I have 5 bikes, love riding them...here's my faves:
Santa Cruz Bullit: 7" front and rear do-it-all freeride bike
Redline Monocog singlespeed
67 Schwinn Sting Ray Fastback

all my injuries have nothing to do with the size of the tires or the number of gears or existence of brakes.

There was that time I was riding between two city buses that were slowly getting closer & closer together until they were pressing on my handlebars from either side, pulling me down the street. I took my hands off the bars to steady myself on the buses. One of them moved slightly faster, twisted my bars, and the bike fell out from underneath me. I landed smack-dab in the middle of the two buses. Not a scratch on me (but a mangled digital camera in my pocket). The front end of the bike was mangled.

years ago (this is not posturing) i put together a fixie at the bike shop where i worked. everything was perfect except i didn't have any clipless pedals at work and didn't want to buy another pair. i found some shitty old flats put 'em on to ride home. on the way home (i was taking it easy mind you) some idiot college girl pulled out of an alley without slowing down and *SMACK* im face first into the side of her jeep. To this day i swear that the only reason i didn't have to have my face reconstructed is that she was sporting a soft top. I literally felt the plastic strech around my face and then give some more when the rest of my body came flying. the driver of couse started freaking out and crying, i dusted myself off, and calmed her down. after making sure i was okay, we went our seperate ways. only to figure out 5 blocks away and once the adrenaline went away that my new frame was buckled at the head tube. FUCK!
moral of the story? i dunno.

my friend got into a similar situation - she was riding a bike down, this car pulls out from driveway and hits her.
THEN cops comes and tell her that the bike headlight wasn't *bright enough*.
like HUH? it has some standard on it has to be bright bright? (and it wasn't that dark). and come on, even if it was seriously bright, the car would have hit her anyway.
so the friend is stuck with serious medical $$

i was hit by an 18 wheeler/ rig trying to pass me on a tight right hand bend.. i was sandwiched up against the right curb (high one) until the rear set of wheels on the trailer hit me from behind. i was propelled fwd at mach speeds and did a full head-over-heels in the air while still clipped into the pedals... and landed safely on the sidewalk.
good times.
8 years later and the sound of a rig coming up from behind still creeps me out.

I am addicted!! One of the best things I've ever done in my life was get a bike.
I ride a vintage Peugeot road bike. If you are in the city and not planning on the mountains DEFINITELY get a road/track bike... and if your city is flat get a one speed or fixed gear- fixed gear is "hip" but one speeds are alot more relaxing.

I agree. I never recommend track bikes to new riders. They are more of a "you know when you should be on one" bike. If you are not sure, don't get one. Get a SS or hell go to the good will and get a $10 junker to make sure you really want to ride.

PS - I love bicycles more than almost anything. If I never drove a car again I wouldn't be that disappointed.

very into restoring old road bikes and track bikes lately.. actually the last 4 or 5 years.. i would have to say i am completely addicted.. I loose count of the amount that i have.. somewhere around 15 these days.. seem fall out of the sky and i have to buy them.. though i am strating to turn into a packrat.. gotten reallly into much older stuff.. 50-60's and before.. they have really comfy relaxed angles on them compared to modern bikes.. though i just set up a early 80's ritchey as a single speed that i ride nonstop..

nice loaf, got any pics? are you painting these bikes too?

I wish I had space to redo some old bikes here.
- skelly0
You don't need that much room, I work in the 5x8 space in between my couch and my desk.. haha. It's a bitch when the bike falls over though.

question.
so i live in sf and bikes get stolen all the time.
and now i have casati.
...i could remove stickers so it's less obvious that it's casati (bike freaks would still find it attractive tho) or not.
aside from regular locking tips, would you, if you were in my place, remove stickers?
