I would actually love to do a bike tour from canada into the US someday.
Maybe even haul as far south as mexico.
Maybe next year.

Sure, sure, s9... you MIGHT be able to take me on the track or in a derby. But in a long road race with some pretty good climbs... I'd drop you like a fly ;)

ooh yeah, Drag Race! I'm actually in that video somewhere. You can see my ass as everyone passes me. That race was freezing, & I had fingerless gloves.
The rest of his videos are at http://www.digave.com/videos/
And I'm ALL ABOUT an East Coast NT bike race! A bunch of my friends did a Boston to NYC race this summer: http://www.strangersracing.com/r…

Do you take less populated roads when traveling that far?

Let's have one. But where? NYC is pretty central to most of us.
But I vote Philly.
Because I'm lazy.

my Santa Cruz got me from one side of our fair isle, to the other...

I ride a really shitty mountain bike that I bought off of an old neighbour for 100 bucks. Don't know the name, only front brakes work (which can be very dangerous if you're not careful). I beat the hell out of it and I ride it everyday.
Sometimes like the wind.

3 day ride, from nyc to boston.
damn. i don't know if my butt can take it.

the R1 race was done on major roads (like Route 1) with alleycats in some cities (Providence, I think) in between. Some dudes were much skinnier by the time they got to New York.

I'd love to race in Philly. Never ridden in the city yet. And it's a bit less hectic than New York. NT ALLEYCAT PHILADELPHIA!!!

i don't think i'll last long with my mt bike. i need to change my tires at least to road tires. even then, i won't be able to compete with road bikes.
i know some people do that boston-nyc race on some really crappy bikes too.
- s_90
there was a team from LA and a team from NYC that did it entirely on their track bikes.

KEEP THE STICKERS!!!!!!!!!!
(and i don't use exclamation points lightly)take the bike with you. I keep my bike in my office, and in my apartment. If you have to lock it up outside (bar, grocery store?) put it in an obnoxiously visible place. hopefully that will detour the savages a little. also, i use one of those mini U's. it doesn't allow much room for breaking the lock, and it fits perfectly in nearly every back pocket i wear.

It depends where you live. i've seen bikes stolen on corners with no less than 30 people standing right there.
If you live in a major city you need at least 2 locks and covering up the stickers will help. Some even go so far as to fill the allen holes with wax or solder. Seats, seatposts, handlebars, etc, disappear all the time around here.
If it's not attached by some other means than a mere bolt, consider it gone.

yep, my handlebars & stem were stolen outside my office in midtown Manhattan just a few weeks ago. Friends recommended shoving a ball bearing in the bolt and sealing it with wax, but I find that shady.
I wish I could bring my bike into the building....

good points, i live in a pretty low-key city. but i wouldn't ride a casati anywhere in sf/la/chi/nyc/philly unless it lived under my ass. i'd get a beater and do everything you guys have discribed.
the lowset level of hell is reserved for bike theives.
