...after first review of making, as asked, the exact same layout as their competitor, they took it a step further,

    "Use the same colors."

    ftw

    • happy holidays graf, tnx for the dvcanoe
    • of course the client said it looks like the competitor. how can someone run an agency for over 10 years and still not understand basic brandingcanoe
    • So mister canoe we've established:
      - you know shit about fonts
      - you know shit about handling clients
      - you probably know shit about everything else
      grafician
    • actually gaffe, you recommended Neutraface when it was Josefin Sans and then threw a tantrum when you were wrong.canoe
    • actually I called you out for coming here beggin for help everytime

      canoe - the font begger!
      grafician
    • and for the record I UPVOTED YOU out of pity for having to deal with such bad clientsgrafician
    • It was the agency that was giving the poor direction... and believe me I brought up the issue of looking like the competition... but agencies are never wrong!canoe
    • Look, I don't have a problem asking other designers about a typeface. You've asked for help on QBN. What gives? What's the problem? Can you move on?canoe
    • For clarity, I've been here since 2002, canoe handle is 10 years old, since then 12% of my topics (20/165) have regarded typeface identification.canoe
    • Do those statistics match up to your posting standards? Anyways, I checked out your insta and I love how much fun you have with your work, makes me yearn for...canoe
    • ...the years my mind wasn't bogged down in the dynamics of handling commercial work, ya know, like this Mazda campaign I'm working on.canoe
    • Sometimes I wonder how I got this far without 'knowing shit about shit. Buy why question it? I landed a job at BBDO 20 years ago & still work on national brandscanoe
    • You understand irony? My point is, you don't know me, and you're not going to make me feel a certain way about myself by projecting your insecurities my way.canoe
    • Or whatever it is that compels you to keep harassing me and my worthiness as a designer.canoe
    • I just assumed you're taking a piss at us and our time when given this much experience you still don't know basic shit.grafician
    • Then again I know veteran CDs with awards that only know how to use Photoshop and nothing else...grafician
    • I'm sorry you feel that way, but your trolling and judgements land on deaf ears. You're better than this...canoe

    • NOPE some designers are just difficult to work with - take everything personally, and don't listen to the client or follow brand guidelines.Projectile

    A good client story...

One of my clients has me on what is essentially a retainer. It is a flat bi-weekly salary for me to work from home as I see fit. If works exceeds our mutual expectation, I simply charge more hours. I have had to do this once in the last seven months.

I manage two sites for them. One being built from the ground up only visible to our small team. Another being replaced by a site I am developing for them. I was hired for both before Covid-19, which has severely impacted their focus, yet I still get my check.

The best part of this story, is even while we sit and all do significantly less, occasionally I do get a request for something either front end or a mock up for later development. This all fits perfectly within our agreement. However, I then see an addition of hours to my check that I did not request. This has now happened numerous times.

Essentially, lately I kind of feel like I get paid for simply being employed by them, then they pay me additionally to do actual work.

Thank you very much, I can't wait to actually do some real development for your companies once things (hopefully) open back up.

    • forgot to add, paychecks are mailed. they show up sooner than i expect. i thought there was one next week, it showed up today w/ extra hours. hence the post.imbecile

we offended a potential client by having such a high cost on letterpress cards on cotton stock with 3 different color inks.

they showed up today with what they had done for a few dollars.

it had their logo, with a bevel, drop shadow, and gradient and a vistaprint logo on the back.

still not sure if they were gloating, or making some sort of apology.

    • that deserves a dumb stare, for suremonospaced

I'm a guy. A guy got my number off my site and called me wanting me to do some work for him.

I looked him up and he's a normal person.

But then he wanted to come over to my house for our first meeting.

And I felt weird insisting on a coffee shop.

Client's returned from a U.S. trip and is very excited about the internal 'playbooks' that apparently get corporate America all frothy.

C: Here's a sample chapter, can you put together a design direction for our shiny new playbook?

T: No problem. What form do you intend it to take? Printed piece? PDF? Video? Vajazzle?

C: Yes, any of those, or could be Wordpress. Just design the sample and we'll confirm later.

    • lolGuyFawkes
    • well.. to side with client, the expect probably 'book format' could be shoved in pdf/print/images in wordpress.shapesalad
    • w question here? make the video embed it on a landing page running in wp, print the invoice and attach it to an email,

"I really need to send out a newsletter to our members database today. We've only got a few days of the season left for this promotion."

Erm. Sure but I'm not available today and these things take time to produce. Do you have content ready that fits the template?

    "Great. Today would be good."

Sorry, I'm not available today. Do you have the content ready?

"Yes, it's a simple version it shouldn't take you long."

OK. If you send me the content today I might be able to take a look after 4pm. We should be able to send it out in the morning. I'm not available tomorrow afternoon.

    __

Content arrives 12:30pm the next day.

"Here it is, can you send it in the next hour?"

Sorry, I'm not available this afternoon and this will need testing before we send it.

"I really need it done today."

I can take a look this evening so it's ready to go in the morning when people are more likely to open it.

"OK, but today would be ideal."

So I update a template, add the mailing list and send a test later on that evening.

    __

10am. "Thanks for sorting that. Here are some changes."

10.40am. New test sent for approval. No reply yet. Not answering her phone. It's now 2pm.

Deliver $5k estimate to client. Client thinks everything looks good. Has question about $250.00 art budget (for stock photos, type, illustrations, etc). If I spend less than $250, will it come off the final invoice?

Client is dickering over a hypothetical portion of $250 on a $5k project.

Now I plan on spending $249 of the alloted $250, just so I can give the client $1 back.

    • I usually charge stock extra_niko
    • Do your clients feel surprised by that at all when you invoice?noneck
    • same as Niko, here. I'll estimate it so that the client has an idea, but I only charge for what I spend.Gnash

Sent out an annual invoice for website hosting, site management, and domain registration. Client wants to know if the site management fees are necessary (weekly offsite backups and WP updates for $4/week). Also, is there cheaper hosting available?

Send client long email explaining my fees, how and why I structure my services like this, and outlining possible avenues forward.

"Thanks for this explanation – I send similarly long emails to clients who have no idea about the law or what or why I do the things I do on their behalf – it’s a pain in the ass but necessary sometimes – as a know nothing client thanks for taking the time. We would like to renew the contract."

Client: our case studies are going to have 5 bullet points. We want it super simple.

Me: cool, that sounds perfect for real estate

Proceeds to send 30 case studies with 20 bullet points each with all them consisting of 4/5 of the bullet points being the worlds longest paragraphs.
