven kernel panics on my Big Sur Mac Pro for 6ish months before a patch was issued.evilpeacock

- At my first workplace as a GD operator I had a PowerMac then I was moved to a subsidiary to do webdesign and got an iMac, that is when I started to hate Apple.sted
- Macs were way less stable before OSX which is still a year or two away.CyBrainX
- Those were good times except for that mouse. Kensington Trackball ftw :-) CRT weighed a ton lol.Squiddy
- i still have my cube, and an old g4 kicking aroiund somewhere (the g4 tower doesn't work - i think the pram battery died. the cube works fine)hans_glib

- In this instance it’s the length. The cheapest Thunderbolt cable you’ll find from 3rd party low end is $20 and it’s for less than 1/3 length. Probably slow specmonospaced
- Absolutely nothing. GF worked at best buy and said cables are the most marked-up thing in the store. They cost like a dollar or two to make and sell for $10-150scarabin
- We’d buy them with her “at cost” discount and get them for practically nothingscarabin

m2 is a m1 but overclocked pretty much.

Do you use Stage Manager in MacOS Ventura?
I find it useful in iPadOS but not sure yet what to think about it on MacOS. Sometimes it's cool, sometimes it's annoying switching when I just want to overlap a finder window over Photoshop or something.
- I still use 10.14.6, the best and greatest osx before they made it all look like a giant iPhone osx.shapesalad
- Disagree. I like the latest UI since they updated it to flat design. Just makes sense. But that's a question of personal taste.NBQ00
- I’m slowing finding it helpful on iPad. Haven’t tried on macOS yetGnash

- TLDR so M2 is basically an overclocked chip, stick to your M1sgrafician
- eh graf, like I said it's not just the CPU % but other factors, like being able to have more ram, more (gpu) cores, etc.NBQ00
- but if you already have M1 it's not really necessary to upgrade. Better wait for M3 which will be on 3nmNBQ00

I must say that I would love to get my hands on a Mac Mini.
Even if it was one from 2018 that still cost around 700€ in second-hand stores.
Not the M1 though, I need ports!

Maxed-out Mac Pro loses 98% of its value with Apple Trade In after costing US$52,199 three years earlier
Apple’s ruthless Trade In service has come under the spotlight after a tech journalist discovered that a Mac Pro that cost US$52,199 three years earlier was given a current trade-in value of just US$970.
- So, don't trade it/anything in.ideaist

WHOA!ideaist - That's called an idiot fee for spending 50k on a mac...shapesalad
- That program isn't geared towards real market value. But I did once get $500 on 7yo water-cooled dual G5 b/c the cooler parts were in high demand.evilpeacock
- ...anyway it irks me when tech news explodes over stuff like this. Trade-in value would never be good with a program that is mostly targeted for recycling.evilpeacock

Played around with an Ipad Pro & pencil yesterday. Yup, that's probably the gold standard for digital illustration work. Very impressed.

- Mac mini gets the pro chip too, niceNBQ00
- Finally. The “Mac” I’ve been asking for. A mini case with the power of a pro machine.monospaced
- @monospaced; premise seems sweet, eh? We've been using an M1 mac as our "family" mac; small imprint and as power as it needs to be.ideaist
- ^ Sorry, M1 Mac Mini.
*thumbsup*ideaist - So the M2 is just 10-15-20% faster than M1 - not double the speed. Cute.grafician
- Did anyone expect double? Nope.monospaced
- Anyway. The M2 has been out awhile so no surprise :)monospaced
- Define "awhile" 'cuz these laptops are the first using the M2 Pro and Max
And yes, many people expected at least 50% up in performance vs. M1sgrafician - It's not just about percentages. On M1 you could only have 64gb ram in MBPs. Now you can up to 96gb. Also HMDI 2.1, etcNBQ00
- Love that they're using CHAI music in the opening.stoplying
- The M2 chip originally was a similar boost from M1. These are just the larger iterations of Pro and Max from the same lineup. Boost is as expected.monospaced

I've got the M1 Mac Mini and love it. It was an upgrade from a 2017 iMac.
I can get $390 in trade-in value for it. Primarily use it for Logic Pro and Lightroom, some PS work but nothing super intensive. Logic Pro performance is most important to me.
Make sense to upgrade given the trade in credit? I'd love to get a Studio but can't spend that kind of money. The Mini M2 Pro with 1TB would be about $1,100 after trade in.
- Wait for the M3s.
These new chips barely worth the upgrade.grafician - Or you can wait for the M4s. They’re gonna be much better!jmckinno
- I would only consider it if I felt like my current machine wasn’t up to the task.monospaced
- Wait for the M3s.

"Just tried pricing out our $52,199 Mac Pro's at the office for trade in, which you can still buy from Apple, $52,199.
What else has dropped 50x in value in 3 years.. besides crypto?"
