do you really wanna see gateway try to pull an apple? me neither. they do what they do and it works for them. they sell to the average houshold consumer: your mom, grandma or other flavor of non-tech savvy stereotype. they sell quantity, not quality.- basically walmart shoppers are their demographicSteveJobs
- no. i agree with all that. but the above is what makes apple better IMO. they give more of a shit about details.iCanHasQBN
- you can buy ipads at wallmartformed

LOL.. I found out today as I was looking at laptops and netbooks..
Who pays the price for new Mac Book Air is seriously nuts...
New Acer TimelineX series:
Acer TimelineX 1830T
It features HD-capable i7 or i5 cpu, 1,366 by 768-pixel displays, HDMI output, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, gigabit Ethernet, and an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam alongside 4gb of ram and 320gb hard drive, 6 hours battery life. Windows 7 Home Premium and offer multi-gesture trackpads.
I was looking at fully loaded 11.6" (i7, 1366x768, HDMI, WiFi-N, 4gb ram, 500gb hard drive 7200 rpm)
$899 with i7 processor and $599 with i5 processor.
Put shit seriously in perspective..and these look pretty neat too... sure not as thin as Mac Book Air.. but god damn
and the new Acer laptops hardly look clunky and whatever Apple fanboys are using to describe them.
This puts things in perspective.
- you could say - who pays the price for the [insert apple computer product] is seriously nuts.Hombre_Lobo_2
- If I could run OSX on that 2nd one, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.Andrew_D
- how much with a SSD?akrok
- how much does it weigh? what materials are it made from? how is it designed? how does it feel?inteliboy
- does it have a trackpad/multitouch? why is it made from plastic panels? etc etc.inteliboy

- asus isn't quite as big as apple. correct me if i'm wrong...SteveJobs
- meant to say 'when they RUN something as nice as OSX'. sorry. Windows is a deal-breaker.iCanHasQBN
- There you go... it goes to the same old OSX is better than Windows bullshit.. that's what the response is when all other hardware arguments are shattered to Apple fanboys.Boz
- hardware arguments are shattered to Apple fanboys. Here's a hint.. Windows 7 is a much better OS than OSX.Boz
- nothing was shattered. you just keep ignoring things that matter, Boz.kpl
- boz, its a combination of BOTH the OS AND the hardware.iCanHasQBN

One of the best things about this macbook air is the speed it accesses the drive, and no fan, completely silent... brill.
I have a samsung netbook which is very small but the keyboard is shite and you know you're on a netbook... but the air, you don't really feel any different to being on a normal laptop
- no fan? that seems like a bad thing, esp considering how skinny it is.instrmntl

Granted us 'designers' hate on this thing but there is obviously a market for it. People like my girlfriend - who only use basic productivity software and browse the internet - really need nothing more than a machine like this. I think coupled with the attractive, lightweight design this would appeal to a very large demographic.
But seriously - how fucking good is apple at creating 'desire' - this thing is sharp!
- eh...thought
- troll much?d_rek
- people like that should get an 11" netbook for $300. no reason this should be 1kmonNom
- exactly, and my old boss, who couldn't use photoshop...robulation
- BUT wanted to appear design-savvy and cool...think he just about knew iphotorobulation

Just ordered one to replace my current one.

Just got the 11 inch one, bloody brilliant, it is tiny, yet has a great keyboard, I have a samsung N310 but the keyboard is just too small to use seriously... this allows for netbook sized portability with a keyboard just like my macbook pro or wireless keyboard...
only downside is I have to put XP on it with IE6 as using it to test jQuery sites :(

Why do so many so-called "designers" fail to realise that multiple products exist because different users have different needs and priorities. All the Apple haters take Apple as a personal affront simply because Apple aren't targeting their needs. If you want cheap clunky crap go get a Dell or an Acer, no one is stopping you.
Apple's exploitation of their customer base is as thorough, ruthless and efficient as the Native American exploitation of the Bison, nothing is overlooked, every means of extracting revenue is explored. If they were a fascist dictatorship, they would be both terrifying and admirable.

you first part of the argument is exactly what's infuriating about an average Apple brainless user. There is nothing "clunky" about Dell or other manufacturers..
Apple has created this notion that their products are superior to everyone else, when they are not. I am a Mac user and a PC user and I have had and still have both Macs and PCs in my house, have used mac notebooks and PC notebooks. There's nothing superior with Apple products.. The only thing they do admirably well is package the same hardware and ideas into a slimmer and visually more appealing product. It doesn't make it better.. Actually quite the contrary, in many cases they sacrifice performance and the bleeding edge in hardware to fit it into a slimmer form factor.
Their hardware doesn't last longer... I've had so many issues with laptops for example, and I've never had issues with Dell laptops on the other hand.
The perception that Apple makes higher quality products is only their PR and the fact that most news sites and gadget sites are Mac fanboys so nobody makes a big fuss about the stuff that's wrong.. And we all know, Apple will NEVER EVER admit there's a problem.. if they can hold it under the table and lie, deceive, blame everyone else in order to justify their own flaws they will.
That's what makes that "apple hardware is superior" idea.
The fact that users have opinions like you just noted is what makes me personally pissed off.. That superiority complex that actually has no connection with reality. It's all hype.

"All the Apple haters..."
"If you want cheap clunky..."Peter - Nothing here is a refutation of my first para. You protest too much, and if you think I am brainless I take that as a compliment.comicsans

The i3 mobile chip has an integrated GPU inside the chip itself, it does not require any other chipset on the motherboard.
The reason Apple went with C2D is because they had tons of unused motherboards from the unsold Macbook Airs of last generation. Which is why they are using the same, slow as fuck Samsung SSD with less performance than 5400rpm hard drives (and no TRIM).
- see this article: http://arstechnica.c…kpl
- also, i3 w/ gpu < c2d w/ nvidiakpl

I'm wondering how well it would run serato. Because that would be perfect for DJ'ing. Could fit the thing in my record crate with my vinyls.
- how would you install?thought
- go to serato.com and hit the download button on the home page ffs.kona
- is that really going to be the basis for your argument?!? lol.kona
- the idea that we still need physical discs to function is absurd.iCanHasQBN
- 2gb ram and 64gb storage sounds small... probably need a built-to-order with more for bothkpl
- Upgrade the RAM sure. Don't need much for an internal disk space. External HD for the music library.soundsinsilence
- with not enough ports for external soundcard you might have to drag some adapters besides the serat hardware thoughMiguex
