Imagine if people wanted to stop a Christian organization from opening a center in NYC. All I did was change the players around and it sounds absurd. The Government is not supposed to take the side of a specific faith. Case closed.

Now, people can be opposed to whatever they want, that is the beauty of America. You can stand out in the street holding misspelled signs and all of that. But other people also have the right to have an opinion about their motivations.

My opinion on this is that anyone against this center existing near ground zero thinks all muslims are terrorist sympathizers. You can disagree but some of the signs I am seeing prove my point.

You know, I actually do understand the sentiment and feelings of those involved who find the idea disrespectful. I get it.

My problem is that a) it's Constitutionally protected, rigth there in the very first fucking amendment and b) the people that are getting the vapors over it are always the ones who argue that the democrats/liberals are always governing on "feelings" and "sentimentality" and that we have to abide by the "strict constitution".

Uh-huh. Well the law, the highest of the land by the by, basically says fuck all to your sentimentality, that their right to build a place of worship anywhere they please is pretty much guaranteed, and if we haven't sacrificed fighting for that for 200+ years, what has all the brouhaha been about?

The right for you to practice your inane idea of Bible Belt Christianity, your right to call my Catholic faith "devil worship" (and I have been told this by some Baptists & Jehovah Witnesses to my face) is just as protected as it is for these people of one of the three major Abrahamic religions to worship as they damn please.

And I love how you Republicans get all whiny. You're great at whiny.

Man up, get a fucking spine.

It's fun watching Americans revel in their stupidity.

You can say as much as you want that the "Mosque At Ground Zero" but it doesn't make it so. Because it's no at Ground Zero. It's two blocks away. If anyone with any understanding of the geography of lower Manhattan would know, that means it might as well be ten miles away. As posted above, in between the place where the community center is going to be built and Sacred Ground is a strip club and an off track betting establishment. I suppose those somehow honor the fallen on that day in a way a place of worship cannot. But I digress, as Fox News and the usual rightwing blowhards have inplanted The Big Lie in the brains of their clueless followers that the "mosque" is "at" Ground Zero.

    It's not.

The same way that Shirley Sherrod was not, in fact, a racist.

But why let facts get in the way of your domination of what the country's media deems is important to discuss.

So go ahead, make hay about it. It seems to be important to you.

And where's jazx posting some sort of fancifully drawn cartoon or photoshopped image of a muslin? You know the type that invokes a hearty belly laugh in deathboy?

Carl Gatto, a Republican state lawmaker, along a federally funded highway project in Wasilla, Alaska. “I’ll give the federal government credit: they sure give us a ton of money,” Mr. Gatto said.

Though Leery of Washington, Alaska Feasts on Its Dollars
    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/1…

“I’ve introduced legislation to roll back the federal government,” he says. “They don’t have solutions; they just have taxes.”

And what of the federal stimulus, from which Alaska receives the most money per capita in the nation? Would he reject it?

Mr. Gatto, 72 and wiry, smiles and shakes his head: “I’ll give the federal government credit: they sure give us a ton of money. For every $1 we give them in taxes for highways, they give us back $5.76.”

Alaskans tend to live with their contradictions in these recessionary times. No place benefits more from federal largess than this state, where the Republican governor decries “intrusive” Obama administration policies, officials sue to overturn the health care legislation and Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, voted against the stimulus bill.

Although its unemployment rate sits at just 7.9 percent, about two percentage points below the national rate, Alaska has received $3,145 per capita in federal stimulus dollars as of May, the most in the nation, according to figures compiled by Pro Publica, an investigative Web site. Nevada, by contrast, has an unemployment rate north of 14 percent and has received $1,034 per capita in recovery aid. Florida’s jobless rate is 11.4 percent, and the state has obtained $914 per capita.

I have a general theory, and I haven't done alot of work to back it up, but I'll through it out there. But I have a hunch that there are certain similar evolutionary changes or steps that organized human societies go through on a measurable timescale. I would include organized religion as "societies" as groups of humans bonding together with common cause and belief and acting in concert

For example, if we compare Christianity to Islam. Christianity is roughly 2000 years old. Islam, as an organized religion started roughly in or around 630 AD. So you have a time lag of about 400 years give or take.

So, are there parallels between the development of these two religions? I propose their might be.

I mean, look at where Christianity was roughly in it's 14th century. It was the world's fastest growing religion, converting and presiding over vast swaths of the great unwashed of the time. It started to have inner conflicts over doctrine and history. And it turned outward, towards foreign enemies to consolidate factions at home in Europe.

The Crusades where a great way to a) relieve the pressure of having roving bands of hungry, poor single men looking for something to do and b) to consolidate and promote power at home (between different proto-nations and different takes on Christian doctrine - even within the Roman Church).

If I look at the role Jihad is serving in Islam now - well, Islam is the fastest growing religion on the planet, encompassing the poorest countries with huge populations of single, purposeless young men. There is tremendous upheaval in the religion itself - between Sunni and Shia factions, and between regional power centers (Tehran, Saudis...) and the West is a convenient sharpening stone to point these multitudes of blunt men at home and create a narrative of whose version of Islam is "superior" by how well they do in battle against the "Great Satan".

How is this any different from say the Knights Templar in the Middle Ages, or any other Christian Crusade group that gained power back in Europe by gaining victory - actual and moral, in the battlefields of the Near East?

So in a longer historical perspective, this is a growth stage of Islam. If we were enlightened we would understand this and not help fuel it by giving the extremists in Islam exactly what they want - a reason to hate us. By this hardheaded and stupid insistence on "muslin=terrorist" we just feed the rhetoric and recruitment of the factions of Islam that are seeking to consolidate their power at home. If we could be enlightened we would be able to blunt this and perhaps help speed along Islam to a more moderate course in the onrushing global civilization.

I know. Just a theory. And well, anyway, go back to arguing about mosques that aren't mosques being built nowhere near "ground zero" even though that's all you hear.

    Guys,
It has been a while since I have posted here. PonyBoy and I have been friends for years. I'm pretty sure we will be friends for a long time. I was born a muslim but I don't believe in that religious nonsense. I'm an atheist and firm believer in it. If you think he is a racist, well you should hear our conversations. Not all repubs are racists, hell I think a lot of dems who claim they are accepting to other races tend to be more racist. Actually pretty much everyone in the world is a little racist inside.

I honestly do not understand why you folks sit here and argue about nonsense that doesn't matter. I guess everyone grows a set of testicals online, so passing judgement is much easier here.

    • You guys are not going to solve religious issues ever. It's a fact. Live with it.cosmo
    • I don't think Ponyboy is a racist at all. I disagree with him from time to time, but I think he's reasonable fellow.TheBlueOne
    • woah... :)
thanks, Ad... and thanks TBO - I've always respected you, man.
      PonyBoy
    • It seems like everyone is being judged by their political affiliation these days. You guys need to stop doing this to yourself.cosmo
    • ...yourself. Trust me being repub or dem doesn't really solve shit. They are both shit.cosmo
    • TBO - I read a few comments earlier which sounded a lot like people think he is a racist.cosmo
    • Who called him a racist?DrBombay
  • TheBlueOne0

We're not discussing religion per se, nor trying to resolve religious issues. We are discussing how religious issues are used as a pretext in the political sphere.

    Rather a different animal.

Did someone call Ponyboy a racist and it got deleted? Cause I didn't see that.

cosmo, you are right though it is a stupid issue. I wish the media would stop talking about it, because it only encourages hatred and bigotry.

    • Now back to more important issues, like the demise of American Apparel..ukit

even though i don't see eye to eye with pony on most issues, i'd never put him in the same category as a jazx. dunno where that came from.
