rather mediocre story and characters...
But it doesnt really matter watching this in 3d was quite the experience, i was more focused on how well the details. I guess that sounds kinda bad - but i havent seen anything quite like this before technically wise.
That opening shot was great where they are flying in/out of their pods - just the details wow
- well the details were doneattentionspan
- ok the details.spraycan

that was intense. i think my eyes need therapy. i wish real life was that 3D.
- I came out of the film wishing I lived there, and I'm not a tree-hugger.juhls

if your giving a negative crit on how this movie looks your obviously a jaded jackass...if you showed this film to a group twenty years ago im sure their brains would start melting and drip from their ears!

I don't mind films like this as long as there is a decent story. Terminator 2, for instance, a commercial Hollywood flick (by the same guy) that had a well written script. There was suspense, character development, you weren't 100% sure of what was gonna happen at the end. The special effects were good but even without them, it would still be worthwhile.
Now imagine Avatar without any special effects. Sure, you could say the effects are the whole point, but after 4 or 5 films like this (and judging by the previews many more are on the way) we'll all be sick of it. It will come down to imagination and story telling in the end like always, two points this film was a bit lacking on.
- It wasn't lacking in graphics imagination, which, as you said, is the point.juhls
- Maybe, but it seemed more like Cameron just went to some animators and said make me some cool looking aliens rather than having his own vision.ukit
- than having his own creative visionukit
- The aliens (a lot of them) looked similar to the ones added in to the reworked Star Wars films.ukit
- I wouldn't know.juhls
- Or so I hear;)ukit
- a film ain't good because its special effects are good, a film needs to tell something not just a pocahontas sci-fi story.spraycan
- That's not for you to decide. If a film is advertising its graphics more, then people are going for that reason. Not for the story.juhls
- you dont know anything about cinema, i dont want to argue with you. you should go and see Pocahontas.

although impressed by the "effects" (3d) I don't feel that is was anything significant, now i have to admit to it being some time (a decade, at least 3652 days since my last 3d movie) but was my imagination that much greater when i was 21-22?
i doubt it, but i remember enjoying 3d movies then if not much earlier as a child and believing there to be some depth to them and not a blue red mess that our parent would complained giving them headaches.
I saw several very sharp images in layers on top of one another and was baffled at why the text hung out there floating during the video diaries but aside from those details you never see anything affected by depth of field in a natural manner. either a layer was in focus or it wasn't.
i took my glasses off several times to look at the rgb splits and was mostly amazed with the rich color capable of coming through those recyclable glasses being worn in the dark
- 'that our parents would complain about"version3
- Good point - those glasses are pretty crap. I'm sure it looks better with technology that theatres probably can't affordukit
- i'd pay more for a ticket if there were better glasses somewhereversion3
- Maybe that;s the plot of Avatar 2 -quest for the better 3D Glassesukit
