You have to go pretty far to try to pretend a liberal policy approach is what went wrong here, what went wrong is a libertarian mentality that says, let's leave the oil companies to their own devices, let them drill where they want and write their own safety regulations. Does Obama deserve some blame? Sure, but only to the extent that he failed to change that approach which had become the norm.
Want more disasters like this? Then by all means elect more Republicans in November.

Long term solution: serious investment in alternative energy, like we did back in the 60s when Kennedy decided he wanted to go to the Moon and achieved it in 10 years. Even if you don't believe in global warming, there's no question that we are running out of places to drill for oil - with more and more need to exploit difficult approaches like deep sea offshore drilling, and inevitably, you just get more huge disasters like this.
Guess who's blocking any kind of alternative energy bill? The Republican party along with a handful of conservative/corporate Democrats from states that depend heavily on coal and oil. If you had just three or four less conservatives in the Senate, we'd already be on our way.

Where's the onshore drilling zenmasterfoo? They already drill in Alaska. Are you really saying being able to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is going to net us that much oil? I'm just asking because according to most people the worldwide supply is dwindling rapidly...that's why you see so much interest in offshore drilling. It's really not because of the EPA, that's just a bullshit line Palin and her friends in the industry are feeding you.
Also I think people focus too much on drilling "here" vs in Saudi Arabia or whatever. It's not like we get to keep all the oil when BP drills in the Gulf - it just goes on the international market like oil drilled everywhere else, right?

The total proven reserves, if we open up the Arctic Wildlife Refuge and everything else? 21 billion barrels.

So if oil companies got their way and could drill EVERYWHERE within the continental U.S., you'd have enough oil to power the country for three years.
