    You mentioned a different way back up (not the coastal route).. driving along the Eastern Sierras is pretty phenomenal. The mountains there are a lot different than the Alps, very craggy and dramatic. Then you can cut back over to the Bay Area through Yosemite. There's a gas station in a place called Lee Vining that has a restaurant in it called Whoa Nellie Deli with pretty fancy food.

    • We mostly camped, but I stayed in a small hotel in Lone Pine before. It's along the 395. Pretty standard fare.mathinc
