    Janne,

I see the Republican party taking one of two directions from this point. First would be to keep going with this identity they've formed over the past decade or so. Or to go back to the basics and reform the party identity back. Personally, I hope that they pick up on the success that the Ron Paul campaign had and use that as a rough outline of the future Republican party, but who knows. Paul had a really popular following among young voters which is something the Republican party has had a lot of problems with, obviously. Pauls message was appealing to a lot of Dems, mainly the blue dog democrats because of a fiscal responsibility as well as a hyper peaceful non interventionist foreign policy. And it was also appealing to traditional conservatives like myself. Unfortunately the current party has pandered to the religious right way too much imo, and they've dumbed down their message to appeal to people who eat up rhetoric and racism. If anything, this campaign has shown that intelligent discourse trumps the vacuous soundbite bs and for them to evolve they're going to need to move away from the Bush type politics. Bush won twice so I think they decided to rely on that base to win this one.

So really, who will run in 2012 depends on how this party decides to evolve. There are plenty of smart conservatives out there and it's a shame to me to see how the Republican party has distanced itself from it's core values. As a disenfranchised ex-Republican I'm actually kind of relived that they didn't win this. They might actually be able Apple+Z back to relevancy. But if they stick with the Palins of the world - it's going to be a bumpy road for conservatives.

    • I'll agree with that, Bush was no conservative and has definitely f*cked the R's, hence Obama's win.
