Obviously Obama is Carter. So Reagan is next. Then George Bush. Then Clinton. Then Dubya. It's all an endless loop from 1977 to 2008.
- I wouldn't say that, but Obama is on a short leash.********
- from whom?DrBombay
- if he sucks, he'll be surely voted out and that ain't gonna be easy from the look of it********
- so who is holding the leash, I don't get it.DrBombay
- Swing state voters, Independents, those that upset the balance more of less.********

Janne,
I see the Republican party taking one of two directions from this point. First would be to keep going with this identity they've formed over the past decade or so. Or to go back to the basics and reform the party identity back. Personally, I hope that they pick up on the success that the Ron Paul campaign had and use that as a rough outline of the future Republican party, but who knows. Paul had a really popular following among young voters which is something the Republican party has had a lot of problems with, obviously. Pauls message was appealing to a lot of Dems, mainly the blue dog democrats because of a fiscal responsibility as well as a hyper peaceful non interventionist foreign policy. And it was also appealing to traditional conservatives like myself. Unfortunately the current party has pandered to the religious right way too much imo, and they've dumbed down their message to appeal to people who eat up rhetoric and racism. If anything, this campaign has shown that intelligent discourse trumps the vacuous soundbite bs and for them to evolve they're going to need to move away from the Bush type politics. Bush won twice so I think they decided to rely on that base to win this one.
So really, who will run in 2012 depends on how this party decides to evolve. There are plenty of smart conservatives out there and it's a shame to me to see how the Republican party has distanced itself from it's core values. As a disenfranchised ex-Republican I'm actually kind of relived that they didn't win this. They might actually be able Apple+Z back to relevancy. But if they stick with the Palins of the world - it's going to be a bumpy road for conservatives.
- I'll agree with that, Bush was no conservative and has definitely f*cked the R's, hence Obama's win.********
- How is Bush not a conservative?Mimio
- Or should I say Cheney?Mimio
- Bush, a conservative? *cough, the guy spent more money than Richie Rich on crack.********
- So is Reagan not a conservative as well?Mimio
- You're off base, pal. We've had this conversation already, *yawn********

- Oi, man, I'm not digging, it was an arguement who the last true conservative president was. Reagan, etc.********

- Bush is no Conservative. Just look at how large gov is now, riddled with debt. That's everything that conservatismtommyo

They're going to stay with Palin. It's all a part of their cornball "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" bullshit culture.
- normal folks are better than smart people.DrBombay
- she will have 4 years of non-stop primping by the repubs to get her smarter in 2012.kona
- there's absolutely no way they'll put her up, although I could see her in lights for the R's.********
- there will be a campaign to further undermine her, starting tomorrow, I hopehallelujah
- why would you want to undermine her specifically, I'd be more worried about the dirt on Obama that'll soon come********
- McCain gave her the nod again last night though. She'll be integral to the party somehow.Mimio
- I think McCain's people will undermine herhallelujah
- It might happen, I mean look - the Dems did put that flaming idiot Pelosi in the limelight. :)tommyo
- I agree...I think the McCain camp is already throwing her under the bus with this wardrobe thing.tommyo
- give what the other hand takes awayhallelujah
- The already sort of anonymously bagged her a bit.Mimio
- Pelosi, approval rating sinking to the ground.********
- don't bite the hand that feeds********

Mimio I think it's WAY too early to make a statement like that. If you guys want to write the Republican party off as a bunch of idiots then go for it. I know the common perception here is to vilify them, and quite frankly they deserve it.
Personally, I hope they're going to take a long hard look at this election and see that it's time to evolve. Then they'll take stock of the people within the party and base the new image off the most innovative within. I doubt they're going to champion the Palin route, she had a quick popularity spike then a sharp drop. She didn't motivate the female vote and actually I think she alienated women a bit. I could see them try to bring Colin Powell back into the spotlight simply because he's super trustworthy and highly intelligent with tons of experience. But again, I think they'd be smart to take good year and evaluate where they're at.

Rahm Emanuel: Obama's Chief of Staff
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/20…Can't really say Obama hates Israel anymore since Emanuel's dad was born there.

Emanuel also fought in the IDF when he was younger. He's a good guy, from Chicago too.

see tommyo the problem is that the Ron Paul/ libertarian wing of the party is not all that big. The mainstream Republicans hate those guys. And then there are the social conservatives who want to shove their values down everyone's throat, which is the opposite of libertarianism. In pure numbers they are probably the biggest chunk of the Republican party.
- Right, tPAul doesn't do anything for the GOP base which is why Jesus will call on Palin again.Mimio

I saw a report that The Repub voters went down by 10% , did they not connect with Mc Cain that much , or did the opinion polls weigh them down?
- first election where moderate dems liked their candidatehallelujah
- tommyo0
ukit,
Yeah I doubt Ron Paul and libertarianism would be the new Republican model but I can see them taking a good look at why he was so wildly popular without any backing from the RNC and the media. When was the last conservative grassroots campaign you have seen that attracted democrats, young people as well as conservatives? I can't remember a single one.

"The personal, as everyone’s so fucking fond of saying, is political. So if some idiot politician, some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, take it personally. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here – it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft-. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide from under it with a wink and a grin. If you want justice, you will have to claw it from them. Make it personal. Do as much damage as you can. Get your message across. That way, you stand a better chance of being taken seriously next time. Of being considered dangerous. And make no mistake about this: being taken seriously, being considered dangerous marks the difference - the only difference in their eyes - between players and little people. Players they will make deals with. Little people they liquidate. And time and again they cream your liquidation, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that it’s just business, it’s politics, it’s the way of the world, it’s a tough life and that it’s nothing personal. Well, fuck them. Make it personal."

"In any agenda, political or otherwise, there is a cost to be borne. Always ask what it is, and who will be paying. If you don't, then the agenda-makers will pick up the perfume of your silence like swamp panthers on the scent of blood, and the next thing you know, the person expected to bear the cost will be you. And you may not have what it takes to pay."

"Face the facts. Then act on them. It's the only mantra I know, the only doctrine I have to offer you, and it's harder than you'd think, because I swear humans seem hardwired to do anything but. Face the facts. Don't pray, don't wish, don't buy into centuries-old dogma and dead rhetoric. Don't give in to your conditioning or your visions or your fucked-up sense of... whatever. FACE THE FACTS. THEN act."
