I always think that if I ever had to train a replacement I would charge lots of money to do it.

BTW this happens in advertising also.
I worked an account where the whole creative was outsourced to India. The lead on the account had to go to India to train. They told him that 'free travel to India' as reward. Both of us didnt see it that way.
He was gone soon after.
- yeah... a project i designed was outsourced for 10 PP x 80 slides.alicetheblue

Sorry to hear that. This whole outsourcing to India really gets me mad too. The government should tax the shit out of companies that want to ship all the jobs oversees (especially right now!) . From an American perspective, it's no different to me than importing everything into our country from China. Sure it's great on the consumer end that we can get electronics and all kinds of other goods on the super cheap, but the benefits do not outweigh the negatives. Plus the savings are oftentimes not passed onto the consumer, especially in regards to outsourcing jobs to India. I guarantee you won't see IBM dropping the prices because of the money they are going to save from this. We all need to stop being so shortsighted. Pretty soon you will go to a Burger King drive through and be connected to some guy/girl in India who will take your order. They will be getting paid like 50 cents an hour and Burger King will be able to make even more money. It's all about money in the end, nothing else.
Okay I'm done ranting....
- hey buddyflashbender

Look, I'm sorry for your brother's loss... but
While I think the southpark episode above is hilarious..
is a common misconception that people confuse"They took our jobs" with "Our company has given them our jobs"
Indians, or whoever it is that got your job, is not at fault here, they are humans just like you, looking to a way to survive in this world, and when you see the conditions (some not all) they lived in for most of their life, you would understand, its not their fault to train so hard to learn what you know and more, with 1/2 of the luxuries we have here, and for what? they get 1/4 or less or your current salary. How is that fair to them? It's not their fault, it's your company that decided to exploit people somewhere else, it doesn't matter where.
So don't say "brother lost a job to india"
Say: Cheap ass ibm decided to replace my brother, by exploiting people somewhere else.- this is the correct answervisionary
- I agree - its IBM - but your wording wouldn't fit into the subject line ;-)alicetheblue

That sucks but at the same time, I'm skeptical about whether an Indian design company can ever produce to the quality of an American or Canadian one, for an American or Canadian audience. Just like an American company would probably not do too great a job designing for an Indian audience.
By the time that happens, Indian designers will be fat and complacent and they will outsource back to us.
- It'll all be Bollywood versions. ;)harlequino
- Everyone watches Hollywood movies, they could easily do your job better than you.zarkonite

I've worked with flash files from an indian contractor. They were absolute shit.
- Meeklo0
Why would indian or asian company won't be able to, and I quote you, "can ever produce to the quality of an american/ canadian one, for an american audience"
The made in america days are way behind, these days pretty much everything is made somewhere else, (grab the closest object you have on your hand and tell me where it's made).
American companies force themselves into other countries, and train these people to speak english with american accent, they feed them american tv channels, and fuel them with starbucks/ mc donalds, in order for this to happen. That's what globalization means, if you don't like this to happen, all you need to do is stop spending money in anything that is made somewhere else, these corporations might be basing most of their actions with greed in mind, but they are also RE-acting to consumer demand.
Yes, we all jump out really high to warn friends about the "blood diamonds" when it comes to engagement rings, but we are all collecting sneakers and upgrading cellphones at an insane speed.
If people supported american made only, in the first place. outsourcing would not be a problem for anyone, so what do you expect? we are all replaceable, we like to think we are, but we are not.

the might take our life... but they will never.....

There's a difference between mass producing goods in a factory (and developing a website maybe isn't all that different in some ways), and understanding American culture, design and typography to the level of being able to produce something that rivals what American ad agencies can do.
Indian design firms can knock out a website and maybe even develop a site well, but can they produce high quality advertising/ marketing/ design? If so, let's see it, I haven't yet.
