    Near SF:
    Muir Woods
    Golden Gate
    Marin Headlands
    Napa/Sonoma Valleys
    Kayak to Angel Island
    Alcatraz (touristy, but audio tour is cool)

    Down Hwy1:
    Monterey Aquarium
    Carmel
    Hearst Castle
    Santa Barbara

    Only a day or 2 in LA.
    Forget SD and go to Joshua Tree instead. Have dinner at Pappy & Harriet's Roadhouse in Pioneertown. Won't regret it.

    If you have time, Vegas for a day or 2, you're so close anyway. Extra time? Grand Canyon.

    Go up through Death Valley (ghost towns!) or head over towards Yosemite. Back to SF.
