I enjoy the gym but am relatively short (5'8") therefore don't want to turn out being a stumpy get!!

Try to finish the workout in less than 30 minutes. One of the actors is said to have finished it in 18 minutes. Then, when you get the hang of it you can modify the routine and customize it however you want while still sticking to the basics.

My workouts grew out of my love for jujitsu, which I started practicing to start losing weight my current regimine :
M - Run 45 minutes / Upper Body (Push) Lifting / 5 rounds on Heavy bag
T - Jujitsu / Karate
W- Run 45 Minutes / Legs & Arms / 5 Rounds Heavy Bag
Thurs - Jujitsu / Karate
Friday - Run 45 Minutes / Legs & Arms / 5 Rounds Heavy Bag
Saturday -Jujitsu / Karate
Sunday - RestI usually do this for about 3 weeks then take a few days off tpo prevent overtraining. A lot of times the jujitsu can be very slow if it's full of beginners but saturdays are pretty stressful so I make sure I take Sunday off.
My advice is to find a excercise you love...
The greatest thing I have gotten from excercise is that I am no longer depressed, I used to feel very "gray" in my head. Good Luck!

If you've been at it for a while, let me suggest a weeks schedule:
2 days on
1 day off (45-50 cardio)
2 days on
1 day off (45-50 min cardio)
1 day off (just rest)By "on" I mean hit the gym. Find a routine that suits you, stick to it but mix it up once in a while to prevent both your muscles getting used to it -and- boredom.
Try not resting more than a minute between sets. If you can, try something like resting for 30 breaths. Benefits from that: keeps your heart pumping at a good level - burns calories - less time in the gym.
Skipping ze beers though...that doesn't really work. Just try to limit it to once a week. Loosing the bottle in the drawer at work sucks.
For cardio I'd recommend doing it with a heart-rate monitor (rather than that ipod infested shoe). With it you'd probably get instructions (if you don't know already. just assuming here...) how to calculate a good bpm to keep your heart rate at. Good to stick too, so you're not running/biking too hard and burning the good stuff (and not the fat) during cardio. Biking is excellent for this, adjusting pace and all to fit your heart rate is so easy.
Works good for me. But it's all individual. Hopefully there's something for you to use in there.
Wait, isn't this a design forum?

i used to do something called doing the deck. you get a deck of cards and say red is sit ups and black is push ups you just turn over cards and do the value of the cards. so say a 9 of hearts is 9 sit ups. you can figure out what kind of value you want for face cards. 10 or 11... or whatever. it can be a lot harder than it sounds... try to only what a few secs between cards.
you probably wont be able to go through a whole deck your first time. especially if you're out of shape. i know i am

if you're going to work out, the best way to built strength is to do core exercises - sit ups and press-ups for example, rather than using just free weights, for large muscles use heavy weights with few reps, for defined muscles do lots of reps with lights weights or do a mixture of the two.

I quit drinking beer like a maniac 3 months ago and haven't lost any weight yet. I thought I would automatically. I think not drinking has made me want to eat more especially sugar at first.

I'm currently working on: http://www.coolrunning.com/engin…
Of course, I either need to learn to wake up at like 5:30 to get to the gym, or figure out how to schedule eating so I'm not half dead by the time I get home at night (if I don't go straight to the gym, I never make it).
- i did this too, works great! Have you downloaded the podcasts?woodyBatts
- No - didn't even notice they had them.StratusGD
- bad music, but it does help for motivation, search itunes, I now run a 5k every time i hit the treadmillwoodyBatts

There are lots of different routines and types of physical work you could be doing. I agree that doing something you enjoy helps immensely. As well, different body types react differently to different routines and combinations. Certainly always do some cardiovascular work, always some form of stretching, and certainly only helps to also do some resistance. On top of that, the type of work you do is up to you.
I too have studied martial arts for a long time, as its terrific for you in many ways, not only in respect to losing weight or building muscle. Coordination, speed, agility, focus, reflexes, etc... As well, I'm a runner by choice. In the gym, some rowing, core and resistance work.
but you should choose whatever works best for you and will keep you motivated.

i used to do jujitsu - it was great not only for fitness but for confidence as well, getting up in front of people twice a week and showing people what you've learned seemed awful at first but now it seems like a breeze
- Ha! We have to do that as well...it was so bad at first!woodyBatts
- I used to hate doing that in front of others. Unfortunately we never continued the program and I didn't get to be comfortable with it.Jaline
- comfortable with performing...Jaline

I hate running, but I don't mind the treadmill. I need to find better workouts for me. Especially once I graduate and won't have much school to attend.

There's a huge boulder out front. Every day I push it up this big hill. Every night it rolls back down.
I'm strong. But this is boring and pointless, you know?

As I've gotten older I've grown bored of the gym. Over the last few years I've taken to hiking and mountain biking. Now I'm at a crossroads... since I haven't been in the gym as much I've lost some muscle and gained a little fat and I'm not happy. I'm now full bore back in the gym and feeling great. And I will be full bore back into hiking and mtn biking when the weather warms up. Bottom line, there's no excuse not to work out at least 5 days a week. Personally I'm working out 7 days week right now and it's the best thing ever. Just get your ass out and get active.
