Why do so many so-called "designers" fail to realise that multiple products exist because different users have different needs and priorities. All the Apple haters take Apple as a personal affront simply because Apple aren't targeting their needs. If you want cheap clunky crap go get a Dell or an Acer, no one is stopping you.

Apple's exploitation of their customer base is as thorough, ruthless and efficient as the Native American exploitation of the Bison, nothing is overlooked, every means of extracting revenue is explored. If they were a fascist dictatorship, they would be both terrifying and admirable.

you first part of the argument is exactly what's infuriating about an average Apple brainless user. There is nothing "clunky" about Dell or other manufacturers..

Apple has created this notion that their products are superior to everyone else, when they are not. I am a Mac user and a PC user and I have had and still have both Macs and PCs in my house, have used mac notebooks and PC notebooks. There's nothing superior with Apple products.. The only thing they do admirably well is package the same hardware and ideas into a slimmer and visually more appealing product. It doesn't make it better.. Actually quite the contrary, in many cases they sacrifice performance and the bleeding edge in hardware to fit it into a slimmer form factor.

Their hardware doesn't last longer... I've had so many issues with laptops for example, and I've never had issues with Dell laptops on the other hand.

The perception that Apple makes higher quality products is only their PR and the fact that most news sites and gadget sites are Mac fanboys so nobody makes a big fuss about the stuff that's wrong.. And we all know, Apple will NEVER EVER admit there's a problem.. if they can hold it under the table and lie, deceive, blame everyone else in order to justify their own flaws they will.

That's what makes that "apple hardware is superior" idea.

The fact that users have opinions like you just noted is what makes me personally pissed off.. That superiority complex that actually has no connection with reality. It's all hype.

Has anyone here mentioned that the new Air Macbook has the old Core 2 Duo , Apple is taken the piss putting that thing in a new computer, hahaha.

    • The Core 2 Due/Nvidia beats the i3 with Intel graphics in performance.MSL
    • MSL: it doesn't, every benchmark in the world proves it.zarkonite

    Jeeeeez,
This is bloody out of control!

Gents, I was asking as a DESIGNER what do you think about the new DESIGN of that bloody toy, because after all, this is a DESIGN forum.

We all know that it is expensive, mainly because it looks good, and there is no way it will beat a PC in cost/performance. We also know that so far there are no PCs that look anywhere near as good as a Mac whatsofuckingever.

Also we know than when PCs try to look somehow good, they usually cost more than a Mac (as the top range sony/toshiba).

I guess this little mac is a nice product, suitable for showing off in a board room, or for a cute girlfriend with a few quids on her. The processor will do the deal unless you want to edit 3D HD stuff in afterFX which obviously is NOT the idea.

So why don't we do the bloody group hug proposed a few pages earlier and move on into discussing if it looks pretty or not, or the functionality of keyboard + massive multi-point touch pad.

    many fanks, yo

    • "We also know that so far there are no PCs that look anywhere near as good as a Mac whatsofuckingever."

      That's a very subjective thing.

I am not the target market for the Air as it is somewhat underpowered for my needs, but I am buying Apple laptops for a few good reasons:

    —they offer me to run any OS and are the only machines that let me run OSX, the best system I worked with so far (this is a subjective opinion, solely my personal preference). It is also an OS I need for work. The OS alone is enough to end the discussion;

    —they have top battery performance;

—they have excellent case design, ie. they usually are about the thinnest laptops in their class on the market, they have solid unibody shell, they have magnetic power connector (I saw a Dell fall from the table pulled by power cord once), they have magnetic latch. They are nicely sealed from dust when closed (I had this problem with Dell, the screen always gathered dust from the bag the laptop was in).

—they are the best visually designed hardware on the market. I didn't understand why computers looked like shit in the 90's, I don't understand it now. Apple computers don't look like shit.

Is all of the above worth the premium? For me, who spends most time and makes money in front of a computer, yes.
I don't even pay the premium though, I usually go with refurbs.

    • Oh fuck, here I am, arguing with Boz,
      Just kill me now.
      raf
    • that's all very acceptable reasoning.. and reason why I get some of their stuff.. but they are not better then everyone else..their shit breaks too, it's very often underpowered etc.. but I agree with you on all points you listed.Boz

^ it is very nice 11" netbook. :)

I would buy it in a second if it was like $600-$700 for 11" and maybe $999 when maxed out..

Maxed out now with 1.6ghz C2D and 4gb of ram is $1400.. That's a bit too much right now..

I can personally afford it but having an iPad.. I'm even less inclined as iPad does the job for these basic things quite well.

The best use for the new MacBook air is as a portable disabled ramp for your wheelchair

Just wish they'd make a macbook pro without a cd drive on it

    • They will.raf

usability over style any day.. fuck i would gladly give up a few extra cm of width on my macbook pro for another usb port..

there are so many things which could make the mac's friggin awesome, but instead, they insist on hamstringing their machines ..

it really wouldnt kill them to allow slightly added functionality

    • "thinnest laptop" is usability in my book, a winning feature.raf
    • have fun trying to use a mouse, USB soundcard and a midi controller.autoflavour
    • Why would I want that? It's not a computer for professional audio production, it's a basic LIGHT computerraf
  • must_dash0

so they make it wider so you can have your usb port, and then other people will complain they don't need it.

    • you know what they dont fucking need is the SD reader.. that is fucking retardedautoflavour
    • take the one feature which enables flexibility and makes up for the lack of ports.. and replace it with a SD slotautoflavour

THIS IS THE MOST OFFENDED I'VE EVER BEEN... THIS IS THE MADDEST I EVER WILL BE. I'M TYPING SO FUCKING HARD I MIGHT BREAK MY FUCKING MAC BOOK AIR!!!!!!!!

  • Miguex0

    regarding this:

no offense to anyone here, read my previous comments to learn that I'm not a fan boy, in fact this is the first positive thing I'm saying about the macbook air.

Apple has Osx, they will always win (no pun intended)
if gateway computers would be able to run Osx as stable as a mac, then I would go buy a gateway (maybe not, but almost).

I laugh when sony or other respectable brands aim to charge for a laptop more than what a mac costs, because you have to run windows, they spend all this time making amazing hardware for what.

    • the Gateway weight more then 2 macbook air. hah. nice compare.akrok
    • hardware specs are not everything.rosem

Real netbooks are awesome, my girl has one.
Super tiny computers really lightweight, I'm prety sure batter life is way over 5 hours, maybe more like 8hs.

If apple made a good economic netbook, sales would go through the roof.

    • its called an iPad. And sales are pretty good actually.kpl
  • mcmillions0

    hmm, the plot thickens

    • They're incomparable devices. The Air's main feature: it is lightweight and thin.raf

Sony Vaio VPC-X115KX/N is probably the closest computer I could find to the mba for now:

$1500. With GPS, larger SSD, and a craptastic Atom. and Windows 7.

    • what's up with that color? gold, bronze mixed.akrok
    • Great. WIRELESS IT CAPS. pff.akrok
    • you can get the gateway above to run the same software for a 1/4 of the price.Miguex

    ^

to be fair that computer was released 10 months ago. Still, $1500 for that in 2009 still doesn't sound like as nice as $1000 for a 11" MBA in 2010.

The name "Gateway NV5929u" alone is a huge marketing fail in and of itself.

Not to imply that mac users are 'cool' people or anything, but the whole pc realm is so nerdy. NV5929u? Seriously? How forgettable. Are Gateway's engineers and marketing people the same people?

    • people who buy gateway wouldn't care anyway, so marketing $$ saved.SteveJobs
    • always go the cheap route, eh? which company has been on the rise and is always in the spotlight? Apple or Gateway?iCanHasQBN
    • and whats the marketing expense in a one-word, memorable name? $0?iCanHasQBN
    • yes, that's pretty much how much effort goes into marketing. c'mon..SteveJobs
    • i'm just talking about the name itself. give it a simple one-word name that people can remember - at the LEAST.iCanHasQBN
    • i guarantee you nobody has ever stated "i'm gonna go pick up a NV5929u today!"iCanHasQBN
