@dodecahedron
amd still make very good chips. They are currently a lot cheaper than the Intels too. Thier AMD phenom x6 range are very good, 6 cores! The phenom x6 1100t is the latest but the 1090t is better value and overclocks very well.
Great choice for users building on a budget.
They are also set to release a new range this year - buldozer range I believe.

thanks. I am definitely going to be looking into that amd 1090t. I was asking about the motherboard because I thought I heard the guy at the computer shop mention that some of the intel need a different board than the amd chips. meaning if you dish out a little extra for the intels then you inevitably have to spend more on the board. Does this sound right?

You need an AMD compatible board for an AMD processor, you need an Intel compatible board for an Intel processor.
And obviously, you need to get a board with the right socket for the processor you intend to get.
- It's easier for AMD though, just make sure you get an AM3 board. There's a whole bunch with Intel at the moment.kalkal
- AMD boards generally last longer because they don't change the type of socket as quickly as Intel.kalkal
- i just got the impression the intel compatible ones were more pricey leading to an over all price increase for intel systems********

I think it's fair to say intel motherboards cost more yeah dude, you'd be right to think so.
The CPU and mobo conpatibilty can be a right bitch. It's the 'socket' that's important.
Off the top of my head (so double check yourself) -
all intel i5 (not including the new gen 2500 / 2600) and the i7 860 are socket 1156
All intel i7 (not including i7 860) are socket 1366.The new generation -
i5 2500 / 2500k
and i5 2600 / 2600k
are socket 1155Kalkal seems to be a geek also!
Yeh I've heard amd try to change their sockets as little as possible to save the consumer money. Which is nice.I know that most current AMF chips are AM3 socket, but the next gen chips coming out soon require a AM3+ socket motherboard which you can buy now I think.
I'm tempted by an AMD system, just such a bargain and still very powerful.
People just get hungry for power on computers. I was doing 3D and heavy video editing on a 2gig ram (ddr2, current ram is ddr3 which is a lot better), dual core 2.33ghz laptop for my time at uni, up until sept. And it was sufficient, it was fine. Could have been faster but it was good enough.
Never forget with pcs the more you pay, the less you get. (for your money).

Iam not really into complicated tech specs.... I will go with Dell systems. Its easy to setup and and it will work fine, iam pretty sure.
- Go to a shop and customize one based on a good dell and compare.********
- If I used macs and dells my whole life I wouldn't know anything about computers either********
- if u go dell get refurbished same as svaing money on mac .$1150 what youre lookign at********
- there's an event right now at Dell Canada, 700$ cut on the final price.benfal99

Every Dell I've had to use has been a useless pile of shit. Cheap build, badly set up, and useless support. If you're going to get a PC, at least get a decently made one.

dig this site, not sure if it's been mentioned but you can customize and configure a pc with a ton of geeked out shit. These are aimed at gamers so the cases are kinda lame (no offense to gamers or anything) but the specs of this gear are top notch and the pricing is reasonable. http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/G…

thats well cheap. Thats excellent value for what you get. amazing, good link!Hombre_Lobo

I've a Dell at work that work super fine. I dont worry about them. And if I dont like Windows 7 and/or Dell... well, i will get back to Mac in 3 or 4 years. Not a problem.

BENFAL!!!
you should really consider 'whatthefunk's link. It appears to be a lot cheaper than the dell you're looking at and a better spec! (including a very good gfx card)
you dont need to worry about putting it together either. just remember -
i5 2500k
4/8GB or ram (your choice - id go for 8).And if you want to play games a gfx card like the nvidia 460, or ati 5850.
- Hombre_Lobo0
Benfal
On that site whatthefunk linked, you can get a very good set up for $988
i5 2500k (better than the dell)
8gb of ram (1333mhz - like dell)
standard crappy gfx card - ati 5450 (like the dell)
1 TB hard drive.
Liquid cooled CPU (better than the dell)THATS A GRAND CHEAPER!!
If you wanted to spend more for a more high end spec you could spend $1249 -
i5 2500k (better than the dell)
8gb ram (1600mhz) (better than the dell)
crappy gfx - ati 5450
80gb Solid State Drive (better than the dell)
1TB sata storage drive (better than the dell)
if you want a nice graphics card add $120.BARGAIN!!! Saving you $600-$800! :D
Do it!!

I just put together an AMD based system. Quad core phenom 2 3.4g, 8 gigs of ram. some sort of ATI graphics card I forget. It's on its way.
- thanks for the help by the way. I didn't get the 6 core one because I don't think any software even supports 6 cores********
