Right, this is day one and just QBN. I fear the day they actually release something.

Of course you can do it cheaper with a Windows machine/custom build/whatever. When was that not the case?

Yeah I'm a bit nostalgic, but it was more fun when you blithely bought a Mac because you were a designer. Perhaps it was easy because sending print artworks from Windows would earn you a well-deserved slap.

Now everyone's an expert, poring over performance charts and lab tests and blowing angry little dismissive bubbles to climb into; it's a piece of shit while it's still only PR. Was the sky not cloudy enough yesterday?

Throw away your Rotring retractable pencils, you can get 'em free at IKEA.

    • well said clap clap clap_niko
    • People laugh and hate on every single apple launch ever. Expected... but still surprises me that well war trodden qbn still falls for it all.inteliboy
    • Yep. I'll probably get flamed overnight hehe.MrT
    • but price point at basic is a sub 2K build for 5999... ill informed consumers should know. more informed buyers generate better markets and products.deathboy
    • by the way how can you tell if you sent a print artwork from windows or a mac?deathboy
    • I’m going way back. When you packaged up the whole thing with fonts. Printers always kicked off...MrT
    • I understand the better-informed angle, but as soon as you buy anything it’s dated. It’s the pathological constant comparison I’m niggled byMrT
    • Yeah everyone's a critic and self-appointed expert these days. Go back and read the comments on QBN when the iPad was released...almost 100% negativeyuekit

    • Just too expensive - I built a PC with more than the highest specs of the trash can for under 6K - It would have cost over 30K from apple - no upgrades either.toemaas

the G5 towers looked so much nicer.

    • Yeah, that one was slick and functional, like an evolved version of the current cheese grater.formed

    • I like the new one too, I don't know if its that small, It looks on some photos cause the screen is big.... but...valentim
    • I think they would've made a classy move if they kept the G5 design but in a much smaller tower for the new mac pro instead that that bizarre cheese grater.maquito
    • you're right, it's actually about the same size as the old one! looks are deciving, that old one was a beastmonospaced

I'm slowly picking my way through the keynote and the recaps, but honestly this feels like Apple actually did something this time around. I'me excited about dark mode, but in the grand scheme of things it's not that hard of thing to have made. The new volume indicator was a long time coming... but why couldn't they have gotten it right numerous releases ago?

The privacy, Apple sign-in, and related new features really feel like either an answer to things most people need, or don't know they need. I'm slowly acclimating myself to how our data is used, where it goes, etc. aka all the things the average consumer probably never thinks about. Really feels like Apple is making some moves to be an outlier in terms of privacy, and that feels like a lot more genuine care for their users than screen updates, animoji, and other semi-superficial stuff.

    i dunno.

we've all moaned at apple for abandoning the pro market for years - that trashcan was next to useless with it's lack of expandability - and now they've delivered big style, with a super fuck-off ult-pro behemoth that can pretty much do anything anyone wants.

ok so it costs shedloads, but the base model isn't so expensive and has all the expandability we've all been wanting for ages.

    and yet we still moan.

    • and there's even an option for wheels! what's not to like?hans_glib
    • Power-wise it looks incredible, but I'll never own one. Most people on here won't either.
The handles are probably easier to use than the G5's too.
      PhanLo
    • The people who need that Mac Pro and are willing to spend the money know exactly who they are.mg33
    • I had no idea there were film-making reference monitors pushing $10, $15, $20K. It sound's like Apple's monitor might be a no-brainer for film studios.mg33
    • A 5" film-grade display is $1k. A 10" is pushing $3k. Having a freakin 30" is insanely innovative at those specs. Some people simply don't understand.monospaced
    • Sorry, but the base model is "so expensive". $6k is so far beyond the sum of it's parts, it's absurd. And, there's about a 2% chance expandability isn'tsection_014

About a hundred comments so far about the cheese grater thing lol. Why is everyone so hung up on appearance when that's clearly not Apple's focus here?

    • they day apple announce a product and the internet doesn't burst with hate and mockery, is the day we actually know they are no longer important.inteliboy
    • Apple always focuses on appearances.zarkonite
    • Apple focuses on appearance to sell phones and watches to the average consumer. Seems pretty clear the design here is for performance, cooling, etc.yuekit
    • you'd think someone who claims to be a designer lifting everything from dieter rams would care how a piece of industrial equipment would lookimbecile
    • people used to buy apple simple because it looked "better", don't act as if appearance is not a contributing factor to purchase.imbecile
    • it looks like a cheese grater for the record.imbecile
    • So what, a cheese grater can’t be beautiful? I like the new design, has a more brutalist architecture feel. I’m sure it’s exactly like they wanted aestheticallyESKEMA
    • I think it looks cool. Everything different looks "weird" or "off" at first. Remember when they release iOS 7 and everyone here shit on it 24/7 for a week?monospaced

What is fascinating (perplexing?) about the millions of comments, tweets 'n memes in past 48 hours over the price point(!) and the stand(!!!) is almost all of the people taking time out of their lives to stoke the uproar are not the target consumer for this product.

They aren't out there crushing complex, pro-level projects on deadlines for a busy studio or demanding clients, that at that level would likely have those equipment costs covered in short order, and prob just pays for itself for next few years.

99% of consumers looking to buy a computer soon will have no need for a super-computer w/ a pro display, so the costs involved w/ these products will have little or no effect on their lives. What does it matter?

If you want an example of this in another form looks at cameras - everyone loves cameras. Almost everybody has one or has had one - even a good one. 99% of people will find a $450 Canon Rebel (lens included!) beyond their needs... but in a heartbeat you could drop $7k on a pro-level Nikon D5 and lens is extra! And a lens can run north of $1-5k w/o even breaking a sweat.

So is it b/c it's Apple?... that ANY announcement from them, even one that is clearly targeted to the pro user, is automatically cause for concern for many b/c they happen to own an iPhone for social apps mainly, and a 2012 MacBook Air they use occasionally to search eBay?

Anyway, fascinating. People are losing their minds!

    • < thishans_glib
    • True, but actually all press is good press, so even people (ridiculously) complaining, create a media impact/coverage. All positive for Apple.SimonFFM
    • I'm sure the stand is worth is price considering the engineering details that went into it (internals and function). But it's still a slight PR disaster.NBQ00
    • IMO Apple should've just added the stand and its price to the monitor and only offered the Vesa mount separately.NBQ00
    • The fascinating part is the gaslighting where you say people making fun of a product are losing their minds.imbecile
    • Apple is simply charging consumers for the development of a product they want to use internallyimbecile
    • You're missing the point of people's outrage. We wanted a desktop mac that was upgradable. Not something that could render Lord of the Rings in an hour.section_014
    • Which, the entry level version cannot fucking do. Making a custom mobo and power supply doesn't suddenly triple the price of a computer.section_014
    • I think boils down to majority of everyday Apple users cannot wrap their heads around a pro level product, not used with costs involved = shock + power to tweetprophetone
    • needs nvidiaCALLES
    • As far as the entry-to-high level desktop target user, they have six iMac models, each w/ ability to upgrade ram, space, vid card etcprophetone
    • I’ve had three gens of Mac towers so I get it... this is the reaction to ‘Apple has abandoned the PRO users’ and prob overkill for most, even myselfprophetone
    • I still think Apple should make a lower end tower, and have been saying that for years. Wno't hold my breath.monospaced
    • LOL outrage because it's not what you wanted. If only there were other machines you could buy. Or just wait for the Mac Toddler, the Pro isn't for you.MrT
    • @MrT, everyone wants a product that, when something goes wrong or needs fixing, they don't get overcharged unnecessarilymonospaced
    • The outrage over Apple's entire line of machines that are essentially unfixable or unupgradeable is more than warranted.monospaced
    • You CAN'T buy other machines that run macOS and are supported by Apple. That's the problem.monospaced
    • Then buy a Windows machine and spend your life waiting for and fitting component upgrades.MrT
