Marketing has caught us all. You're not buying a Mac, you buy Mac. And you convince yourself that this is so much better than the other gang.

The Mac Pro uses server grade procs, ram and mobo. This is expensive no matter if you're on Mac or PC. (intel server mobo is like $1k). These components are spec'd for continuous use at high load like a server or render node. Really not necessary for a desktop unless you're consistently rendering AFX or Maya night and day.
The dell is probably going to be faster and better suited to the desktop. I wouldn't recommend an iMac. they cook hardrives (maybe bad thermal design?)

- it works?benfal99
- sounds like there's been a lot of success. i'll let you all know when i get done. next week probably.johnny_wobble
- i'm going budget build on it, gonna cost about $600 for i3 cpu, 4 gigs ram, 1 gig video card, 500 gig hd and other bits. using an old case.johnny_wobble

When you've got your super good PC, be sure to get a SSD too, oh and PCs even support TRIM which makes them last longer and perform better.
- kalkal0
Oh and on the topic of malware and trojans, get some common sense and stop going on dodgy websites.
And stop pirating.
I've had no antivirus for years and I'm not infected and have had no probs at all.
- so u think.ArmandoEstrada
- yea sure, I got a rootkit from that email that I installed a screensaver, and another one from my legal copy of assasin's creedkalkal

who gives a shit anyway...get what you want.
- kalkal0
It's garbage collection for your ssd, they tend to get messy and trim keeps them tidy. Not like defragmentation, more like... well, it's like trim!
Obviously you want the SSD in the first place for performance sake, it's the best upgrade I've ever had.

oh yes, defrag and all the other shit you going to have to do. enjoy you're new peecee.
- my sony pc lasted 1 year. my mac lasted 6 year untill the hd gave up.akrokdesign
- i would had to buy 6 people to last the same time as 1 mac. what the fuck. lol.akrokdesign
- hahahahah. i can't type. now.aaaaaaah. baack to werk.akrokdesign
- Ah so, statistically, this would be the case for 100% of peoplekalkal
- i ment 6 peecee. not people. lol.akrokdesign
- Having said that, I wouldn't buy sony. I wouldn't buy any brand really, self builds always work out much betterkalkal
- of-course not.akrokdesign
- well. if you going to compare. the mac is build already. like a dell, sony. etc.akrokdesign
- At least even a pre made PC can be repaired much more easily by yourself...kalkal
- i agree.akrokdesign
- kalkal0
actually, if he did get an ssd for his OS drive and he defragged it, he'd be wearing it out. Don't defrag an SSD!
For other data drives, defrag isn't important so it doesn't matter very much with such a config.

I do a lot of video work. My PC runs laps around Mac Pros
- kalkal0
I love them both but you seem to be interested in bang per buck so I'm recommending PC.
I've also had bad experiences with my macs and apple support before (albeit, by an authorised apple retailer rather than an actual apple store.)
- yeah, if you're on a budget. yep.akrokdesign
- but if you're on a budget you could also get out of box, etc. not new.akrokdesign
- No, unless you need server grade equipment, you can build a better spec PC than a Mac. This has already been said.kalkal

If I were wanting a decent work laptop on the other hand, I would always get a Mac. An iMac would be nice for general use, a MacPro would be good for bragging rights, but a PC for work.
