BTW, I was a PC user for a long time. I switched from PC to Mac as my main computer this summer (and still own two PCs).

My main PC running Vista after a couple years would crash, on cue, almost every night if I left it on too long. It would almost always slow down or lock up when I am running too many graphics programs at once.

My Mac on the other hand has not crashed a single time in a half year. Open several programs at once and it doesn't even flinch. So once you get beyond the Mac "hype," it's measurably better in that respect, and worth the extra $ I think.

    • ...and my experience is totally opposite. Who to believe????pr2

Hackintosh... best of both worlds! Cheaper hardware + mac OS + spend the extra on a couple of great monitors....

    • sure get a fake ipod too and a fake iphone and fake boobs and move to miamijoseprieto

I honestly don't know anybody that has gotten the newer iMac and have regretted it. I know some people like to bash Apple for their pricing, but in my opinion the iMac is a pretty good deal considering what you get.
If the hardware of an iMac suffices for your needs, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

I'm still in the install software fase on my new iMac. Loving the thing. And the new magic mouse is fuckin great.

I have 3 macs... and run Windows on all 3. Only 1 do I still have the Apple side through bootcamp. I mostly use it for music and movies.

The main reason I run Windows is the company I work at. It's all Windows, so it's just easier. I generally like Windows 7 a lot, and don't find a lot of stuff better on the Mac side exdept ripping movies.

In the end I don't think it really matters.... although if you buy a PC, reformat it right away since there is usually OEM crap-ware on it.

The one thing that does drive me crazy with Apple is lower resolution. Why can't they make it higher so I can fit more on my screen?

    • Good tip on the reformatting...hate the OEM stuffukit
    • Just get a MBP and a copy of Win7 and bootcamp. Done, best of borth worlds.jfletcher

get win7 and pc im in school using macs now they suck you wont get use to it or like it Win7 is NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • deathboy0

i say go for pc if u want bang for buck. i wouldnt do the whole pc on a mac route because all your doing is paying twice for hardware that is no better, and usually worse then the current standards. Just buy a refurb dell desktop with a newer i7 and six gigs of ddr3 for like 900 bucks, then hit the internets and get a modded win7 vista 64 build. Or hit up a site like newegg and custom build your pc to spec, then get a modded OS. And if you really still feel the need for a mac OS just setup a partition u can install it on in the future. But i cant see any need for two OS's. Either way you get the better hardware at a cheaper price and can choose either OS you want.

    • lies. mac hardware is usually the latest and greatest. mac pro = xeon, etc.ephix
    • yes i lie completely. maybe the dude will do his own research. doubt it since hes just asking for a public polldeathboy
    • what ever. you buy it today, it's already old tomorrow.akrokdesign
    • is that 1k bucks old tomorrow... inflation aside....deathboy
    • either way hardware is hardware, cheaper to pick what you want and run whatever os floats your boatdeathboy
    • there is one thing do, deathboy. there also PC's ex. alienware that cost allot too.akrokdesign
    • < your talking "build it" you self.akrokdesign
    • oh yea alienware was pc's hipster stuff. waste. owned by dell anyways. yea i think building your own is bestdeathboy
    • but refurbs are the best to go if u dont want to build one. for either mac or pcdeathboy
  • akrokdesign0

might depends on what you do. i am deep shit into design so i am a sucker for pretty things. there fore, i enjoy a product that not only works, it looks good too.

form and function. all in one. :-) go mac, don't got back. ( hah )

    • *correction*
      go mac, don't go back.
      akrokdesign
    • no "t" after go. ( thank you )akrokdesign
    • http://elnexus.com/%…deathboy
    • thats a sexy case. and the functionality of the inside is also quite incredible, especially the HD vibration dampenersdeathboy
    • dampeners.deathboy
    • pretty? nah. i don't think so.akrokdesign
    • None the less, the interface still looks like shit once it's turned onukit
    • think it was HP who made a tiny pc, which looks nice. let me see. if can find it.akrokdesign
    • well design and whast pretty is preference i find that case sexy sleek, and for function its brilliant. i hate the shiny light boxs, jsut want a clean sleek box
      deathboy
    • can't find it. it was shaped almost like a external HD. of course to small for the power we like to use. :-)akrokdesign
    • boxes like them clean and sleek for looks, and functional liek filters, easy access, that kind of stuffdeathboy
    • I don't really give a shit what the box looks like, although Macs generally look nicerukit
    • It just sits under my desk anywayukit
    • i keep mine on top of the desk. (showoff) hah.akrokdesign
  • akrokdesign0

i do feel that with a pc, you better know your shit. cause it might flake on you. meanwhile on mac i can just breeze along.

    • that is true. windows is dumming it down a lot more. why i prefer modded window builds. like teaching to the dumbest in the classdeathboy
    • dumbest in the class. if you know nodda about computers and you lack common sense looking at porn then go macdeathboy
  • ukit0

Think about how PCs are produced. One company builds the OS, a number of others the hardware, and many more much of the software you'll need to run basic functionality on your machine. No wonder with all those points in the supply chain you get errors and breakdowns.

Then in order to get the prices down the retailer bloats the system with shitty preloaded software that no one wants or needs. Oh sure, you can reformat your machine or install the OS from scratch, but for your average user, have fun watching the Norton Antivirus reminder pop up every single time you start the machine after your "free trial" runs out reminding you to either give them money or "remind me again in 24 hours." What a fucking joke.

Sure, Steve Jobs may be an obsessive compulsive dickrod, but at least with Apple you know they've kept up the quality control every step of the way.

    • true. if youre knowledgeable you dodge those problems. if your lazy and dont get it you spend double.deathboy
    • haha. yeah, i hated that norton stuff popping up. antivirus. internet security. etc.akrokdesign
    • kind aliek if you go in for an oil change and end up paying 300 bucks for wiper blades/fuel filter/oilchange.deathboy
    • just dont try to feign ignorance as something to be proud ofdeathboy
    • Yeah ultimately I just prefer the Apple UI...and performance seems better, more stableukit
    • That's what controlling the whole production process gets you I think, better qualityukit
    • and comparison is on what system/stats? On current standards i have always found pc to be better. Mac improved significantly with intel and now are very close, and performance deals with setupdeathboy
    • greatly with the intel and closed the gap. now perfornace is based on setup/hardware. I can setup pc to perform better for half the cost, thats me thoughdeathboy
    • half the cost and no sacrifices.deathboy
    • not exactly. gets u better quality, but more liek a union and as u see union dont get better results for the increased costsdeathboy
    • costs. competition is the best way to get better results. be interesting if they opened there os to work on all hardwaredeathboy
    • Dude it's not at all like a union LOL You gotta bring politics into everything?;)ukit
    • well im done with the apple/pc convo. think its time to play some borderlands dlcdeathboy
    • ha yea. and as union i was speaking economics not politics. closed systems innovation suffers usually and at higher costsdeathboy
    • Have fun, just don't let those popups and viruses throw you off too much son!ukit
    • higher costs.deathboy
    • Innovation suffers? Yeah, cos Apple hasn't innovated at all right? hmmm...iPod, iPhone...ukit
    • BTW, if you ever worked at MSFT you'd realize it's the most bloated, convoluted bureaucracy ever (I didn't work there but did some consulting on site for a month)ukit
    • some consulting on site for a month)ukit
    • my buddys not online... im saying all mac development is around a single set of hardware for new releases. when its released its 6 months behinddeathboy
    • released its already 6 months behind, where win is more dynamic and hardware/drivers are faster things.deathboy
    • ipod/iphone... think iphone is us not sure about ipod. i dont get the use of a smartphone, probably doesnt fit my lifestyle. but ill say theyre doing good with lots of app optionsdeathboy
    • but theyre doign good with app options by the advertising. wether theyre useful or not.deathboy
    • haha, cmon... most people would tell you both were pretty revolutionaryukit
    • Case in point, Microsoft's poor attempt at a rip off (Zune) - is that innovation? Your theory doesn't really hold.ukit
    • I try not to indulge in gratuitous Microsoft bashing since they prop up the local economy here, but let's face it, they couldn't innovate their way out of a paper bagukit
    • innovate their way out of a paper bagukit
  • chow0

    • P.S. don't use the Apple mouse though > Logitech;)ukit
    • < works as good as your site, dude.akrokdesign
    • meant for chow.akrokdesign
    • chow has a web site?chow
    • BTW chow is a hardcore Mac user, and owns several Logitech mice :)chow
    • +1 hahakrokdesign
  • akrokdesign0

    just the monitor...
dell UltraSharp 2709W 27-inch WideScreen Black Flat Panel Monitor. $929

compare that to the imac 27" 3.06Ghz. $1,699.00
which means the mac computer only cost $770.

    CHEAP! :-)

    • 770 is for the hardware (inside)akrokdesign
    • http://www.newegg.co…
      deathboy
    • i knwo my company got a few imacs all died within a year. one little hardware problem and its all hosed. dont know if its better nowdeathboy
    • its better nowdeathboy
    • okay so you can get it cheaper. oh la la.akrokdesign
    • thats the point hardware bought with more options is cheaper. by pc and then install whateva OS u wantdeathboy
    • It's the opposite, only with mac you can install whatever os you wantraf
  • omgitsacamera0

    <3

    • < that computer suck. lol.akrokdesign
    • yo, what's the button before the scroll. that looks like a bad place for it.akrokdesign
    • middle button. the scroll wheel when you push it either goes geared or full, so no middle clickomgitsacamera
    • Actually that's a great mouse, that's what I use (diff model though). Goes down to personal taste though, some people prefer wired.ukit
    • wired mice.ukit
    • yeah, tbh i l'm spoiled by the trackpad :Domgitsacamera
    • I have this mouse (among others). You can middle click using the magnifying glass button aft of the wheel.chow
    • I'd only recommend this mouse for users who use their fingertips to grasp the mouse; it's too small for those who like to "palm".chow
    • .. to "palm".chow
  • omgitsacamera0

    haha, okay.

Runs Aperture, PS and X-Plane like a beast.

The ONLY problem I've had with my Macs (I've owned 3) over the last 10 years is I just had to replace my hard drive in my 17 month old iMac. The Apple Store wanted to charge me $500; I said fuck it, bought a 1TB drive and minor tools for the job and accomplished it for $125 myself.

  • raf0

In this industry sooner or later you need a mac to do your job. At some point you get project files with mac fonts or a .fla file that doesn't want to open in Windows. If you do web dev you simply need a mac for browser testing on a regular basis. Rather than getting the mac as a second computer, get a mac for a single computer running both OSX/Win. It likely will be cheaper than getting one of each.

I didn't even like OSX when I got my first macbook. It was the only good looking laptop on the market back then and it gave me the option to run OSX as the second system. OSX Tiger didn't even have a half decent image browser and they sold it as the best choice for multimedia(!)
I thought it would be a perfect laptop for the upcoming Vista. I bought the macbook, installed Vista release candidate on it... it sucked so bad I erased it s few hours later and stayed with OSX ever since.

...fuck me: it is not the OS/hardware - it is what you do with what you have that matters. Don't choose style over substance: make your choice on what you can afford and go forward from there. There will always be two sides to this story (and god help us if Adobe ports everything over to Unix), so this discussion is pretty pointless. Talk to some people face-to-face and run (quickly) away from anybody blabbering fanboy nonsense - trust your instincts.

    • ...oh and if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Hardware is a "when" question not an "if"...DoktorDavid
