My new laptop came today. I picked up a refurbished 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip, 12 CPU / 18 GPU core, 36GB of memory. Got a great deal after trading in a couple of old work phones.
- Nice @monospaced!
Apple certified OR other?
Lookin' at similar spec myself; deciding between Macbook Air / Pro...ideaist - Yeah from apple.monospaced
- I knew I could save a ton with a Mac minii, but opted for portability.monospaced
- AND the M3 Pro chip is VERY capable opposed to a brand new M4, eh?
Niiice.ideaist - Will outpace the base model by a huge margin.monospaced
- M4 is just bettergrafician
- I doubt the base M4 would outperform an M3 Pro with double the memorymonospaced
- Plus, the M4 isn’t even available and certainly not at the reduced price.monospaced
- The M4 equivalent would have cost nearly $900 more, and I wouldn’t even notice the difference.monospaced
- 36GB of memory is going to be insane on any M chip. Should easily last you ten years********
- That was my goal. And of course will help a ton with my 3D. I only went with a 512GB HD.monospaced
- Nice @monospaced!

From Reddit:
MacBooks use unified memory. On standard laptop and PC, you have fixed RAM and fixed GPU memory, but on MacBook, you can decide what amount of memory you use as GPU and CPU memory. So if you buy MacBook with 128GB unified memory, you can left 16GB for system and you have 112GB of GPU memory. In machine learning, the biggest limiting factor is not GPU performance or CPU performance, it is GPU memory. The biggest amount of memory you can get on consumer GPU in PC world is 4090 with 24GB memory. If you want more, you can buy NVIDIA A40 with 48GB memory for around 7000 USD. If you need more for your neural net model, you can buy Nvidia A100 with 80GB memory for around 20 000 USD. If you want even more, you would have to go way way above 30K. But with MacBook Pro M4 Max 128GB you have still more GPU memory and it is only 4999 USD. So it is by far the cheapest computer for this kind of purpose which you can buy.
- Nvidia cards aren't utilizing all PCI-E lanes, they can put multiple TB RAM on a card if they want.sted
- They don’t. Do they?monospaced
- The bottleneck is ram speed. M4 chips use DDR5 memory which is about 10x slower than the DDR6 and HBM memory used on graphics cards.monNom
- You can run just about any model on CPU with system memory. It just might be really slow.monNom
- yep, unless you're developing your own AI or using something Apple architecture specific this is not the case... GPUs are so much faster they can swap back andkingsteven
- forth between GPU memory and system memory and still be many times faster. + most AI applications are designed to work in this waykingsteven
- i have a £700 4070Ti SUPER in my 6 y/o PC and it'll beat the ass off an M4 Max in anything AI graphics (other than theoretical benchmarks), and heat my house...kingsteven
- still love my M1 Max though its a case of choose (speed + cost effectiveness) or (memory + energy efficiency) nobody has both and 99.9% of applications GPU winskingsteven
- don't get me started on compatibility/ documentation of ARM specific builds of machine learning toolskingsteven

All migrated to the M4 from my M1. Eager to see the performance improvements once I get back to working on my music project in Logic Pro. Had to rethink my USB stuff and bought a bunch of new cables to mostly stop using USB-A's, but at least my monitors have USB-A plugs for anything that absolutely needs them.

Oh, so wonderful...
In the middle of a zoom appointment, my 2018 MBP screen started flickering. Mildly at first, then it got worse, the screen was basically splitting horizontally and displaying the top menu bar in the middle.
Screen eventually went black. Can't even start up with an external monitor and see anything. When I try various safe restart methods, the screen stays black and the startup sound just plays every 10-20 seconds.
Going to the apple store in less than an hour to have it looked at. I'm sure they'll charge me hundreds of dollars to fix something; there's no way I can afford a new laptop right now.
- Not good; Could be internal GPU burned out, which involves the entire logic board. Or perhaps screen or display hinge cable — which is also significant.evilpeacock
- That sucks. But you did the full migration to the mini so that’s good right?monospaced
- Get the work off, that happened to me, it's a slow decay.PhanLo
- ya sounds like GPUpango
- IF Apple wants to do a logic board replacement, and you want to pay for it, then go to a data recovery place first to get the data BEFORE Apple touches it.monospaced
- Sorry to hear that.canoe
- Thanks. I did a Time Machine backup last week. Went to the store, screen is dead. $650 to repair.mg33
- I don't need one right away, but I'm honestly considering upgrading into a refurbished 15 inch M3 Air, which would trounce my 2018 Intel MBP.mg33
- For 650 you can almost buy a mac mini...oey_oey
- Same happened to my old MacBook. I am using it now attached to a different monitor.zaq
- This will still run with an external monitor, but I already have that with the Mac mini.mg33
- same happened to me - i could use an external monitor as a mirror for about a week and then that stopped too..._me_

RE: my post below about my 2018 MBP screen.
Reassure me / convince me that in virtually all tasks I'd do on a laptop, (PS work, but nothing outrageous, Lightroom editing (not classic version), Illustrator, running stuff for my pen plotter, and web / Wordpress work) a M3 MacBook Air with 16gb ram is going to run circles around a 2018 intel i7 MBP.
If an M3 MacBook Air is comparable to an M1 Mac mini with 16gb ram (which would just traded in) I have to assume it's going to be perfectly suitable, given I have the new M4 Mini with 24gb ram to do serious stuff.
Need to place an order ASAP.

- Apple certified refurbished is the way to go.monospaced
- An M1 Mac with 16GB eould run circles around your Intel. M3 will be even better********

- FCP sucksYakuZoku
- Can you do color grading in it?grafician
- Yes but premiere and especially resolve has more controlsYakuZoku
- Ok I have this DaVinci Resolve thing installed, maybe I should try it
No more Adobe apps for me for a while nowgrafician - Enjoy man, yeah FCP is like a toy in comparison, especially with Premiere's updates the last couple of yearsYakuZoku
- But Resolve Grading FTWYakuZoku
- I use all three NLEs and would say FCPX is way more performant than Premiere on same hardware, and it does have similar color controls. Crashes far less too.evilpeacock
- The bugs in Premiere are a shitstorm; Morph Cut hasn't worked w/o crashing for over six months. PP CC25 copies a bunch of FCP features even!evilpeacock
- Resolve def takes the grading crown; But it started out as a colorist tool and they added more edit features in recent years, so go figure.evilpeacock

testing testing...
Hi friends :) just got the new Mac Mini M4. Going to try to connect to my existing iMac 2011.
I would like to use it as a main monitor but will settle for a second if that's easier. With the option to toggle between both computer systems if needed. Does that sound doable? (hope that makes sense)
I know there are screen mirroring options, thought about using target display mode but turns out the mini has to be older for that to work.
Can anyone help me with connection options, do I have any? lol
I searched YouTube and I'm now more confused. : /
ty!! <3- I don’t think you can unfortunately. That iMac just isn’t up to date enough to do the fancy interactions either. Probably best to just get a new display.monospaced
- hey sea_sea!!!!!oey_oey
- Try dis: https://www.amazon.c…thenohero
- target display mode wont work with the m4. airplay might work - though it maxes out at 4kkingsteven
- oh, 2011! god damn, that's very old lol... before 5k iMacs anyway and not sure you can even upgrade to a compatible OS to use airplay :skingsteven
- Exactly. It won’t be able to do the auto connection between devices. I love my old 2012 iMac but it’s done.monospaced
- I think thought there was a way, gnash posted about it I think...but maybe not the m4_niko
- Good luck!!
(High, C’s! ❤️)PonyBoy - Thanks guys! yea haven't been doing loads of work on my desktop. the 2011 is good for basic stuff but it's def time to get to work! hahasea_sea
- I found out I can do screen mirroring from a newer monitor. Mcgyver comes to mind. xD Not that you'll want to know, but I'll chime in with my end result. ;)sea_sea

- Good luck sea_sea. I tried something similar last year with my old gear. It was such a headache I gave up and just bought a new 5k screen and new laptopfuturefood

Should I get:
A) MacBook Air M3
8-Core CPU
10-Core GPU
24GB Unified Memory
512GB SSD- or -
B) MacBook Pro M4 PRO
12-Core CPU
16-Core GPU
24GB Unified Memory
512GB SSDI prefer a smaller, lighter computer for travel. 99% of usage in clamshell mode at my desk.
However, I want to start diving into AI more, so option B is more powerful for +$500. Is B going to make a difference?
- for $500 more B is a no brainerspl33nidoru
- BGnash
- Pro vs Air. Waaay more powerful. If you can spare it go with the m4 no question about it. Or consider an M3 Pro with more memory which is what I did.monospaced
- I'm kind of in the same decision process...the pro is a mean machine, but heavy and big. also considering M4mini + Air or IPAD for presentation stuff.uan
- Bmilfhunter
- in my world all this GPU CPU power is to much. video editing or rendering or playing with own AI models is where you need that power.uan
- B, that $500 will pay a bit of tech dividend for a few years. I think the neural engine on the m4 is much more powerful vs m3 for AI stuff as well.dibec
- for such a difference in power for 500€ only...and if you have the money, def Boey_oey
- K I was leaning toward B but it seemed strange that it was only +$500. (Not a lot of money in 2024)********
- The extra weight is annoying but I can live with it. Seems like you’re all agreeing on B, which is what I leaned toward********
- The 14" is pretty lean. I chose it over the 16" and I don't entirely regret it.monospaced
- Twice pro, it has to be very pro! Buy it!!OBBTKN
- I went for B. Do not regret it one bit.futurefood
- Don't buy a black macbook. I truly regret it.stewart
- Why do you regret black?********
- i got an ipad pro this year with the m4. fucking amazing. logic pro for ipad is amazing.ephix

nb,
Check out the Apple Refurbished M3's.
(link to the refurbished store is in the footer of the apple site)Got a MBP M3 Max, 48gbRam, 16 GPU,40 CPU, 1tbSSD
£3309 (with something like £509 off)Pretty good deal as it stands.
I got a further 17% off 'cos of 'F&F discount' as I know a man who knows a man.
Pretty stoked with this beast so far.
Updating from a 5 or so year old Dell Laptop PC.
Actually the first Mac I've owned.

I have an old iPad Pro (2016?) that handles itself very well. I love it.
I don’t think it is possible to design and code a decent portfolio site on an iPad Pro, yet.
Or, is it?
I would love to not buy a new computer, but I need to update my cv, portfolio site and a deck. Figure most employers want to see Figma

water spilled into laptop bag on the plane. mbp m1 sitting in a good 1cm pool of water... water spilling out of the insides... fuck me...
Got home, unscrewed back, luckily still all dusty inside... doesnt look wet... fan aimed at internals overnight. It's now on and working, minus flashing to a black screen every 30mins or so.... Probably something inside is short circuiting, though thank fuck I can at least now back everything up.
Spills aside... did make me think why Apple havent dust/water proofed their "pro" laptops yet. Considering how much work is done on the field under shit conditions
