TheBlueOne. You said that they can't do the job.
How does that not make them incompetent ?

If you send a military to do a police mans job, are they an incompetent fighting force or really bad cops. You tell me.You stick a tennis player on a football field, and then when he doesn't perform do you say he's an incompetent tennis player? No, he just sucks at football...

If an army is poorly managed and badly guided then it is a bad army.

A good Army is like well-formed XML. To adapt, you need just change the CSS and everything will tick all nice like.
The UK Army is like XHTML Strict.
The US Army is like Web 2.0. It's all fucking mouth and nice logo.

I love how the rest of the world loves to trash our military. It's funny. Give Blue some credit for his honest assessment of our weaknesses though. He's not pulling the 'we'll kick everyone's ass' routine that some Americans blabber on about.
Sounds like everyone in this thread agrees that Iraq is a mess.

I disagree mrd. Thi sis a war - but not one designed for modern military. In modern military terms this is called a fourth generation conflict which is almost a throwback to medieval times and earlier - with tribes and other non-state actors as participants. Such types of warfare are messy and violent and ill-defined.The US military is a force designed to engage other armies of nations and defeat them - a job with which they are still unmatched. Occupying a pissant country with a violent population for a long stretch is exactly what they are not trained to do.

What exactly is the moderen american army designed for exactly?. Getting pumped like in black hawk down etc. etc. that execution of a plan sucked ass big time, can't we just say america has the strongest army but are a bit shit at using it properly ?.

Great question Chossy. Here is what the modern US military was designed for:A) Projection of force to at least two theaters of operation at the same time
B) Defeating a similarly armed force on an open field of battle and dominating them (i.e. Soviets, specifically ion a european land war)
C) Dominating oceans, airspace and communications.
The US military was in a transition period, with the idea of developing it into a Rapid Reaction force..these ideas never got fully played out (they take decades)...
The UK military is much better at the occupying thing than the US military is. They've had more success in Iraq than the US forces have.
All I'm saying is the US militaries training is top notch, our equipment is trhe best in the world, we have a volunteer force who believe in what they are doing. They've just been sent to hell on a totally fubar mission wioth no clear objectives. At the beginning of the war they had a clear objective (Go to Bagdad, blow up all Iraqi shit, cappture Saddam) in which they were like a machine. Now? What are they doing over there? Leadership gives them nothing other than: You are fighting for democracy. What the fuck does that mean? That's not a military mission, that's a political slogan.

And if you're interested in this stuff, here's a good read about what's going on in the world of war:

and why the US military as currently conceived and trained is in a shit outta luck moment.

Actually the best fighting force on the planet is prolly the CIA. They're like great Hollywod producers. They network with covert ops forces very well and wage illegal wars all over, and right under our noses. Like a great movie, you never know how it all came off. Top notch, those fellers.

===================watch out for moth's response given his love of all things wikipedia!
the thing that struck me about the cnn article in the original post was that at least 50,000 people have been killed so far in iraq in this war so far, and that's a conservative estimate. when did that number creep up so high?
good to be reminded of that.

-Take a team of the best designers in the world but give them a shitty manager and project manager and nothing ever gets done. Great designers capable of great work, but poor management ruins the company.
-Take any professional sports team and give them a shitty coach and a bad offensive play caller and they won't win a game.
To blame the mismanaged war in Iraq on the soldiers is just plain dumb. Too few were sent over to begin with, and no plan to end the war was ever put in place.
I would imagine the higher ups thought this war would be like Iraq circa 1992 and end in 3 days. Guerilla warfare takes guerilla tactics... not red tape and some asshat thousands of miles away behind a desk in Washington calling the shots.
No one can honestly sit here and say Iraq would be better off with Sadaam still in power. No one. We just needed a better plan of attack and fall-back to make it all come together.
