    More nonsense...

Created an illy file, needed to export loads of pngs from it. All goes well...

Next day open up illy, go to recent files to open my project file...

    no..no...
    no, illy why?

Why would I want to see all the past 20 pngs's I exported in the recent files list?

Why would I want to open a png I exported in illy?

Do you have to be so dumb illy?

  • Nairn0

Why does Illy continually ignore which default printer I have set up?

I have a couple of instances of the same print driver, but for different things. I set up the default and routinely, Illy just ignores that and because the print driver interfaces are the same and I switch between them, I only find out when I go to the machine and hit Go! only to realise it's either not doing anything at all, or trying to do some previously-submitted job. If I happen to not notice and walk away, then Boomph! I ruin some material.

Get it together, Illy, you slag.

    • If it did it ALL the time, I'd account for that, but it doesn't - it just occasionally decides not to. I think it's sentient, and hates me.Nairn
    • I did wonder whether Illy was getting smart and saving print profiles in documents, which would be handy.. but this last instance was a brand new file I'd made.Nairn

I've said this many times before, and mentioned it in the Adobe feedback website.... but again it drives me insane this am:

If you have a single object with only a Fill, or only a Stroke - Illustrator please have the sense to switch the focus of the colour selector thing to that fill or stroke colour. So that when you want to quickly change a colour of an item be it in swatches panel, color panel or from a color saved in libraries - it changes that stroke or fill. NOT add a fill or stroke to an item that otherwise didn't have a fill or stroke.

Fuck sake it is driving me insane and causing one more click / keyboard press due to a process no one needs.

    • I hate that Indesign always thinks you want to change the colour of the text box rather than the text! Sorry off topic.Hayzilla
    • Adobe... making presumptions on how designers work, without asking them.shapesalad
    • I had a mental fit about this today.Chimp
    • I always say don't make it one way or another. Create a setting in preferences to switch back and forth as needed or wanted.CyBrainX
    • retire, brodoesnotexist
    • It's such a waste of time and @Hayzilla that will eventually drive me to throw my computer out the window.mapleT
    • Yo press x to switch focus. but one line of code would save a tonne of frustration.shapesalad
    • when i retire i'm going to get an old hard copy of illy off eBay, the box at least - jump up and down on it, then burn it.shapesalad

I don't know how I did this, but somehow I rotated the artboard a couple of degrees. As you can see, it also rotated the guides and artwork. All new art is drawn at this rotation too.

Anyone see this before or know how to fix it? I can undo to when I created the document, but it's still rotated. So weird.

    • View->Reset Rotate Viewuan
    • you also can double click on the rotate view hand tool to reset https://imgur.com/7C…kingsteven
    • Thank you!
I still don't know how I did this accidentally. haha
      monospaced
    • i have it turned off for the trackpad on my macbook but shift+space is the cmd for that new rotate tool, easily done!kingsteven
    • thanks again!monospaced
    • It's an interesting feature. I can see how that could come in handy every once in a while.CyBrainX

I love how Adobe have a bug with length/size of the RGB sliders on they Recolour artwork antique panel:

    • it gets a little longer after you click the hamburger menu and switch mode. but even so, why not make that panel full width?shapesalad
    • It would be awesome if they had a curves/levels colour adjustment panel.shapesalad
    • I hate this interface so much I stopped using ages ago.CyBrainX
  • utopian1

I love how you bring a vector file into Photoshop and it automatically scales with the wrong proportionals. And then when you try to export the file, it also scaled at the wrong size. This has only been happening for 10+ years...fuck you Adobe.

    • i open vector file in AI and then I copy + paste file into photoshop.hotroddy
    • Yeah. Paste as a smart object.CyBrainX
    • 10 years doing it wrong utopian ;-)oey_oey
    • I do copy and paste vector based object from Illustrator directly into Photoshop.utopian
  • monNom0

Area type flowed across multiple columns does not match between preview and outlines mode (Ctrl+Y). How do you even screw this up?

  • akiersky1

When TF did clipping paths become the default way to create icons. I've been fighting those damn things for years, they muck up using the vectors in any other tool, and make SVG output garbage.

Simplify your damn icons to the absolute minimum number of objects. Makes it easier to edit, smaller to output, and you'll be a better person.

    • I always end up making a transparent bounding box in an AI doc that's the same size as the PSD and use that to copy/pasta
the scale thing is a pain.
      PhanLo
    • this didn't happen in cs3hans_glib
    • What PhanLo said. I've been doing that since the mid 90s.CyBrainX
    • Because it’s snapping to pixels or half pixels?nb
  • shapesalad-3

Well it's been a stress few week for old shapesalad... why's that? Oh... I've not had to use Illustrator, until today...

I've said it many times, requested it with adobe's feedback thing... for the love of god, add one line of if then code and switch the watch selection thingy from fill to stroke if I select an object that only has a fill on it or only has a stroke on it. One simple if then. So that when I select an object and quickly go to eyedropper the colour etc, it doesn't FUCKING add a fill to a stoke only object, or add a FUCKING stroke to a fill only object.

    Fuck with this shit.

Yes thanks for adding another step to the workflow Adobe, press X ok.. great.. have a nice day you cunts at adobe.

    • In my rage I didn't proof read, apologies.shapesalad
    • what the fuck does any of this mean?hans_glib
    • it means extra clicks to remove the new stroke/fill added for no good reason

multiply that with dozens of objects in an illustration...
      grafician
    • yes, that ^ thank you. Most softwares, concept is, select object, can adjust object.shapesalad
    • Illustrator = select a shape with only a stroke, try to adjust it's colour, adds a fill as focus was left on fill in tool bar swatch thingy.shapesalad
    • doesn't every graphic app do this - colour whatever the focus is on, be it stroke or fill. simply select which you want to work on before you change colour.hans_glib
    • illustrator sits on what the focus is at the left tool bar panel, and ignores if a shape has a stroke or fill - i'm asking for 1 line of code to do that for me.shapesalad
  • oey_oey0

I don't really hate it but here it goes:

Paste guides in new layer and...AI crashes.

    Solution:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustra…

    So far not working :-/

  • hans_glib0

i really like illustrator, it's still the boss app for me.

but that's because i'm still using cs3, which is a great version. i dread the day my old mac bites the dust.

sadly affinity designer doesn't cut it at all in comparison.

  • Nairn-1

    ^
No, it doesn't, sadly. Frankly, I loathe the Affinity workflow 'philosophy'.

I saw a question elsewhere about a really simple thing the poster needed doing in Affinity - expanding the outline of an astandard shape to make it thicker, then having the outer thickness as the stroke. Super simply in Illy (Click object, Offset Path, done - I do it so much, I have it shortcutted), but I thought "Heck, I can do that in Designer and it'll force me to learn it a little..". Ha. Nope. After about 10 minutes I sacked it off, swearing at the interface. I'm sure it's super simple (surely? It's a super basic function), but I couldn't see it.

I've forced myself to suffer Affinity Photo, but Im very close to digging out an old copy of Photoshop as Affinity drives me nuts - like, some of the things it doesn't just aren't immediate, and so my flow gets borked when I'm wquestioning whether i've actually done the thing I'm waiting to do the next step on. Frustrating.

    • Also - HOW THE FUCK do you do multiple marquee selections in Photo?! You can do a boolean subtraction from a marquee selection, but not addition?!Nairn
    • Sorry to say this but are you sure you know your workflows well enough?

Or maybe that "old dog, new tricks" situation...
      grafician
    • oddly i don't miss photoshop at all. photo does all ineed, better and faster.hans_glib
    • in answer to your questine, it's a bt clunky but at the top of the window there are some buttons to select: https://imgur.com/a/…hans_glib
    • Oh another jewel of insight from grafician - clearly I don't as I don't use those software, but they're opaque and clunky, which is my complaint.Nairn
    • No their not. As proven by my posts in reply to your questions.

You're just an old dog with no patience for new tricks buddy.
      grafician
    • Btw it took me about half-hour to learn how to use Figma at first try, so yeah...grafician
    • 'as proven' says the person who uses his own arrogance as evidence of.. something.Nairn
    • I just tried to help you out buddy. Don't blame the software if you don't take the time to learn it first ;)grafician
    • Or you know stick to what you know and forget learning new apps if that's the case, instead of complaining you don't know how to use themgrafician
    • Anyway, you're welcome ;)grafician
    • You can learn at all ages. Just go into things more opened minded.shapesalad
    • And be prepared to fail/make mistakes and learn from them. As you did years ago, when you first learnt some design softwares.shapesalad
    • I learn other things. I just need Illy and PS to do the basic shit I've lightspeed muscle memory programmed in to for, from over 25 years of usage.Nairn
    • I bought Affinity to a) support them, b) get rid of PS (a mistake) and c) support clients who i've recommended buy Designer. I fail a bit at the latter... .Nairn
    • Designer is anyway useless to me as it doesn't support stroke thicknesses that are compatible with laser cutting directly. Which, given what I do... .Nairn
    • What a fucking condescending asshole.monospaced
    • Shapesalad, or grafician? ;)Nairn
  • grafician-1

    ^

So Nairn, if I understand corectly, you just expand the stroke from the Layer top menu, then add another stroke, expland that too and so on and so forth...

  • grafician-5

    ^

    @Nairn about your second question:

Click the marquee, click the add substract whatever buttons top bar, then draw with the marquee

you can hold Option to quickly switch

    Anything else want answered?

    • Well, that works. But it it's clunky.

      Thanks, hans :)
      Nairn
    • Here you go old boy, many tutorials to learn Affinity https://www.youtube.…grafician
    • It’s clunky because using shift key would be the industry standard for adding to a selection. It’s ubiquitous for computers in general.monospaced
    • I said Option NOT Shift!

Holding Shift constrains to 1:1 ratio as expected.
      grafician
    • Holding shift AFTER a selection and adding again, should add more selections though.Nairn
    • Or option or whatever. I'm a PC.Nairn

  • sted0

    @nb there is a knife2 ahaha

    • The knife I know. I always assumed the pencil was just some shit old leftover tool. Never did anything with it, always just used the pen.nb
  • fisheye0

Me!! I use it only to do shit that InDesign doesn't

  • shapesalad0

    Pathfinder > Intersect.

Why does it always crop the shape as expected, but recolour it to the secondary object it's cropping against?

I'm constantly have to make sure I keep a copy of there shape off to the side so i can grab the colour back from it.

    • yes pathfinders have been messed up for a while. I usually option/alt click them so no destruction.MrT
  • shapesalad0

For some reason, I can drag and drop an image, png into illy.

Works if I screen-grab the image and paste it in - mac is doing that as a png. FFS.
