- Ha- yup, always used a fish cooker outside, as this has happened on at least half of my brews.bulletfactory
- the only reason this happened was because I was trying to post a picture on instagram and stopped paying attention to it. brewing outside is great but sometimes its just too cold here in new englanddito

- looks like you should take over the family business/farmfooler
- take it over! that looks awesome.instrmntl
- yeah i wish. don't have the means, unfortunately. it's not a family business really. more a (rather) expensive hobby.sine
- but it's not set in stone. he might get a smaller piece of land and keep distilling.sine

Does anyone steep their grain or hops? Seems like it would make your beer fairly weak.

So I was anticipating to brew a new batch this weekend. Got this nice yeast starter kit with 2l erlenmeyer flask, DME and some yeast fertilizer. Pitched the yeast in 1800ml H20 combined with 2c of DME and pinch of the yeast food. Holy shit. I had yeast all over the place. Somehow the thing took off while i was asleep. All kinds of yeast stuff was oozing out from underneath my foil cap. luckily i put a rubberband over it otherwise... so i just let it bubble away... 35 hrs later the bubbling has become less, there is a visible layer of yeast on the bottom (probably 2x more than before) and a mess everywhere. Put the sucker in the fridge, will take it out and try to double it again come thursday so ideally i'll be pitching double the amount, healthy activated yeast come the brew day. what a mess... Wasn't counting with this.

Bottled my Pliny clone yesterday. A lot of things went wrong up to the bottling, but seems like the beer turned out fine. I can say that it is rather hopy. Now comes the hard part - waiting 2 weeks to get a taste of the end result... Next batch? Maybe a Coffee IPA or something a little darker and heavier, although I'm fine with the IPA for now. Maybe I'll try out that steam beer again? Who knows.
MMhhhh

Going to try attempt my first homebrew in May when I get a free weekend. My friend gave me a never-before-used kit that makes upto 2 gallons / growlers worth of beer. All I need to get is some cleaning supplies and fresh ingredients.
Anyone have tips / suggestions before I embark on my first homebrew? Maybe some common mistakes to avoid? First time errors? That type of stuff?
- watch for: boil over!
tip: you can never be too clean
tip: fill into growlers.... who the fuck drinks 1 beer :)bulletfactory - Sterilize everything that comes in contact with your wort. Watch out for boilovers, especially when adding hops during boil.tymeframe
- Turn the heat off whenst adding the malt. You don't want to scorch the malt on the bottom of the boiler.dasohr

Just opened one of the Pliny Clones last night. Yummy yummy. Can't believe I made that... It looks like Pliny, smells like Pliny and tastes like Pliny, and although I contaminated the entire batch during racking, it turned out A+. Definitely recommend the Pliny kit form morebeer.com.
Also received my "Quad Kit" and essentials + 2 new recipe kits from Northern Brewers today. Can't wait to get brewing this week.
Beer. Mmhhhhhhhh
