I see signs of people starting to challenging PC culture, and speak their minds again (reluctantly and cautiously, but never the less openly).

Do you see signs? Of so, how and where?

  • jagara1

And i realize, that I live in a Scandinavian country (Denmark), and that my culture may be very different than yours.

  • mort_3

It’s a constant pendulum. E.g. Trans rights, then wokeness that takes things too far and actually does trans people a disservice, then a reaction to the wokeness, and a counter reaction, etc, etc. It will normalise eventually.

    • Let's hope.jagara
    • I'd like to believe all these things are just processes of identity - confirming we are who we think we are. Virtue signalling our way to happiness!Ianbolton
    • It seems to be more counter productive at the moment.Chimp

    we're running low on labels.

  • palimpsest2

Y'all had grunge, let them have wokeness.

I feel the pronouns in the workplace is absurd. I identify has an employee. That is all my colleagues need to know about my lifestyle.

I find it hard to believe gays / alt lifestyle peeps take this stuff serious.

Seems odd that they drink this kool aid since it's not counter culture.

To solve the problems in sports. Just have a human open. 100% women will be winning/competing at a high level in most sports in 20 years.

Women sports suppress them more and create a male controlled environment that opens them up for sexual abuse.

The women's skateboarding in the olympics was a great example. They didn't have to rely on anyone or institute to skate.

Keep the rainbow flag and parade and drop all the nonsense.

That said, I live in a small hick town, and someone started a rumour that i was Bi sexual. A friends wife keeps asking: you're bi sexual right? Like it's some big thing. I'm like are you 12? I just say ya...I have sex bi myself.

    • Bisexual, have sex by myself, Lol. Why I never heard that before.shapesalad
  • drgs3

    I accept all pronouns

    • I accept PayPalmort_
    • I accept MacBook Pronouns. My dad jokes are getting worse.Chimp
  • mort_3

A friend’s kid (13) in school has a teacher who was adamant that the sex of a person is non binary. When the kid asked if they meant gender rather than sex, she was immediately shut down with no room for discussion, which resulted in being alienated by some of the other kids in her class.

I think this lack of willingness of teachers to approach the subject openly is from the fear of offending anyone or saying the wrong thing - brought on by woke groups with pages of guidelines on how to speak and behave. It’s awful. At least create an environment with room for discussion and education around it.

    • 100% on education and discussion. I feel the blue collar hicks are more open to discussion.rootlock
    • It’s ironic how intolerant the woke have become.Chimp
    • Yeah, partly out of fear of being intolerant LOL. But also it’s an opportunity to belong to a tribe and be collectively offended.mort_

^ the effect is every bit as repressive as the Catholic School marm with her yard-stick rapping knuckles for questioning the orthodoxy.

  • fadein11-2

we already have a signs you're getting old thread.

    • Worrying about free speech is getting old?jagara
    • what is it you want to say you feel you are not allowed to? genuinely interested.fadein11
    • My problem is more with political correctness as a tool for social change. I think it is massively flawed.jagara
    • Not allowing certain opinions to be heard will not remove problematic issues like racism, phobias etc, it will simply displace them underground to fester...jagara
    • what is your definition of political correctness?fadein11
    • ... and eventually rear their ugly heads later on, in a stronger form.jagara
    • Free and open speech is a sign of a healthy democracy. Allowing people you don't like to say things that you don't like should be obvious.jagara
    • In in that regard, democracy has a serious problem these days.jagara
    • And if certain speech gets outright illegal, will it stop there? I don't want to use ethnic slurs or shame people. In fact, I think no one should.jagara
    • But do I think it should be legal? Absolutely.jagara
    • By ethnic slurs and shaming do you mean hate speech or just banter?fadein11
    • ^ the issue is, what defines 'hate speech'. If I define it, I can control what you can say.monNom
    • Terms being redefined or expanded in their meaning will interact with laws that were written in the past considering different definitions of those words.monNom
    • banter isn't acceptable either though, sigh. Where's that sarcasm emoji. It's very different from a UK perspective, most of our media leans the other way.fadein11
    • Political correctness outrage is only used for clicks over here. We have a very right leaning govt who partly got elected on culture war BS.fadein11
    • Making words='violence' can make expressing an opinion a 'violent' act. And we have laws especially for violent crime because it is considered especially bad.monNom
    • Funny think is the UK had its big culture war in the 80's so I don't think it has the same impact as N.America and other parts of the world.fadein11
    • We've had "Muslims have cancelled *INSERT HOLIDAY*" for 20ish years. I'm fascinated when people claim their freedom of speech has been curtailed. Examples plsfadein11
    • NA did in the 80s and early 90s. This new push probably started around 2010. Something about the left's changing demographics maybe?monNom
    • @fadein11 thanks for being genuinely interested btw. That way you learned what my perspective is :)jagara
    • Wether or not you agree with what the truckers did in Canada it was wrong to block bank their accounts and their donors. That was a Chinese style move.Chimp
    • It's funny how the "open minded" woke became the most closed minded people.Chimp
    • ^ precisely. Label working-class protestors terrorists, then use anti-terrorism laws to break up their protest.monNom
    • who are these 'woke' people ruining your lives! I want to meet one, I'll put him, her them over my knee I tell theefadein11
    • The Canadian government banning protests and blocking bank accounts.Chimp
    • that's a govt overstepping the line but wtf has it got to do with political correctness?fadein11
    • "white privilege", suggesting white pupils are at an advantage, is the "opposite" of the reality for poor white
      https://www.bbc.com/…
      Chimp
    • you're a Brit living in Spain yeah?fadein11
    • No one in poverty has an advantage, this is pretty basic stuff. who has let those kids down, dn't get your point.fadein11
    • @fade11 That government uses the language of PC as a cynical cudgel. Rural, working class are labelled racists, misogynists, etc. thus not deserving a voice.monNom
    • I have noticed how bad the culture war in Canada has got, Peterson etc, rode the wave. It's not quite the same here. So I prob shouldn't comment.fadein11
    • Like I said we had brutal cancel culture in the 80's when a whole generation of prime time entertainers went back to the working mans clubs infadein11
    • a year or twofadein11
    • Also, the default for most of the UK is slightly racist (above a certain age). They elect the govts.fadein11
    • I wonder how much PC culture and not listening to the working class played in Brexit.Chimp
    • It's not that there's a "culture war" in Canada. We have a cohesive, multi-ethnic society, even in rural parts. The PC stuff is all divide and conquer for powermonNom
    • this idea of cancel culture is nonsense in the UK. Many Brexit voters read The Sun and the Daily Mail for years, those papers were exercising their freefadein11
    • speech and rightly so. The swarm of immigrants was a major threat to our fine Isle. Thank heavens we stopped it.fadein11
    • When newspapers like the Mail and Sun start talking about cancel culture I always chuckle. It's like they never had a platform to speak to.fadein11
    • The News of the World got cancelled and as if by magic it rose again as the Sun on Sunday. I feel sorry for all these voices being silenced on this fair Islefadein11
    • Likely, as in Canada, you need that "swarm of immigrants" as tax-payers funding your services into old age. I wouldn't look down my nose at them.monNom
    • I know plenty of left working class who read the Mirror who voted for Brexit. I don't think it's wrong to question the high numbers of immigrants.Chimp
    • There should have been a sensible debate on immigration rather than calling anyone a racist who would like a slightly lower level.Chimp
    • @nom yep it's 100% divide and conquer. always has been. It's mainly about inventing a threat/enemy that doesn't actually exist.fadein11
    • Can you now see how this woke culture played a part in Brexit?Chimp
    • it still amazes me how a few very bright people here lose their shit over it.fadein11
    • @fade It does polarise people.Chimp
    • we have higher numbers of immigrants post Brexit. We never had a swarm of immigrants, we took about 30,000 Syrians, Germany took nearly a million.fadein11
    • Immigration is not a drain on resources.fadein11
    • You're right. They never wanted to stop mass immigration, that was just the trick to get the votes. Perhaps the country needs it as the birth rate is so low.Chimp
    • it's meant to.monNom
    • There were sensible debates but Farage and co or Cummings were just far better at communicating the message, along with the millions of social media postsfadein11
    • (polarize, that is)monNom
    • what's incredible is how a few ageing back bench tories actually steered it, it took them a long time but they got there in the end.fadein11
    • Even Le Pen said it's better to be inside the EU than out. Incredible how childish some of these huge decisions actually are.fadein11
    • I'm not sure who was steering it, that shit goes deep. But let's leave that for conspiracy of the day.Chimp
    • The euro sceptics had been a thorn in the side of the tory party for decades, obsessed with the evil of it allfadein11
    • The only true point they had was the sovereignty issue. Wether you like it or not the plan is to have a federal Europe.Chimp
    • such an incredibly successful project, they managed to convince those most reliant on the EU that everything would be better/okfadein11
    • As a Europhile, I would rather the UK be in the EU and help reform it.Chimp
    • as 10's of billions left the city of London, they talked about our fish. lol. I'm over it but drunk. Goodnight.fadein11
    • Buenas noches :)Chimp
    • same, i never understood the strategy of leaving, get some good MEP's in there, not showboaters like Farage. Remain and reform,fadein11
    • Sovereignty though, what does that even mean?fadein11
    • Monetary sovereignty is one way to look at it.Chimp
    • The sovereignty issue seemed to me that laws were emanating from brussels, and you had to comply. Immigration policy was one, but there as an enviro law too IRCmonNom
    • we had that, we got to keep £££.
we had the most flexible deal in Europe.
      fadein11

I think in Denmark it did not take root to begin with, it was immediately labeled "offence culture" (krenkelseskultur?)

    Maybe in Sweden? Fuck em

    • Krænkelseskultur, yes. It's taken some root, but Sweden is definitely the leaders in this regard.jagara
  • CyBrainX1

More often than not, when I hear people talk about PC what they're really talking about is non-racism. These people are more upset about silly gender charts than white supremacy.

  • Chimp5

One thing I read was that it was all a distraction to stop us rebelling against the real problems in the world, like massive corporations. Divide and conquer.

  • jagara2

Excessive political correctness has served as an incredibly effective recruitment tool for the far right in recent years. This has been the monumental failing of the left. The insistence of being right over being effective.

    • The left i always considered myself a part of.jagara
    • It's almost as if the left can't see their mistakes and are incapable of learning from them.Chimp
    • will be work out in the longterm of course.. righ wingers - convervatives...are falling exuberant in europe... australia signed up too..neverscared
    • i´d rather say the right can´t learn ...seeing the results and how the imploded...neverscared
    • The left helped create the new right. It will keep on swinging from one extreme to another until we learn to see what we have in common.Chimp
  • jagara3

But we already have a PC of the day thread. My original question was: do you see signs of the the beginning of an end to PC culture? If yes, where and how?

    • again, define PC culture?fadein11
    • I feel more people are questioning the nonsense.Chimp
    • PC or Woke culture has zero effect on my day to day life. Clearly there are morons on every extreme end of the spectrum who are amplified by the media andfadein11
    • social media. The vast majority of people aren't stressed by the BS designed to generate clicks and make people angryfadein11
    • I remember applying for a job where they said that non-white people where especially welcome. I suppose I wasn't as welcome because of my skin colour.Chimp
    • you should've blacked upfadein11
    • As far as I knew welcoming someone more based on their skin colour was racist, but hey...Chimp
    • Perhaps it was my photo with the Charlie Chaplin style moustache and the brown shirt with the red armband that put them off.Chimp
    • lolfadein11
    • a company stating that they encourage applications from ethnic groups that are massively under-represented doesn't mean you can't apply or won't get the jobFax_Benson
    • It just means they are racist. Discriminating against people based on skin colour is the definition of racism.Chimp
    • It’s ironic how racist are some of the woke mob.Chimp
  • babydick_4

    Fuck that woke shit

  • mort_4

I have a distant acquaintance who’s teenage kid has started some kind of physical transition with hormones etc. And changed their name, school, clothing and all.

I was kind of shocked that someone could be allowed to make life changing decisions like this durning those emotionally confusing teenage years.

I do know it wasn’t an overnight decision and it has been life changing in a positive way for them. So all’s well that ends well. I wonder does it always turn out to be the right decision at that age.

    • how old? imagine being the child's parents, I'd really struggle with that decision regardless of what they wanted.fadein11
    • you can only assume this was the best option for them as a family. Jeez hardly an easy life moving forward is it.fadein11
    • They were around 13 / 14. Yep, parents must have really gone through it.mort_
    • And the I believe the kid was depressed for a long time leading up to it. Counselling involved. Not decided on a whim.mort_

    • That was great!mort_
    • I think we're all a little gayFNP14
    • He speaks so much sense. I think that’s what triggered the woke mob.Chimp

Seems like this thread is leaning heavy on gender identity.

I've been wondering about the increase in it too. Too many corny-types on linkedin listing their pronouns and plenty of people listing "she/they" or "he/they" if they feel remotely something not cis.

It's nice we're more accepting of our fellow humans but it seems a bit ridiculous when 98% of people felt comfortable with binary 50 years ago.

We should be supportive of those other 2% but not everyone a different thing.

    • I think it’s part being supportive and trying to help normalise it... and part fad.mort_
    • It’s the latest thing to be outraged against.Chimp
