so finally found a new & sweet gig!
yes it happened...now is giving them no notice--usually 2 weeks, but at will in California--a big fuck you? or it can be understood?
Especially since my new employer wants me to start next week?
I kinda need a break...but dont want to leave in bad terms either...thoughts?

sounds like you put yourself in a corner.
talk to your boss, if he's a reasonable person he'll understand. if he won't leave and don't come back.

No notice is a pretty shit move on your part. I would definetely have a talk with your boss before you accept. You don't want to burn bridges. If the new place that you are going can't understand why you can't just up and leave your current position, then bad on them. That is of course assuming you told them that you currently hold a job at a different place.

giving no notice is pretty shitty but in life some shit just happens and you have to put on the gumboots and wade through it. if you have to start elsewhere then you have to. you'll look like a bit of a prick but it probably won't be the first or last time. just apologise as much as you can end exit with as much grace as possible. if it gets ugly just steal some stationary, shag the bosses wife and take a dump inside the office photocopier.

it's funny, people get fired everyday with no warning but employees are perceived as being disrespectful if they don't give notice.

i would have informed my new employer that I would like to give 2-3 weeks notice to my current workplace before leaving. If they won't accommodate, be careful.

Ask your new employer how they would feel if you gave no notice. It will alert them to the fact that you are a solid employee that can be counted on. This usually works for me. 2 weeks is the standard.
Should they need more than two weeks be prepared with an hourly consulting rate so that you can double down and earn some extra cash. Be generous to yourself when figuring said rate and responsibilities you will be undertaking as you will be really swamped.

alternatively you could email the boss a powerpoint slide show with a hand doing the finger and a giant 'I QUIT' written underneath.

The thing is..be nice to your employees, make them work hard but treat them right and they didn't...so I guess I'm gonna take advantage....

Hmmm, pretty nice advice here. In the country of Las Vegas, you give a two week notice and they basically tell you to pack your shit and leave now, so it's not uncommon for people to walk in and say "I got a new job ... laters."

2 weeks is standard. You're probably going to screw over a bunch of other people if you don't give any notice. If you're in an important position, where your leaving could harm the company, you should add at least another week for every year you've been there.
No notice could get you slapped with a 'wrongful resignation' lawsuit. It happens.
I'm sure you could require a 'consulting fee' in addition to your salary for a long notice period. It's up to you how you want to play it.

here is what the response I got...
"So we do need you to print the letter and sign it and I have to ask that you complete the 2 weeks as I will be really in trouble if you do not stay for that time period. "
Following this they are asking me to change my starting date at the new company.They used and abused people...so I gave 3 days, which I thought at this point was actually NICE of me.
My employment letter says at-will...thoughts?

They dont have contract here.
Employment in CA is at-will for both parties which basically mean that you dont have to give nay notice.
Some people respect it...apparently other dont!
My company is wildly known for treating their employees badly...so burning bridges??not sure really....
I was just not expecting anything like that...
