tommyo,
51% to 47% (2008)
That's pretty much why Obama will be under fire. Electorals aside. Let's see how much of an attack thread this during the next four years. I predict total, blind support with very little critique on BO and a lot of blame to GWB. *sigh
- to be fair, you're projections mean shit.lowimpakt
- hey join in the circle-jerking why don't ya.********
- And GWB doesn't deserve blame?TheBlueOne
- Sure he does, especially for the Obama win.********

"Showing extraordinary focus and quiet certainty, Mr. Obama swept away one political presumption after another to defeat first Hillary Clinton, who wanted to be president so badly that she lost her bearings, and then John McCain, who forsook his principles for a campaign built on anger and fear.
His triumph was decisive and sweeping, because he saw what is wrong with this country: the utter failure of government to protect its citizens. He offered a government that does not try to solve every problem but will do those things beyond the power of individual citizens: to regulate the economy fairly, keep the air clean and the food safe, ensure that the sick have access to health care, and educate children to compete in a globalized world."

Obama is eloquent, I'll admit that. But having said that, I still stand by what I said last time. All this hype about change will amount to crap. There's no way Obama (or any US president for that matter) can take on the real forces that control American foreign policy. There's no way that the US will suddenly dismantle all of its military bases around the world. Empire will remain empire - period. I look at all the people across the world jumping up in jubilation to 'welcome a new era' & I shake my head in despair. Will the human race ever wake up? I think not. As they say, "let the dead bury their fellow dead".
- I for one hope you are wrongRamanisky2
- You need only look as far as the current administration to see what one man can do in eight years.blaw
- Will the human race ever wake up? I thought the same thing when you guys elected Bush...Glitterati_Duane
- you are wrong. come on, go get laid and smile---

people are happy not because they think Obama will usher in some kind of massive revolution and suddenly withdraw US influence from around the world, most people wouldn't want him to - they are happy because someone of intelligence, a thinker, promises to recover lost diplomatic ground and address the issues around the world with a different tack which they believe will work better, despite the rhetoric from the hawks who have helped throw the world into its current state.
- kelpie0
we are also happy because if nothing else this 'empty symbol' of the worlds largest power symbolises positive aspects of our nature, rather than fearmongering, aggressive, selfish and ignorant aspects.
If people are believing in and responding to this symbol, to what this man says he represents, then that alone will make everybodys lives a bit better
- thank you, kelpie. it boggles my mind that some people don't get this._salisae_
- it's easy why people don't get it, they've heard the fluff before and don't trust it********
- mine too, hopefully he can get through to themkelpie
- you're even missing the point there jaz, and I'm not even trying to argue with you or make you the bad guykelpie
- no, I get your point, just referring to salisae's or however you type her 4th username question********
- its not really about trusting it though, its about responding to it and having someone inspirational to embody it at a very important timekelpie
- very important timekelpie
- what's different now from ten years ago or twenty to the people living then? don't overdramatize this********
- and I'm not trying to sh*t on your parade kelpie, but keep it realistic bro********
- dude, look around the world - unstable is a serious understatement. things need to be done differently now or we are all rather fucked brotherkelpie
- all rather fucked brotherkelpie

In my opinion, I don't care what party it is - if a party controls the White House and Congress, we're in for a spending spree. This will be no different.
- wait and watchhallelujah

What this guy says:
"America has deep, deep problems, but I would submit to you that this day gives me hope. Are we likely to see an Algerian as president of France? Or an Arab-Israeli as Prime Minister of Israel? Or an Indian PM of the UK? Or a German-born Turk as Chancellor? For once, the world simply cannot lecture America on its problems of race. And that, my fellow citizens feels good. We've done something right and good here. There is more to do, however, let us not forget that as we deservedly bask in this tremendous victory."
