Not only is money NOT evil, but most of the advancements throughout human history are ultimately attributable to money itself. Advancement in technology, science, medicine, finance and media have all been accomplished by individuals who seek profit from their endeavors. Now while you might say that profit needn't always exist in the form of monetary gain, profit IS an absolute requirement and necessity for the human race to progress. It's a vital form of incentive, and as we all know, without incentive people will not put forth that extra effort needed for advancement in industry. This is why communism cannot be sustained. If every worker gets paid the same amount of money for any amount of work they perform, none of them will perform anything but the bare minimum required. It would go completely against the grain for human tendency and our self-oriented sense of being.
So... if money isn't suitable as a reward for hard work and ingenuity, then what is? If you come up with that alternative you will at least have a little bit of ground to stand on. Until then money will remain a fundamental, inalienable part of human life. Money is, has always been, and will always be the ultimate motivator.

Money is a yard stick.
We just need to make sure that other 'yard sticks' are available and that these alternative measures are given enough emphasis to make sure that we can all keep perspective.
If money is the only yard stick, the world situation is out of balance and it's difficult to ensure that 'good' things are able to happen often enough.

I think the idea that any alternative to capitalism "just doesn't work" is too simplistic. People always focus on the Soviet Union's collapse during the 80s, while ignoring the fact that for the previous half century the USSR was the second most powerful country in the world.
If communism is such a complete non-starter why were we competing so furiously with the Russians on technology fronts like landing on the moon? And even now, you've got the People's Republic of China set to eclipse the U.S. within the next decade under a system that allows some capitalism, but where central planning and state-controlled enterprise still goes on.
I think we've been a little brainwashed in the West the same way Russians were brainwashed in the days of Stalin. After all capitalism has experienced dramatic failures same as communism has. Does the 2008 collapse of the financial system disprove capitalism the same way the Soviet collapse "disproved" communism?
- Maybe it's time to evolve past both of them to a better systemukit
- Wouldn't you agree that incentive is required for advances in human innovation?********

of course capitalism is the truest representation of freedom and economic strength, nothing that communism could even compare. before trying to talk about getting past capitalism (which in its purest essence is just an extension of freedom), why not talk about things like currency and debt? These are important fundamental concepts to grasp in order to better understand the flaws in capitalism. Today western governments tend to support the negative trends in capitalism (b/c governments are mostly run by big capitalist players).. thus leading to a confusion in society that 'capitalism' or 'freedom' has failed.. we have emerged as a society from our ancestors bleeding for freedom.. this raw hunger for a better life, better things, smarter children, and happier days is an extension of capitalism. communism is a silly idea in which everyone is equal, which is just simply not true, which is why it fails. why should someone with no motivation or will to succeed be equal to someone like Bob Parsons? Your parents work hard to give you good things. It just works better that way and life constantly gets better not only b/c of economic strength, but because of all the great products that make our life easier. without capitalism, i don't know what society would be. its natural

"Today western governments tend to support the negative trends in capitalism (b/c governments are mostly run by big capitalist players).. thus leading to a confusion in society that 'capitalism' or 'freedom' has failed.."
Kind of a strange statement because this of course is the logical result of completely unregulated capitalism.
If today's capitalism doesn't work, where's the example you can point to that does? This is typical utopian thinking - the ideology has flaws everywhere I see it, but if only we did x, y and z...it would all be perfect.
But the fact is it's never been demonstrated the utopian ideal of a number of companies competing really holds in a capitalist system. Instead, more often than not a handful of companies eventually gain monopoly control and also control of the political process.
Factors contributing to this would be - lack of a progressive tax system, lack of social benefits, and no government intervention in the economy, all things libertarians argue against. Look no further than the fact that in American elections currently, the "libertarian"/Tea Party/ Republican side is being funded by anonymous billionaires.
- nicely said.. couldn't agree more..that's why capitalism fails.. it has to be constantly regulated and it's not.Boz

@biznutty.... if you were trying to sell capitalism, why are you trying to convince people that its anything but focused on greed? Do you actually think that intelligent children, happy moods, happy lives are products of money and capitalism, while watching today's wealthy kids of America becoming suicidal, drug abusing individuals seeking psychiatric help themselves?
- why would i try to sell something that already is? accept reality you fool.. nobody said life is perfect.. complain to god not mebliznutty

And give me a break with this crap about "freedom"...
What freedom? The freedom to theoretically become a billionaire in a system where yours chances of actually doing so are 0.00001%?:)
Does a kid growing up in the ghetto in a society with no public education, scholarships, libraries, or health care have more "freedom" because taxes for rich people are lower?
Using freedom as an excuse really isn't that different from Soviet Russia, where people were encouraged to ignore their actual reality so they could be contribute to this ideal of "equality." In both cases its a means for the ruling class to subjugate the rest of the population by waving a carrot in front their face.
- bliznutty0
ukit i still think you're a dumbass after all these years
you should have asked:"Does a kid growing up in the ghetto in a CAPITALIST society with no public education, scholarships, libraries, or health care have more "freedom" than one that doesn't?"
answer: HELL YES HE DOES
you all fucking complain too much just love your life and stop your fucking heart from bleeding so much
- ukit0
blitznuts I think you earned the "dumbass" award yourself by enthusiastically defending people like Alex Jones...
Oh wait aren't you the one who said the Swine Flu vaccine was going to kill us?
LOL
- bliznutty0
ukit - you stoop only as high as the shit right-wing fuckers you spend all day fighting against.. its LOW LEVEL crap alway coming out of you and your stupid shitty 'politics'
- ukit0
Oh give me a break you definitely did defend Alex Jones and the swine flu conspiracy crap. But whatever.
Anyway you sort of missed the point of my question.
The theoretical kid in my example is growing up with no schools or welfare BECAUSE he lives in an ultra-capitalist society. Isn't that what libertarianism demands, that we do away with all forms of government investment in society?
Libertarians would you to think "freedom" is defined as the ability for people not to be taxed or regulated in any way. But if the natural result of a system like that is to enrich a handful of people while the rest are impoverished, it seems like a strange definition of freedom to me.
- bliznutty0
ukit, i apologize for calling you a dumbass earlier, however again you are flat out wrong on this one - freedom is WAY broader of meaning than what you have defined..
Freedom of CHOICE is perhaps the most important natural, individual human trait that leads to a good life, a good 'me', and healthy relationships amongst all individual interactions within a free society, including all aspects of the market
i encourage you to watch the very good PBS series by Milton Friedman, called 'Free to Choose' (10 volumes), where he can explain the importance of free choice
