Quit smoking, 2 days for now ;)

But no motivation yet for exercise and biking.

Let's start little by little. HNY to you all, love and for God's sake, a bit of peace!

Do any of you use or visit Flickr anymore? I have had a pro account for years and years, but canceled it today because $9 a month to do absolutely nothing makes no sense. I have a ton of photos there and used to be really active in groups and such, but these days I feel like you can get way more engagement out of various FB photo groups for photography - Fuji specific groups for me.

    • stop using it. told them to delete my account. cuz they kept messing with the UI and things. i just dont enjoy using it anymore.pango

I start off every year with a two week intense calorie deficit diet, really REALLY reduced intake, no sugar / alcohol / processed food. It's brutal, but resets the metabolism and removes the additional holiday 'cuddliness'. I've been doing it for the last 10 years, and its always got me back in shape, and cleared my head & focus for the year ahead.

Its super hard to do it later in the year when I'm traveling for shoots etc, so i actually look forward to the first two weeks of January for this reason, hibernating and watching movies and basically not really eating. Bizarre pleasure and likely unhealthy, but its worked so far.

It also made me realize how much enjoyment I get out of food & drink. Most weekends are built around cooking great food, opening nice wine and making nice coffee – generally using that as an alternate creative outlet other than work.

This then brought me to another realisation that cooking and entertaining is my creative outlet outside work. I feel like I need to save my creative 'work' brain for my day job / earning money, so any side art projects, kids birthday invites or additional pursuits are not valuable unless I'm getting paid. It sounds callous but when i think of mates who are chefs, when they get home they're not whipping up a super fancy meal, they're being functional and efficient.

    And it's only day 2.

    • Are you saying that you're not going to be creative in the kitchen any longer? What's nice about cooking well is you experience your creativity immediately...canoe
    • ...and then it's over with. No baggage. And the learning curve is super long so it's not something you master straight away. I appreciate that.canoe
    • Favorite recipe that's intensive but automatic? Serious comfort food?garbage
    • @Canoe – i meant that outside work, any creative tasks connected to design / image making etc, I don't like to engage in, saving the energy for the day jobDaveO
    • @Canoe – the reasons you listed are exactly why i love cooking and hospitality! I worked as a bartender for a few years and love to make drinks for peopleDaveO
    • @garbage I've been making this serious duck ragu from the Robertas cookbook, takes ages, gone in seconds, fucking glorious with a BaroloDaveO
    • I think I found it, the pappardelle duck ragu?garbage
    • @garbage – YES!DaveO
    • Putting it in the file, will post when I ever get the guts to make it. Do you really use all the wine it calls for? Any suggested tweaks?garbage
    • Don't bother with the fresh pasta, its better if you use dried penne and toss it so its consistent. Chilli flakes are great but also worth having to top wiithDaveO

15 years ago I was awkward and depressed and started hanging out with this girl that I had been obsessed with and she reciprocated. Somehow I was afraid to get close and pushed her away, because I was depressed and lacked confidence. And then stopped talking to her despite her trying a few times to reconnect. And then I hated myself for it, but couldn't even get coffee with her for some unknown reason.

I ran into her randomly last year for the first time in 10 years and she's married now and we're different people, but I occasionally still wonder what would have happened and think about how bad at everything I was, when it was all right there and could have been great.

    • Hopefully you are in a good place now :)utopian

In bed. Past eve/night drank a ton of beers with friends. Proud of myself, cos despite it, did'nt smoke anything :)

But, today we have lamb to eat (what I love) and my stomach is destroyed...

In a side note; yesterday I met with my sister and my father to go for a long ride in March, I only have 3 months to regain the shape I've lost in the last 4 years. It's going to be hard, lol.

Went to my parent's house today partly to plan a trip in September but also to clean out some cupboards. My parents are re-painting my old room. I last painted it in high school.

Going through my old stuff (I collected so much random shit as a little kid) and deciding what to keep and what to throw was tough. But even more so was seeing all the old ideas, art pieces from school, old work from college and detritus from various chapters of my life.

As PonyBoy commented a few posts earlier, "Regrets will eat you alive", so I'm not going to dwell too much. But I had a strong sense of wasted potential and lost connections. So many wonderful people I met and lost contact with. Sadness about how innocent and stupid I was. It all had a physical effect on me. At one point I just had to look out the window and just breathe.

The planned trip itself is has an emotional element. It may be the last time my father goes back to his home country. I last went there with him decades ago, first time he had been back since he left.

Reflecting on my childhood and the years in between, I have noticed patterns of behaviour and thought that lead to feeling that I may have squandered or at least not made the most of the last 2 decades. And that I feel today I am at least aware of, if not actively working on. So good things ahead.

It was also good sense of perspective. I realised how focused I have become on business and money and it was a good point to let people and non-productive things into my life more.

It was a heavy, but good way to start the year. My New Years resolutions: 1. Take on less side-projects and finish what I start. 2. Spend more time with people.

    • this is great, I feel you_niko
    • People are overrated : )maikel

    • My biggest regrets in life are key moments when I chickened out and didn't do something, but I also wasted time on people to "be nice"bainbridge
    • Do less things you don't want to do, cuz you feel like you're "supposed to" and follow your heart and livebainbridge
    • Experiences > stuffbainbridge
    • Stuff all becomes trash at some point, even art. But make art with friends and have fun making itbainbridge
    • It can also be "lonely at the top", so "wasted potential" can be mehbainbridge
    • But be careful. The trend of pursuit of experiences does not necessarily break free from materialism but rather transforms it into a new form.palimpsest
    • In this trend surplus enjoyment is gained from the representation and recognition of experiences within a social context.palimpsest

Can anyone recommend a invoice system to setup a monthly subscription to clients?

  • imbecile2

QuickBooks: Well-known for small to medium businesses, offers recurring billing, and integrates with various payment gateways.

FreshBooks: Great for service-based businesses, offers customizable invoices, and has robust reporting features.

Zoho Invoice: Offers a comprehensive set of features including automated reminders, and is part of the larger suite of Zoho business applications.

Wave: A good free option for small businesses, with essential features for recurring billing and invoice management.

Stripe Billing: Ideal if you're already using Stripe for payments. It provides advanced billing options, including handling subscriptions.

Square Invoices: If you're already using Square for payment processing, their invoicing system is a seamless addition.

these are technically deck shoes. perfect for the lake / jet ski. they have been coming in handy with all the slushy snow. no fabric or laces to hold snow / moisture. (not much in the form of traction either)

Saw this mag in the newsagents this morning, I wondered just who this is targeted at, teenage girls obsessed with Last Of Us, middle aged ladies with a thing about Narcos?
