The U.S. Navy has equipment and deep ocean experience like no other country. They've stopped NUCLEAR spills and recovered even enemy submarines from the deepest ocean floor... ... something tells me they have the resources (engineers etc) to put a stop to this spill.
- but i am speculating based on the Navy's past actions - i can admit thatPonyBoy
- PonyBoy0
Never mind... ... I just found the actual solution - no more need to argue.
"Should extraterrestrials stop the Gulf Leak? - 10,000 sign petition for ETs to show up"

Hey I was kidding...but your complaints are pretty ridiculous
You're really telling me Obama met with military leaders and told them NOT to fix the oil spill?
- I believe Obama approaches things thinking of his politics and party first... as he's shown us w/the AZ 1070 bill etcPonyBoy
- (as do republicans... thus my last post on the previous page)PonyBoy
- Even if that was true how does politics make not stopping the spill a good idea?ukit
- to further the push for 'green technology' that doesn't exist yetPonyBoy
- (of which I'm all for, btw)PonyBoy

I have to agree with PonyBoy that the navy should have a much larger role in this. Not so much to stop the leak since there really isn't much of a solution at this point, but to organize cleanup efforts and to mitigate further damage. BP has clearly shown that it is more interested in saving its public image than containing and cleaning regardless of the political implications.
Why I think the Navy isn't involved? Because it's overextended in multiple fronts and we just don't have the navy man power to work on cleanup efforts. I might add that I'm aware that I could be mistaken.
- ukit0
Eh...I call BS on that for the following reason - the spill has been BAD for Obama politically. Not horrible like Katrina was for Bush but his approval ratings has slipped a couple points and it makes it harder for him to concentrate on the bills he wanted to pass this summer.
Also if it was really possible for the Navy to fix the spill don't you think someone at the top levels of the military would have said so? They weren't shy about speaking out when Obama was thinking about not sending more troops to Afghanistan.

About the submarine thing:
There are manned submarines that have visited the Titanic, which is at 12,000 feet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIR…)
The Mir submarine has been used to visit and film the Titanic. I read a pretty awesome article recently about the people who have been down there. That's why James Cameron was offering help because he co-owns these or something like that.- woah... that's right!! there's a lot of technology out there that has been ignored during this spillPonyBoy

Jesu H. Christ WTF is wrong with you people. The Navy is the best designed fighting force for killing and blowing up shit on the open ocean. We have spent cock all amounts of money to ensure that we have killing technology bar none. Please tell me at what point in history the Navy focused huge amounts of dollars and research at plugging oil leaks on the bottom of the ocean.
I mean somewhere other than an internet link with lots of capitalized paragraphs and youtube links.
WTF is up with you conservatives that for every fucking problem you throw either the military or some cock-eyed utopian idea of the Free Market™ at and think that fixes it? Shit, why don't we just throw Haliburton at it and...
Oh wait. Yeah, they were involved weren't they.

If you think challenging the AZ law is some crazy idea, you should read these:
http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2010/04…
It sounded to the Law Blog like we were heading toward a big federalism showdown. So we turned to Karl Manheim of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and Erwin Chemerinsky of UC Irvine Law to pregame it for us. Their response: the law is DOA.
The Arizona law appears to be “facially unconstitutional,” Manheim said. “States have no power to pass immigration laws because it’s an attribute of foreign affairs. Just as states can’t have their own foreign policies or enter into treaties, they can’t have their own immigration laws either.”
States have long attempted to regulate immigration and in some instances the federal government successfully challenged state laws in court, including in the 1800s, Manheim said.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/2…
Can Arizona’s controversial new immigration law — allowing the police to stop people and demand proof of citizenship — pass constitutional muster?
To many scholars, the answer is, simply, no.
“The law is clearly pre-empted by federal law under Supreme Court precedents,” said Erwin Chemerinsky, an expert in constitutional law and the dean of the University of California, Irvine, School of Law.
Since the 1800s, the federal government has been in charge of controlling immigration and enforcing those laws, Professor Chemerinsky noted. And that is why, he argued, Arizona’s effort to enforce its own laws is destined to fail.
But even some experts who say they are troubled by the law said it might survive challenges.
“My view of the constitutional question is that it is unconstitutional,” said Hiroshi Motomura, co-author of leading casebooks on immigration law and a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law. “But it’s a far cry from predicting empirically what a judge who actually gets this case will do.”
...So there you got the NYT and the WSJ, two of the most respected papers in the country, one considered center-left, the other center-right, but they both agree that even the most charitable interpretation is that the law is questionable. Given that, why would you be surprised for a second that the government plans to challenge it?
Do they see a political upside in terms of rallying Hispanics? Sure. Just like Republicans saw an upside in terms of rallying...well, you know. But that doesn't change the facts of the law. In fact, it's funny the Republicans are so dogmatic about say, the Civil Rights Act, but not about this.

".. and all you see in the Navy is a big killing machine?"
-PonyBoyWTF do you think they're for? And the Army, Marines? Fuck, I'm a proud American that we have the best ass-kicking killing machine on the planet to back our shit up. My family has proudly served for five generations, thank you.
You're the hippy here thinking the military is designed for something other than Killing The Other Mother Fucker With The Ball.
Sure, the US military forces do a bit of crappy nation building here, filling in some sandbags there in a flood, etc. But are you seriously suggesting there is some inherent expertise in the military in deepsea oil exploration fuckups?
Jesus, get in touch with reality and call me back.
And yeah....ohhh..I name dropped Haliburton because they were a subcontractor on the project. That's not seeing a boogey man that's...*cough* reality.
Wake up and smell it.
- I guess your family failed to inform you that the Navy puts forth large humanitarian efforts and have for yearsPonyBoy
- Please point to specialization in deep sea oil disasters please.TheBlueOne

The Seabees, construction battalion for the Navy(CBs) have played a critical role in several disaster recoveries.
The Seabees supported disaster recovery efforts for victims of the Malibu firestorms and Northridge earthquake.
In 1992, they were called on to provide recovery assistance to the hurricane devastated area of Homestead, Florida, following Hurricane Andrew.
Seabees were also vital to the humanitarian efforts in Somalia during Operation Restore Hope in 1992-1993.
In 1994, they were again called on to provide assistance to the Haitian Relief effort at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
On Christmas Day 1995, Seabees arrived in Croatia to support the Army by building camps as part of Operation Joint Endeavor, the peacekeeping effort in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Seabees deployed to Pensacola, Florida in September of 2004 in response to Hurricane Ivan’s destruction to the Naval Air Station.
The Naval Construction Training Center in Gulfport suffered much damage in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Seabee units most recently have been deployed to provide construction support in Haiti after their devastating earthquake in 2010.

It's their organizational and engineering abilities that I would like see used in this disaster.
- Again, I see no specialization in deep sea oil disasters. Nice try though with dazzling us with a list.TheBlueOne

Last I checked there is a fucking Admiral overseeing the US Government response.
I guess you guys are talking about the Navy that somehow isn't involved in this process and their super secret US taxpayer funded Magic Oil Fixit Sub Machines.
- I correct myself. He's a US Coast Guard Amdmiral.TheBlueOne
- Isn't that sort of the Coast Guard's role though...protecting the Coast?ukit
- ukit0
You guys will be thrilled to know that Obama deployed the Navy's organizational and engineering abilities to the oil spill back in April.
As detailed on...the Navy's website:
http://www.navy.mil/search/displ…
Also, interesting quote from the Pentagon:
"Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said the military is assessing how it might help and what resources could be deployed. He did not say how long that might take.
“There is a full-blown effort within this department to try to find the kinds of things that could be helpful,” Morrell said.
He said the federal response is far wider than the Pentagon and should involve a close partnership with the energy industry. For example, he said, industrial research on submersible vehicles that can operate at great depth outpaces the military’s."
Let me know the next complaint you can think up.
- ukit0
haha...I love the top rated comment on this
"Say what you will about this man, but if Bush wasn't the president, and he just stuck to doing coke and mismanaging baseball teams, he'd be the coolest guy ever."
