The reviews seems to all say something like "The trailer makes this movie look like a giant turd, but it's actually really good."
I don't know if that means it's really good, or it's just not nearly as crappy as the trailer makes it look.

To give Cameron the benefit of the doubt and after reading the Wired interview, it sounds like releasing a regular trailer for Avatar is like printing out a website. Different animals.
- Hmph, interesting analogy, but I see what you mean.CygnusZero4
- It does look kind of lame in the trailers with those stupid aliens, but Im willing to give it a shot.CygnusZero4
- The aliens turned me off too, but srsly, give that article a read if you can. Really relit my interest.harlequino
- The dude is really chasing down a different dragon than the rest of the film industry.harlequino
- I totally respect what he's doing, he's a great filmmaker, I just cant stand how those aliens look.CygnusZero4

I think it has a shot at glory... Cameron is kinda hit or miss in my book.
But the native alien race.. they look so fucking cartoonish. Terrible.
I understand that some marketing machine somewhere said "Yo, we gotta be able to market the shit out of this shit to fucking children yo." But man do those aliens look stupid.

I'm going to see it, fuck I'm pretty sure I've been to shittier movies before so I'm in for a ride

compared to wolverine...?
- That was garbage. This has to be better than that. Cameron actually has some talent, and he was very passionate about this movie.CygnusZero4

- Wolverine was a waste of time. I heard this could have been 30 min shorter but I'm gonna go.graphiknature

visuals > story. 'nuff said

While I think it looks complete plop, Jonathan Ross - whose opinion on film I respect - absolutely loved it, other than the rubbish dialog.

looks like a pile of rhino shit.
- right, but it's in 3Dukit
- 3D Rhino shit, all in your facecalculator

I also read somewhere on how some are comparing it to what we did to the Native Americans back in the day.
- The story? or the act itself of releasing this film?harlequino
- ba dump bumpharlequino
- lol, the story.morilla
- it's that story... that you see in every movie. man/technology/progr... vs. nature/beauty/soulscarabin

"The story? or the act itself of releasing this film?"
LOL

morilla, the trailer immediately reminded me of Pocahontas. So maybe those people are on to something. Anyway, I'd be interested to see this in 3D.

they look like the small fu*kers from the movie arthur and the invisibles just bigger.
- quamb0
aye - saw it.
kinda reminded me of the feeling when I saw jurrassic park as a kid. It's a full on spectacle really... more then anything I've seen before anyway. And the action/narrative, even though relatively simple, actually work together and have weight, unlike most of the bs hollywood shite spewed forth over the last few decades. Cameron knows what he's doing.
though gotta say a lot of you won't like it. It seems like the kinda of film that will be easy to hate on.
ps - scarabin didn't you work on the trailers or posters or something? thought you'd have gone to the screenings.
- nah, it would have been a fun project to work on, thoughscarabin

First things first. Blue or not, the realistic nature of the CGI is out of control. Out of fucking control. quamb is right, it's a full on spectacle and sort of reaffirms James Cameron as James Cameron. Say what you want but he works toward a singular vision. Yes, the story is simple, the New-Age undertones can get a bit tiresome (I get it already, we're fucking up the planet... fuck) and the Christian Riese Lassen use of colour can make the brain want to interpret it as a cartoon on occasion. But on the flipside, I did get sucked in and I did enjoy it. Sort of felt like the Abyss (but we're hanging with the creatures in the water this time), more than Alien.
- Noones arguing the quality of the CGI, its the terrible design of the aliens.CygnusZero4
- what? the aliens look awesomescarabin

My mother can't wait to see it. That usually rings the alarm bells for me.

I really can't stand computer generated characters, so I won't go see this movie... they just never get the facial expressions completely right - and this slight difference to a real face makes it totally creepy for me to watch... *shudders*

Janne, surprisingly even De Volkskrant gave it 5/5 stars!

I just saw it. It was fantastic visually. The aliens were great, HOWEVER, the military characters were soooo cartoonishly cliched that you wish the second half of the movie was about the aliens and anything else.
