I use OSX every fucking day and when I switch to Windows 7 the thing looks modern. OSX is seriously stale and behind the technological curve (I guess that's courtesy of iOS.. Apple just doesn't give a shit and they have apologists among their cult members non-stop so they really don't care)

Nothing wrong with Windows 7 at all.. it's one lean mean OS and the most advanced one on the market now.. you get TRIM support for SSD drives, Blu-ray support, USB 3.0, true RAID support, diversity in hardware, everything is compatible, you get choice in components, you will be able to upgrade later whatever you want from it without needing to rebuy the whole computer (Apple way)..

Plus.. you can install OSX on it because the community is like holy shit big. It's a bit of a hassle but you can do it.

I was looking to upgrade my Mac Pro 8-core to the new one.. I have Mac Pro 3.1 (pre-Nehalem) and I wanted the newer 12 core one but the price is like $6500. for $6500 I want Steve Jobs to give me a blow job, seriously. OSX is ok, but people paying these prices today are fucking nuts.. That's what cult will do to your brain cells.

Don't worry.. you'll be fine.. you'll like Windows 7, you'll like the freedom, you'll like the tons of software and support and you'll even have money to get like sweet ass SSDs or take your girl to fine dinners instead of wasting it on a Mac premium that's really not worth it..

Have you ever wondered why Apple has the need to control everything and lock people into their eco-system.. it's not because of the "experience", it's so you can never leave that shit and have to keep buying and re-buying their shit.. but I guess people need to buy "status" so they pay the prices.

You'll be great.. I would just advise you to try and build your PC.. that way you can make a dual processor socket motherboard, and get insane power workstation and just slap one 6-core Xeon in there and then when you have money, and prices drop even more.. get another one and just slap it in there.. That's one of the nicest things with PC.. you get to expand it as you have money.. you don't have to slap everything at once.

    • ha dual hexacore what work u doing killer?
      ********
    • I wanted to kill my other PC and just have WIndows 7 on that Mac Pro, slap in two ATI 5870s so I can game as well and do 3d on it in addition to OSX stuff, but that didn't work out.Boz
    • OSX and iOS dev on it.. but that didn't work out.Boz
    • steve jobs..... blowjob..... hahahhaahah.fuqhu

If you're doing 3D and video 24/7 go fir the i5 2500k rather than the i5 2600k. It's not much worse at all and a fair bit cheaper.

Also you do realise the 'k' refers to the chip being unlocked for overclocking potential. So if you don't intend to overclock get the cheaper non 'k' version. But I would go with 'k' if I were you.

don't forget... Windows slows down after a bit... you have to reinstall windows every now and then, whereas macs don't have that problem.

It makes enough difference to actually kill the extra power you have after a year. My home laptop used to take about 7 mins to start up after a year (ok i had been installing loads of silly stuff and games etc) I just upgraded to Win 7, runs like a dream for now, but no idea if it has the same issue... most likely does.

but I still vote pc if you're spending yr own money

    • you have to clean Windows from time to time. I have no problem with that.benfal99
    • Vista was a pig. I had problems with my C: drive filling up with mysterious crap. No problems with XP and none with W7, so far.formed

    what kinda work you do?

That pc looks great, but the i5 2500k is better than all the i7's (bar about 2 benchmarks) and its cheaper.

    • really? I do print stuff mostly.benfal99
    • some motion graphicsbenfal99
    • unless you can really take advantage of the quad core, faster i5 dual core is the better chip for desktop.monNom

If you dont want to build it yourself look into a company that put together custom pcs for you, it will still be cheaper and you can choose what you want.

This is the type of spec you want for a mega high end machine, costing £940 -

You'd just need to up the RAM for your needs - BUT remember memory bandwidth channels.

    i7 920 / 930/ 950 - triple memory bandwidth (ie 3 ram sticks are best*)
i5 2500k - dual memory bandwidth (ie 2 ram sticks are best*)
i5 2600k - dual memory bandwidth (ie 2 ram sticks are best*)
    *for optimum performance.
its also known as 'DIMM', ie 8GB of ram 2 dimm = 8GB split across 2 slots = 2x4gb sticks.

8GB would be sufficient for even 3D and video editing.

It has a fantastic graphics card which you could cut out if you dont intend to do any gaming to save money too.

and throw in a SSD drive. WINNER.

I have to say my next new computer is going to be a PC and I have been using apple products for 15 years now. There just to expensive for what they are compered to a PC. Yes, OS X is better but I really don't give a shit anymore. I would rather save the extra £700 and take a bloody holiday. At the end of the day an Apple mac is a PC when the company started use Intel chips so I don't see the point in pay over the odds for OS X, and if I really want OS X I can Hack it onto the PC with no problem.

  • Hombre_Lobo0

    ^right on the money.

A holiday really puts it into perspective eh.

and lets not forget apples hideously arrogant advertising campaign when they got intel chips, saying how they have been useless and far from reaching their potential until apple got them.

I like Mac, but I am a geek. I like having a cheap pc in my basement to use as a bittorrent slave and to serve a outdoor webcam, a cheap old pc in my garage to stream music and have internet out there. I have a PS3 hooked to my TV that I use TVersity on to stream movies (doesn't work on Mac) from my server. There are just a million different things that can be done for little to no money. If I wanted to recreate this system using Apple it would cost me 12 grand.

As you mainly do print, there is no need for that 12 gig of ram.

I put together this £700 / $1,100 spec for ya, which be more than enough for print + a bit of motion -

It would actually do motion and 3d very well, its a beast.

It has a very decent graphics card, very capable of modern games.

If you wanted you could you could have 2x4gb of ram instead of the 2x2gb of ram for £70 more.

add £40 for another internal 1TB hard drive.

Saves you $900 on what you were going to get! Just find a local computer shop to put it together for like $50.

BOOM WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!! :D

    @benfal (your comment earlier)

yeh the i5 2500k is better than all the old generation i5 and i7's (bar about 2 benchmarks).

and in terms of how much better the i5 2600k is -

I never could afford a Mac, i would just build my PC...for 1/3 that price i can build a better machine. Plus its easier to upgrade if it gets outdated.
