Is it worth waiting to see how the new MBP holds up (w/M1 chip or better)? ...or would it be fine to buy 2019+ machine (refurb) w/some respectable internal workings...

    Something like:
    2.4GHz+ 8-core Intel Core i9, 8GB AMD Radeon Pro 5600M, 32GB RAM... maybe a 2TB drive @ around $3,500 - $4k...

... or do I wait? I need to upgrade and I finally have the means to... and I'm kinda scared of getting a first gen machine anyway (which the new MBPs could be considered given the expected chips / updates overall).

    • Wait. I certainly am.inteliboy
    • Wait. Or get an M1 air or 13''.
Def. get something with an M1 or next gen chip.
      uan
    • Going for that old model, not risking it with the M1 yet. Also keep in mind even the new MBPros with M1x would still be "first gen" so yeah, can't wait yearsgrafician
    • $3500+ for a refurbished old laptop? Versus the brand new, faster M1 at $2299? You're throwing money away if you buy the old one.nb
    • You're going to spend an extra $1200+ just in case the new M1s don't "hold up?" This is insane!! Just get the $250 Apple Care if you're afraid.nb
    • I've heard 'meh' reactions to those w/the new M1 chip... for 3,500 will I get a 2TB drive and 32G of ram in an M1 chip MBP? I have nothing to compare to... :/PonyBoy
    • You can't get that much RAM but it apparently doesn't need that much. Next gen probably will have more.monospaced
    • ... and more importantly my old machine is literally at the end... I'm in a shitty spot where I may not even be able to wait (which I'm leaning towards doing).PonyBoy

Just tested side by side the MBPro 13 with M1 vs. the MBPro 16 with i9 2020

    M1 8 cores 8GB
    i9 8 cores 16GB + Radeon 5500 4GB

Opened all default Big Sur apps + Affinity all apps with tutorial files (the most complex ones) + Spline 3D app

M1 run out of RAM pretty quickly as each Affinity app needs about 500MB just to be opened and used about 800-1GB each app to open the tutorial files

I applied 5-6 Effects like Gausian blur, 3D, etc. in Affinity Photo and Designer and in Publisher I opened the biggest tutorial brochure and copy pasted repeatedly some of the heavy pages full of elements and in Spline 3D I used the Devices scene that's pretty heavy on my iMac and copied the included iPhone and spheres over and over

    -
The test was done in an Apple showroom so I couldn't install Adobe apps or any other 3D app, I only downloaded Spline 3D quickly from their website and run it
    -

Conclusion: i9 a bit faster switching apps and executing options say 5-10% (probably because of 16GB of RAM) other than that, these 2 laptops are the same in performance it seems.

Price of M1 13" is about 1800 EUR while the i9 16" is about 2800 EUR

Probably the M1 with 16GB would've performed exactly the same as the i9 with 16GB

So...if you wanted to upgrade now, I would go for the i9 16 2020 (a bit faster and better display and ergonomics) instead of these entry-level M1 laptops

Then upgrade again in 3 years to the new M2 or M3 by then.

    • I also briefly tested the new iMac M1, but at first hand, it's slower than the MBPro M1 somehow. So that's a NO for the iMac M1grafician
    • Upgrading in 3 years is a hard pill to swallow though. Think I'll wait till Oct for the 16" M1. It's a complete overhaul compared to the 13" you are testing.Hayzilla
    • Keep in mind my tests today used optimized apps for both M1 and Intel. Adobe apps would probably work better on the Intel for now.grafician
    • If battery life is key get an M1. That's the big boost you get at the same or better performance.evilpeacock
    • “these 2 laptops are the same in performance it seems.” and then you recommend the one that costs 1000 Euros more? Does not compute, literallynb
    • @nb performance and longevity are my key buying points, not price lolgrafician
    • Also the new MB Pro laptops announced for October offer no guarantee they won't be priced over $5K at the same M1 and just 32GB RAM. Would you buy that?grafician
    • Anyway, this was a test with real design apps and these entry-level M1 laptops are just that, entry level performance. So get the i9 if you can't wait.grafician
    • nice graf... thx for sharing this!PonyBoy
    • @evilpeacock yes, probably battery life for M1 is double that of Intel Macs at 10-12 hours.
      @PonyBoy glad to help
      grafician
    • The 5500 is fine but not an impressive performer.kalkal
    • Current MBP 16 is from 2019, not 2020 and by your own logic the M1 will be faster when Adobe ports over and is 1000 noop cheaper?kingsteven
    • Get M1, sell when the M2 arrives, the M1 will be worth more than the i9 by that point...kingsteven
    • @kingsteven Yeah no: https://themactip.co…

Also for that extra $1000 you get 16GBRAM, 16" screen, a real graphics card, extra ports, etc.
      grafician
    • Then I can get the new M1 second hand for something like 700-800 euros, while the 16" i9 is in the 1500 - 2000 rangegrafician
    • I wouldn't be so sure about the intel mac retaining the price, I lost over half the value of my Powerbook the last time they transitioned architecture.kalkal
    • ...and that was just a year after the intel Macs were out.kalkal
    • @kalkal if the OS still supports the Intel Macs, regular users don't care what processor they get inside. But they will pay extra for 16", more ports than 13"grafician
    • also unless the design/3D/motion apps aren't updated to use Metro - only depending on CPU power is no-go for now - at least for megrafician
    • But IF you guys want to go for M1 Macs now, get at least the 16GB model.grafician
    • The idea of doing any 3D with 16GB of RAM is like trying to get to the moon with a rickshaw. I'm glad I bought my first PC last year.CyBrainX
    • ^The idea that just a few years ago you were doing 3D with 4 or 8GB or RAM sounds crazy now, but hey...grafician
    • graf, we've been working with 32 and 64GB for over a decade nowmonospaced
    • @mono while Apple introducing the *latest* 8GB and 16GB laptops [rolling eyes]grafician
    • @mono also wtf are you talking about Apple only offered 64GB machines since a few years ago, I got the first iMac with 64GB option myself
      Smh...

    • @mono so you went after a decade and upgraded your iMAc with 8GB DIMMs x4 to 32GB when they were available?
Who the fuck do you think you're bullshiting here
      grafician
    • also you mention Mac Pros with 128GB that's theoretical you chump, only recently you could get 32GB DIMMs
NOT DECADES AGO AS YOU SAY

After some discussions here about the latest M1 Macs and 3D performance, did some research (I'm not a 3D guy so just being curious about it) and found that Maxon the makers of Cinema 4D are offering support for the Metal API in Mac, both for Intel Macs and M1 Macs since April 2021

So this basically means - correct me if I'm wrong - that you can use Cinema 4D and Redshift renderer to do 3D on any Mac, including the M1 Macs entry level and the new ones coming up in the Fall.

Here's a video of the CEO of Maxon talking about the update:

Here's the news article with more details from MAxon back in April: https://www.maxon.net/en/article…

    Here's Redshift's requirements: https://www.redshift3d.com/produ…

So can you QBNers 3D bigshots explain to me now in this context how "Macs are not ok for 3D" or "The idea of doing any 3D with 16GB of RAM is like trying to get to the moon with a rickshaw." still stands when you can do pretty much anything in Cinema 4D + Redshift on any Mac now.

Redshifts recommended specs for Macs now include "For macOS: Apple M1 16GB or AMD "Navi" or "Vega" GPU with 8GB VRAM or more. See GPU list below" along with all the Radeon GPUs since about 2019?

p.s. After my M1 vs Intel test bellow I recommended getting the Intel Macbook Pro (as a laptop) and wait for the M2 or M3 because the Intel Macs have good GPUs that work better with Adobe and in this case Cinema 4D as it turns out - so why are you guys skipping a beat over this lol

    • Btw all native design apps like Affinity use Metal on Mac and the performance is way over anything Adobe offers - Adobe practically doesn't offer any optimisatigrafician
    • optimisation for Macs! Not to mention running virtualisation for M1 Macs so good luck using Ae or Premiere with thatgrafician
    • I can't watch videos with people making this face.section_014
    • @section that's cool, it's just a short interview with the CEO of Maxon and a guy from an animation studio talking about the new optimisations for Macsgrafician
    • C4D has run on Macs for at least 10 years. Just because it works doesn't mean it works well. In fact, it's shit and has its own host of problems.face_melter
    • C4D is a niche program - nowhere near the presence of 3ds Max. It's used in film/tv for comp work but everyone uses Max, for good or bad.face_melter
    • Christ, I used C4D for 10 years and decided to move to Max because it was nothing but misery trying to get things to work decently.face_melter
    • So until Autodesk ship Max on OSX then no-one cares - it is the the most ubiquitous 3D program out there. Plus you have render engines to think about as well.face_melter
    • Also good luck trying to load a +10Gb file with multiple instances and xrefs and making it work with just 16Gb of memory.face_melter
    • Lol, still rocking C4D R15 on an intel i7 2013....shapesalad
    • @face_melter This is the Apple thread mate, ofc we're discussing 3D options for Macs. You can run Maya, Blender, Zbrush, Modo, fuck 3dsmax lolgrafician
    • wait wait, you can also run fucking Houdini on Intel Macs so...
Anyway, most designers just Cinema 4D that's why is important
      grafician
    • I agree 100% w face_melter. I have been using Max for 20+ years now, my industries aren't going Mac anytime soon. These tiny scenes aren't really real world.formed
    • Sure, but nobody is disputing that lol
I was just discussing 3D options for Macs.
You guys seem too laser focused on your 3dsmax tho'

^ Another 3 videos running Maya, Zbrush and Blender on the latest M1 Macs

Idk what dopepope's machine is running Zbrush to sculpt those amazing 3D models of his, but the M1 16GB looks like it can handle a pretty big load on only 8 cores and with no optimisation for its GPU cores so far.

Like the guy in the second videos says "but can you imagine a 32 core version of the M1, that would be an amazing workstation"

    -

Not expecting new processors from Apple for at least a cycle, so that's next year Autumn. Guessing they will still use the M1 and just tweak the other specs for the new iMacs and MBPro 16"

    • Game changer? I always thought if you do 3D = PC, no question.inteliboy
    • I mean if your interested in learning 3D tools this is exciting but I can't see it shaking up many 3D workflows yet as Apple has just ignored the High Endjonny_quest_lives
    • 3D tools and End Users for too long.jonny_quest_lives
    • of course if you are making $25 billion in revenue on Airpods alone per year you can afford to ignore the 3D market...jonny_quest_lives
    • https://wccftech.com…jonny_quest_lives
    • Most designers use Cinema 4D for a lot of stuff on Macs and from what I can see you can also use Maya, Blender & Zbrush with no issues, so what's up?grafician
    • Archviz (my industry) is all PC. 3DSMax does not run on a Mac.formed
    • I don't get the first one. First, those are all instances of one model, not like a 'real' scene, second, he never rendered the scene. Nothing to see there.formed
    • I love how the M1 is stirring up the industry, but by the time there is a 32 core version the competition will have caught up/surpassed, at least for 3D.formed
    • It really only matters what works today and so far, the M1 isn't addressing the high-end markets.formed
    • @formed that's cool
you can check out the other video bellow, the animation guy talking about rendering times reduction from 26 mins to 58 secs
      grafician
    • < and you can see in the Blender video an interior scene rendering and the guy uses the 8GB M1 modelgrafician
    • but he's comparing it to an i5 chip. They are up to i9 now. I'll need to see a true benchmark comparison, not just a video of someone on YouTube.formed
    • I am not questioning that it's an amazing chip, though, just that it's not a pro-beater (yet).formed
    • The guy said they were using 32 cores vs. 8 cores for the M1 so is this running THAT fast? Optimisation counts it seems.grafician
    • Makes you think why we pay thousands for hardware while the software fuckers never optimise anything!grafician
  • i_monk0

    • The mini speaker gets terrible reviews, guess I'll find out soon.i_monk
    • Apple sells LG monitors on their website. Pretty easy choice? Personally, I'll be going for Dell's 42" UltraSharp curved monitor.formed

Guess the new Mac Pros won't be using any Apple silicon yet?

    • This is just GPU updates for current Intel Macs. Apple Silicon "pro" Macs aren't announced yet.evilpeacock
    • They updated the existing line with this option a few days ago.monospaced
    • While I think Apple's MPX form factors aren't all bad, one could already get non-Apple GPUs (or CPUs) and drop 'em in already.evilpeacock
    • How is this GPU compared to nVidia ones?grafician
    • They are good GPUs, but they don't have support for CUDA. That means some 3D renders can't even use them.monospaced
    • Hmm how exactly could AMD GPUs have support for CUDA when that's nVidia tech?!
It's up to the 3D renderers teams to offer support lol
