Finally going for my first vacation since six years in april. Really don´t want to mess this up. Any must-see´s regarding the coast, San Francisco or LA? I think I´m not especially looking into the main touristic postcard-like attractions. Maybe more nice little inspirational places. Since we don´t really know people living there, would appreciate some hints where to go and/or have an affordable stay.
Freezing my ass off right here in Berlin. Man, gotta get outta her!
Cheers from frosty Germany

LA is better weather. SF has Napa and you won't need a car as much.

San Clemente is this really great, sleepy, surf town. Very calming and very beautiful.

If you ever make it to SD, we have a lot of qbneers here, maybe we can round up the troops and go grab a beer!

fly into LA or SF (depending on which is cheaper), rent a car and drive up (or down the coast). search this site for thread specific to each area you will be in (there are at least a handful of them on both LA and SF).
will post some later when i am back at the laptop if you can't find them.

HIt up Newport Beach and head south on PCH, if you're gonna head down to SD. You will hit up Newport, Corona Del Mar, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and San Clemente... all pretty sweet places to sight see and see the beauty of the OC. Good luck!
- Thanx, we´ll hit that. Also heard about San Clemente. Must be a winner!RGBurn

Why not LA to SF?
Solvang and specially Camel by the Sea are small places, and not so touristic.- hahah solvang is similar to my german restaurant joke!Miguex
- haha I stopped by when I was driving from LA > SF, unbelievable that's in California.chrisRG
- Solvang? ;-))) Man, just looked it up! Pissed my pants a second time!!! Is that some sort of joke?RGBurn
- Solvang is also very close to Neverland Ranch, if that interests you.arthur
- Must be abandoned meanwhile?RGBurn

If you want picturesque beaches just plan for sure to hit the spots from Huntington Beach and South. Before you get to San Diego make sure you visit Laguna Beach there are a few gems there. In laguna look for these names: Main Beach, Thalia Street, Shaw's Cove, Table Rock, and 1000 Steps. Trust me you won't be disappointed.

You mentioned a different way back up (not the coastal route).. driving along the Eastern Sierras is pretty phenomenal. The mountains there are a lot different than the Alps, very craggy and dramatic. Then you can cut back over to the Bay Area through Yosemite. There's a gas station in a place called Lee Vining that has a restaurant in it called Whoa Nellie Deli with pretty fancy food.
- Yes. Curious about the landscape and mountain areas, since I´m only used to the alps. I think we´ll save 5-6 days for our route back to SF, making sure we don´t miss those sweet spots. Did you stay at motels in that area?RGBurn

- We mostly camped, but I stayed in a small hotel in Lone Pine before. It's along the 395. Pretty standard fare.mathinc

If in LA, go to Venice/Santa Monica and Montecito, with some dabbling in Hollywood. If SF, go to SF, Sausalito, Montery/Carmel and maybe Santa Cruz.

Santa BarbaraOnly a day or 2 in LA.
Forget SD and go to Joshua Tree instead. Have dinner at Pappy & Harriet's Roadhouse in Pioneertown. Won't regret it.If you have time, Vegas for a day or 2, you're so close anyway. Extra time? Grand Canyon.
Go up through Death Valley (ghost towns!) or head over towards Yosemite. Back to SF.
