A lot of device manufacturers are putting Flash on their devices, which is great news for us Flash folks.

As long as people continue to develop in Flash, iOS will always be missing something. I have an iPhone and an iPad and I thought I wouldn't be missing Flash but I run into sites all the time where I wish iOS did have Flash so I can access the content.

These devices will be able to handle anything we throw at it fairly soon, so the whole "it's too processor intense" just isn't going to hold for very long. Obviously a lot of the sites out there that were built before these devices were out were built with desktop processors in mind and obviously the mobile devices performance will be like viewing the site on a computer from 2004.

Also, I love me a good 'HTML5' (jQuery, CSS, etc) site, probably just as good as a good Flash site. But even iOS devices don't run those fast, if they even run it at all. Slides and fades in HTML5 are super choppy, probably just as choppy if Flash was on iOS.

Please let's get over the whole Flash vs. HTML debate. There will be one and the other for at least another 6 years until some new tech comes out that will make both of these technologies obsolete.

It's amazing that with all the resources at their disposal, Adobe cannot make any kind of inroads into figuring out a solution to this mess.

Here is my 3-part plan to save Flash, not that I care that much, but hey - it's fun:

    1)
Just say 'all that old flash content created for high powered CPUs and a mouse, well, that's just not going to work on phones and tablets. Give up trying'
    2)
Give up on video. It's just not worth it and they can never had what they had for a brief shining moment when almost all video ran through their shell. That's so over.
    3)
Make Flash into a toolset that enables developers to produce great content for different mobile devices. Remember they whole thing they had where you could measure how much bandwith your flash movie was going to be? Like that, but here is what you need to do for iPhone, or Android, or whatever.....and make developers understand that the days of doing anything you want are gone. That there is a tradeoff in developing for different devices.

If Adobe can just do those three things, maybe Flash can survive. If not, well someone out there is working on something that will work...probably already exists.

    • I agree here. Adobe should really step up and make Flash more efficient and less hardware dependent.monospaced
    • finally someone talking senseanimatedgif
    • btw, I've been trying to make that argument for several months now, and people just call me retardedmonospaced

Why are you blaming Adobe completely and not blaming Apple at all? Who's really creating a mess here?

    • it's apple that are being the cocks about the whole thing!microkorg

    Adobe screwed up. It's simple.

I have come to realize that Apple acted in self-defense by not allowing Flash on iPhone and iPad. If they did, the flash apps designed for high powered cpus with a mouse would have failed, and it WOULD HAVE MADE THE IPAD LOOK BAD. So instead of it being a groundbreaking device, the envy of everyone, it could have been seen as a somewhat interesting product that just really wasn't like a computer.

They were smart. Look at all the backpedalling Motorola and Rim are doing just because they are trying so hard to support flash. It's got to be embarassing.

If Adobe had seen the day of the mobile device coming (duh) they could have prepared a transition plan of some sort, but instead they fumbled, and it looks like, are still fumbling the ball.

    • why not work together to make it happen? Instead Apple will "NEVER SUPPORT" ithotroddy

Why is it Apples responsibility to fix Adobes product CyBrainX?

If Adobes product isn't up to scratch (and from my experience using a Galaxy Tab and the reviews of the Xoom it isn't up to scratch) then Apple has every right to keep it from fucking up their product.

    • I've seen Flash run will on Android phones. If a tablet can't run it then by that standard iPads suck not Flash.CyBrainX

I just want to know, who is going to come out with a good 'Flash-like' toolkit that developers and artists can use to create interactive content for mobile devices? I heard apple was creating something...someone has to be doing it.

See how cool is Flash on Mobile:

    TL;DR: it sucks.

Serious question, for Boz. I want your honest opinion on this, because it seems to be an important issue to you, you are well informed in these areas and you like predictions. So, please answer this, Boz.

RIM's PlayBook is launching on the 19th. It's a small, light tablet with great performance and good interface. And it runs Flash.

Because the PlayBook runs Flash, do you (Boz) think the PlayBook will be a success?

Average people do care about Flash, contrary to what some are posting. The hype around Apple's boycott of Flash has gotten to the average person and, surprisingly to me, people are looking down at Apple. Clearly not enough to stop purchases, but it is a bad reputation they are building.

Apple will support Flash, at some point. They'll just go as long as they can, make as much money as they can, before opening up and giving choices.

    formed:

You do not understand the issues. The 'average people' do not care about flash. They just want fun games and websites. If they get a similar experience on their phone or tablet, they will go there. Ever hear of 'Angry Birds' or 'Plants vs. Zombies'?

    • sure.. but they have to pay for it. ... people want Farmville and other stuff but can't get it.. imagine what you could do on a tablet running a free game of on iPad without installing anything, paying anything and always a link awa farmville y. How is that not BETTER than dealing with apps?Boz

    • i thought you wanted developers to make money?eficks
    • well duh.. haha.. developers will make more money being completely open on the web then selling through 1 app store.Boz
    • storeBoz
    • Zynga is proof of that.. name one developer who made the same amount of money on app store?Boz
    • zynga isnt just a mobile game developer. one could argue their success is due to facebook.eficks
    • lol that's like saying those who write games can't make apps ;).. your argument is silly.. Flash+Game/App+huge exposure and openness is what made Zynga insanely rich company. Zynga wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Flash on the web for example and you certainly won't be able to do it in HTML/JS/CSS .. it's not MODULAR. you can't share it.Boz

No it won't be success "because" of it.. but it helps.. and actually if you read the reviews, unlike Apple hordes shitting on Flash and Adobe.. and it's really only Apple zombies.. the rest of the world really has no issues with Flash.. Blackberry playbook runs it perfectly smooth based on reviews so far.

I am not really defending Flash in general.. I am giving my insights, feature requests and bug submissions to Adobe as many other people do to make sure Flash works great.. It's not perfect, but that's understandable as Steve Jobs set this ridiculous expectation that Flash needs to be perfect, when HTML5 and JS and other shit isn't.. The reason he set that expectation was to push apps.. it's very simple.. the web technologies have YET to catch up to mobile and good performance and he needed to create this immense hatred for Flash because he knew that Adobe would act quickly and build a platform that will allow them to build apps, games that are going to run insanely fast, in a mobile browser and cannibalize sales of apps.. If you see, apps are the things that made iOS a success to begin with.. so you do't have to be a genius here to put 2 and 2 together.. Also, go build a site with JS/CSS even using mobile frameworks in beta now.. it will run like shit on mobile.

JS/HTML5/CSS3 is not perfect either.. it's actually far worse performance wise, battery wise and so on because believe it or not it has more CPU dependency than Flash does.. and when something uses more CPU it sucks battery more.. Even compared to current Flash state.

Flash needs to be available on a device..end of story.. The whole justification why Apple prevents it is bullshit really.. Every mobile device, if you want to call it a proper web experience and to use many services that utilize Flash to deliver content (such as Amazon and many others) needs to support it..

The point here is that if you don't want it, you don't have to use it.. but it's a matter of choice really.. That's what's great about Flash.. you can use it but you can block it as well.. It's totally up to you.. Banning it from one platform, and running this crusade against it, when it's clear that every piece of technology on the market is trying to adjust to the new form factor, new performance ceiling and optimizations (Flash is no exception0 and so on is very disingenuous and really only used to rile up brainless masses into trying to boycott something that gave us so much on the web. It's "Freedom Fries' aspect of Americans for the most part..

And we are not even really getting into app development parts and AIR and so on.. We are purely talking about Flash runtime in a mobile browser here.

Any device that deals with mobile needs to have flash as an option.. It's simple as that.. if you don't, you are not giving 100% to your customers..

If you look at RIM's strategy, what they are hoping it will make them a success is the fact that they give users so many options... Flash, Java running OS that also runs Android apps through a virtual machine making it really behave like an Android device..

I mean if these things are done properly it might very well take them to the top.. The thing is that RIM was never known for being a "mainstream consumer' company.. they were always looked at as enterprise solutions company.. and a good one at that..

I think Playbook is great.. it's really a tablet I want.. it runs pretty much everything.. you are unrestricted to run everything, and it does it with insane performance.

And just a note.. Flash Player 11 will be fully GPU accelerated while you can build apps with amazing performance now with AIR 2.6 and next AIR 2.7 (in beta now) .. so Adobe pretty much caught up on both fronts and every device that supports Flash Player in the next year will allow their users to play some of the truly fantastic, full blown 3D games developed by ton of people, fueled by Molehill 3D low level APIs using GPU on the lowest level and a variety of 3d engines, including Unity.

It took them 2 years to really really optimize Flash experience on mobile and it will be completely hardware accelerated.. in every aspect.. something that no other platform (except building it natively for each device) can achieve.

This is what Steve Jobs was trying so hard to prevent..

  • eficks0

early on, steve jobs, and apple, once challenged adobe to bring flash to the iphone. pretty sure that apple decided to leave adobe in the dust. even if flash is somewhat ready for mobile devices.

  • CyBrainX0

Ask the average phone/tablet user what Flash is on their page and when it's missing from iOS and they will not know.

The point is they don't know or care what it is when they see it and they don't know why they're seeing a blank square or why their vimeo movie won't play. They just like good stuff.

Flash makes better stuff than html5.

  • microkorg0

"Flash makes better stuff than html5."
the porn is a lot better too.
video embedded in flash is so much better than an html5 porn animation
    hahaha

  • Boz0

and how the fuck will run 1080p full screen porn in HTML5.. you just can't!!

    HTML5 = fail :)

    • you douche bag, 3d porn is where it's at. get with the times.eficks
    • why can't you?animatedgif
