Today I have officially lost 50lbs since Christmas.
AMA
Few things to note.
-Zero weight loss drugs or any supplements.
-It’s 90% diet. Calories in calories out.
-Stopped drinking alcohol. (I’ve had a couple glasses of wine here and there at dinner & celebrations)
-Things I don’t eat regularly anymore: bread, tortillas, chips, rice, pasta, beans, fried foods, sugar, candy, granola, cereal, soda, ice cream, etc..
-Things I do eat: chicken, fish, turkey, avocado, salads, fruits, veggies, lots of eggs, butter, nuts (only as a topping), full fat yogurt, olive oil, sushi, soup.
-My food portions are the size that a petite woman would eat.
-No cheat days.
-I try not to snack at all. When I do, it’s pretty much the same things: Veggies dipped in Bitchin Sauce, large green olives, turkey slices, fruits, turkey jerky from Costco.
-Protein smoothies with fruit.
-I only drink water, coffee (w/half and half), tea, protein drinks and kombuchas. The above has been the diet I follow but of course I have broke some of these at times. If I’m going to do a big workout I try to sandwich it before and after with some carbs. This is important for energy and recovery. So I’ll do some rice or oatmeal usually.
Second part to this has been my exercise.
-Zero weight or strength training. The only reason I haven’t is because I want to reach my goal weight and then I will start lifting. If I started lifting now I would get super hungry and start eating more.
-My workouts are three to four times a week.
-Road Cycling: 20-40 miles per ride.
-Running: I’m up to 9 miles without stopping, averaging 11 mph.
-Swimming: Laps at my gym up to 1500 yards in an hour. Mostly freestyle and resting every two laps.Goal weight is 190ish. I am 49 years old and 5’9”. I was 270lbs around Christmas and I’m 220lbs today. Still got a bit to go!
Turn 50 in December and plan to do an Olympic Triathlon next year!

Congrats Hijo!!
Sure you miss "the beers out with friends" thing, if you're a sociable guy.
But it's impresive, you're on the way to a new man.
Hard to biking yo!
- Haven’t really been a social drinker for a while. Mostly miss beers when watching football at a sports bar.HijoDMaite
- Also my hazy IPA after long day at work. And having wine at dinner with my wife.HijoDMaite
- ^ Yeah!! Wine with my wife, the only I will never give up ;)OBBTKN

That is a serious constitution, my man. You should be very proud. How are your joints feeling now that you lost the weight and garbage calories?
I noticed once I switched up my diet to eliminate garbage, my liver function was much better and all the aches and pains were gone. My biggest tell were my skin and nails believe it or not.
- Joints are perfect. It’s sure easier to exercise now. Never had skin issues except I have noticed that my feet are less dry in the heels.HijoDMaite

That's basically the Whole30 diet.

I've been on the opposite journey but it's taken me longer. I've gained ~20kg (44 lbs) in 8 years.
I used to run 5-6 times a week up to ~70km (45 miles) per week. Tried to do strength training once a week.
I used to have a varied diet and drank occasionally, was only interested in nutrition from a theorical point of view, only applied it during running and recovery. What I changed:
I completely stopped running and started drinking daily. My diet hasn't changed much, it's mostly plant based. I haven't noticed any difficulties in slow paced activities like bike riding in the weekend or hikes on flat terrain. But if there's an incline I can feel the pressure. Basically, I can climb 3 sets of stairs before I start to feel my age.Just putting it out there to confirm the changes that matter.
- Keep it strong! If we were all slim and fit, the world would be very boring ;)OBBTKN
- But, hey! Watch your knees... Whenever I gained weight, they were the first thing I noticed was failing...OBBTKN
- The answer is kneepads.palimpsest

Great post Hijo and way to go on making the positive changes. But you're going on 9 mile runs with an average speed of 11mph? That's really fast - and impressive.
I've started adding collagen powder and turmeric to my post-run shakes to help the old joints.Keep it up, man!
- Haha I meant 11 minute miles! Not mphHijoDMaite
- lol! That's a BIG difference...stoplying
- That 11 mph made me to scared to comment as I'm fast BUT NOT that fast.

Excellent work!
"Calories in calories out."
THANK. YOU.
"Zero weight or strength training. The only reason I haven’t is because I want to reach my goal weight and then I will start lifting. If I started lifting now I would get super hungry and start eating more."
I totally get that, but ... the thing is that the more lean muscle mass you pack on, the easier — and faster — it is to lose fat, because of your hyper-firing metabolism, as well as positive hormonal changes. And it's also easier to stay lean (for the same reason) the more muscle mass you put on.
In any case, nicely done. 23 kg in 5 months is no joke. Your calorie deficit must have been bonkers.
- Only thing I would say is to re-introduce beans into your diet. Worth it for the protein and the fibre alone. And excellent for gut health, too.Continuity

- This was my thought as well. Sure, you'll eat more, but you'll need it.CyBrainX

- This. And kudos hijo!garbage
- Yeah I’m going to start sooner than anticipated. Especially because I need strong knees for running.HijoDMaite

I lost 25 lbs. over 3 months on the Pneumonia Diet.
- BusterBoy1
Well done mate...it's all about discipline.
Sadly I'm a major yoyo dieter...fluctuates with my mental health. Not great at the moment...have gone from 86kg to 95kg in about 3 months.
My weight bounces around from anywhere between 82kg and 97kg. Not great, but that's me unfortunately.

I am proud of you
