Great question Chossy. Here is what the modern US military was designed for:

    A) Projection of force to at least two theaters of operation at the same time

    B) Defeating a similarly armed force on an open field of battle and dominating them (i.e. Soviets, specifically ion a european land war)

    C) Dominating oceans, airspace and communications.

The US military was in a transition period, with the idea of developing it into a Rapid Reaction force..these ideas never got fully played out (they take decades)...

The UK military is much better at the occupying thing than the US military is. They've had more success in Iraq than the US forces have.

All I'm saying is the US militaries training is top notch, our equipment is trhe best in the world, we have a volunteer force who believe in what they are doing. They've just been sent to hell on a totally fubar mission wioth no clear objectives. At the beginning of the war they had a clear objective (Go to Bagdad, blow up all Iraqi shit, cappture Saddam) in which they were like a machine. Now? What are they doing over there? Leadership gives them nothing other than: You are fighting for democracy. What the fuck does that mean? That's not a military mission, that's a political slogan.
