constitutional rights only matter when it comes to white christians.
funny how certain things are in poor taste to them and other things aren't.
say like when the south flies a confederate flag, think people of color have a problem with that? na.. who gives a fuck.- ..and that's the double truth Ruth!Mimio

Someone should tell these yokels that the largest stockholder in News Corp (i.e. Fox News, WSJ) after the Murdoch family is a Saudi Arabian prince.

Well I'd like to see the Greek Orthodox church, St. Nicholas Cathedral get rebuilt first. It's been almost 10 years since it was destroyed by the towers crashing down and NYC has given them grief over the location, the size (approximately the same as this mosque - 24k sq ft.) etc. Port authority officials haven't met with church officials for over a year now.
Inequity sucks. This isn't about freedom of religion. NYC obviously has zoning issues with St. Nicholas, yet none with this construction project. And one thing to take in mind is an overwhelming majority of Americans don't want it there. Not just Republicans or conservatives. Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, you name it are speaking out about the common sense here. Even Harry Reid said recently he thinks it's a bad idea. You can't just parse it down to hey you stupid bigots. That line is old.
- What percentage of Americans want to change the constitution over it?Mimio
- how. explain.zenmasterfoo
- That's why we are a republic and not a direct democracy, sometimes popular opinion is stupidukit
- no argument there. but that doesn't win the argument.zenmasterfoo
- There is no reason argument, just flag waving anger. I mean, I understand it, but it's not helpful.ukit
- And of course the Republicans dive right in and use it as a campaign issue...makes me depressed to live in this countryukit
- By discriminating against a religious group out of service to another ideology/religion.Mimio

Yeah right, because that's all we need. More money going to organized fucking religion.
- please. dumb argument.zenmasterfoo
- No. actually it's not. It's a valid argument if you really knew how much scratch those crooks have.cerberus
- does that matter? is that jealousy? organized government a thing to hate too? Corporations? Small Business? where do you stop?zenmasterfoo
- business? where do you stop?zenmasterfoo
- I stop with common fucking sense. Organized religions and corporations are one in the same.cerberus

@zenmasterfoo
So what? Let them figure it out in New York. I mean, fine, register your personal disapproval, but unless you live in the area and pay taxes, what right does anyone have to dictate to New Yorkers what to do?
What annoys me is it's the same jingoistic bullshit that Republicans used to swindle us into invading Iraq, or to pass the Patriot Act taking away our rights and our privacy.
It's pure craven cynicism on their part, and it shows that the right really hasn't changed its stripes despite all the new rhetoric about "freedom" and small government.

@ukit
I agree. It should all be a local issue. But look, Obama put his foot in it by making comment at the Ramadan dinner he hosted. Then he tried to backtrack the next day. That made it national. Every news outlet picked it up. Every party has spoken on it. Most are all opposed. What I can't understand is why you think this is a topic generated by Conservatives, specifically the Republicans. Read the paper, look at the news, listen to radio. Ask someone (a new yorker even) who's not a yes man to your political views what they think. Then ask them what party affiliation they have.
It all matters. Everything. We are the country we are for exactly this. Voices have weight. You comment on DC affairs I'm sure. Maybe how DC voters have limited or no representation. How's that make you feel? Ever voice an opinion on that? It's a DC thing right?

Limbaugh sarcastically suggests that we build a Hindu Temple next to Pearl Harbor and a Mosque next to the Pentagon... without realizing that Shinto, not Hinduism, is the most common religion in Japan, and there is already a Mosque inside the Pentagon and a Shinto temple next to Pearl Harbor.
He and his people are buffoons.
- His researchers are famously ignorant. Read Al Franken's book.Mimio

+ its not even a fucking mosque. its a community center with a prayer room.

"You can't just parse it down to hey you stupid bigots. That line is old." So what evidence, aside from the fact that it is a masque (well, mostly a cultural center, but i digress) and that it's 2 blocks away from ground zero has been presented to show that this is a "victory mosque" and that it's patrons will be thumbing their nose at 9/11 from it's front stoop?
i personally haven't seen any or seen any presented. So that leads me to believe that the people who are protesting this most vehemently and with the most vitriol are making generalizations and assumptions based on the race/religion/creed of the people behind the proposed mosque. The definition of bigotry is intolerance of those who hold ideals different from your own.
So how then is this NOT bigotry fueling some (probably most, though not all) of these people?- victory? like 9.11 wasn't a republicon set up anyway! We all know that.74LEO
- ehem...ok......geesh...zenmasterfoo
- The same people who murdered thousands of Indigenous Americans74LEO
- zenmasterfoo0
@locaussloth
Because that in itself is a generalization. Crying Bigot, racist whatever each time to win your argument only dilutes down whatever point you're trying to make. Is it bigotry for the families of 9/11 victims who oppose it? I wouldn't say that but I don't know. I know it's not for me. But I can only say trust me and hope you believe me.
- It is prejudice on it's face. They don't want Muslims worshipping near Ground Zero.DrBombay

And you're blind if you don't think this is an issue ginned up by conservative groups. It's the same BS they've been pulling since the 60s - bringing up racially charged issues that don't matter a bit in terms of real life impact but serve to divide us and help them win elections. Only now with Muslims as a stand in for black people.
I mean, really, Obama made it an issue? It was already an issue before he commented on it. He actually did an admirable thing by speaking up and defending the people building the center against these xenophobic attacks.
- we're at an impasse. I have to work. good to argue with you man.zenmasterfoo
- hey, sorry to vent but...racism makes me angry (and I don't even follow politics much anymore).ukit
- that's ok. no harm done. I like debating and you do it well. Be well.zenmasterfoo
- ukit0
As for this sentiment of, that's what America's like, we have this national conversation and we all weight in...well fine, if it's a meaningful argument. And not just a hateful one that doesn't even make any sense.
Yeah, how wonderful that we can all weigh in and declare our hatred of an entire race/ religion!
- TheBlueOne0
Pure, unadulterated political posturing which is this week's Shiny that the GOP dangles infront of the press who jump over themselves to cover to prove that they aren't "liberal". What happened with the whole racist NAACP thing and Andrew Breitbart? I'm sorry I lost the bit about where the media followed up pointing out how Breitart manufactured that brouhaha. Oh, wait..they didn't follow up. No they just jumped to the next "make believe story" - the Outrage and Vapors Over the Mosque.
Newsflash:
A) There's two mosques there already on "Sacred Ground": http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/1…
B) Other places that stand on this "Sacred Ground":
Huh. How about that.
How about the next time in Alabama I get to tell some Johnny Reb to take the fucking Confederate Flag off his car because it offends me that he flies it despite the fact the confederacy took up armed rebellion against the United States Constitution and killed a few million people, and he doesn't get to kick my ass and the local Barney Fife won't look the other way, then you fucking hayseeds can tell us New Yorkers what we can do in our city.
Fuck off.
And it's all a made up argument anyway that you fucking rubes fall for like clockwork.
- BonSeff0
if i was on the other side of the argument i think i would be more pissed that nyc hasn't done shit with ground zero in the last 9 years.
where's the building in a shape of an eagle? we need a place like that to buy gold coins
- ukit0
Really TBO I think it's the Fox influence on the media...they are all getting their asses kicked by Fox so they think they need to carry the same stories.
And what does Fox do with their earnings? Turn right around and donate it to the Republican party.

Corporatism at its crudest and most blatant. How long before we have a Berlusconi-type character as President who just directly owns the media?
- Fair & Balanced. They give a cool million to one side. I expect they'll be giving a million to the Dems to then?TheBlueOne

And all Murdoch cares about is his business interests - primarily taxation for his tax bracket and deregulation. He'd flip to the Dems in a second if they were aligned with his interests.
